I think this 'GFWL = No sale' idea is a bit overboard given MP is a sidecar aspect of the DS experience.

I think the big problem is that the MP was so closely integrated into the SP. So most people didn't even know they had to do crap like port forwarding or enabling UPnP.

In some cases GfWL would just ignore UPnP and would require some obtuse tinkering with network setting to get it working as intended.

I think the online aspect (not necessarily MP though) is integral part of the Souls-experience. Offline it it's still an excellent game, but without online functionality I feel there is something just missing.

That is one thing I don't hold against GfWL. LOTS of software will randomly ignore UPnP.

I love UPnP, but the first thing I do when I have ANY problem is look up what the ports I need to forward are and do it manually.

Having talked to people about GFWL though, it seems that From's netcode is where the problem lies more than GFWL necessarily. GFWL sees you, it's just in the game where things break down.

Yes and no.

Yes: UPnP allows software to bypass and control your (hardware) firewall. That is a BIG security no-no

No: You still need to have installed that software. So it boils down to a case where if you install a virus, it can pick what ports it phones home with. And that is really it.


The security specialist peoples I know (so all two of them :p) and most of the people I talk to at conferences (considerably more) agree: If you are a business, disable that garbage. If you are at home, it is one of the greatest things ever invented for gamers and pirates.
