    Play Dune 2 - in a browser

For those that have not seen it.

    http://play-dune.com/

    Dune 2 in your browser!

Be prepared to be frustrated with ancient RTS controls. (No A-move, no right click commands)

Have such fond memories of playing this on the old 33Mhz IBM.

I tried it and it was as annoying as hell. The concrete was the primary annoyance. Why can't I just build a base foundation all at once? The timer for the single pads was too short to go do something else but too long to just keep clicking over and over without getting bored.

I liked the game play other wise but the UI and queuing type stuff made me cry.

Yeah, it's bit too Foundation Laying Simulator 1992 for my tastes. And way over the hill in most other respects. I don't think I was gaming on computers in any serious capacity until a few years after Dune 2, so I don't have the nostalgia I imagine is necessary to play more than a few minutes of this. I played some of Syndicate recently, and it hasn't aged particularly well either, but it's hard to believe it was released just a year after this. The holdup for me with a lot of old games isn't graphics, it's funky-ass controls. Oh, how I tried to play System Shock.

I'll never replay Dune 2 and happily leave it as a (mostly) happy experience from my childhood. As mentioned, certain types of games will not age well due to UI considerations at the time - it's like trying to play some of the Ultima games these days.

If you want a Dune strategy experience then go look for a copy of Emperor: Battle For Dune. It's a hell of a fun game and very true to the spirit of the first, but now with added Westwood cheesy FMV sequences.

I gave it a go, but it really feels so archaic now. Even the Original Command & Conquer is far more playable than that, might give Dune 2000 a go though seeing as it's a remake (partially).

I actually went back and played Dune 1 all over again, really enjoyed it.
Tried to continue to Dune 2 as well, but like stated before me, it was hard....
I'm guessing I had a lot more patience and free time as a child, luxuries I don't have anymore :/

There's improved concrete (2x2) once you upgrade Construction Yard. The real frustration in this game is trying to command groups of units (one by one!!). In other words, an ideal game for Koreans.

As for C&C, you can legally download C&C with high res patch, music and stuff.

I believe someone made a hack for SS which actually lets you rebind keys so that you don't have to break your finger every time you want to go backwards.

And mouselook. It holds up quite well.

There's always Dune 2000. Practically 0 new ideas, even music is very similar. It has two added units: artillery and rocket launcher, that's it. Ideal for people who consider Dune 2 perfect and just want a remake.

It wasn't so much just that as it was all this:

    S [KP8] [UP] -- Move Forward
    X [KP2] [DOWN] -- Move Backward
    Z [KP1] -- Move Left
    C [KP3] -- Move Right
    [SHIFT] -- Run
    [SPACE] -- Jump

    A [KP4] [LEFT] -- Yaw Left
    D [KP6] [RGHT] -- Yaw Right
[KP7] -- Yaw Left While Running Forward
[KP9] -- Yaw Right While Running Forward

    Q -- Lean Left
    W -- Cancel Lean
    E -- Lean Right

    R -- Pitch Up
    F -- Center View
    V -- Pitch Down

    T -- Stand
    G -- Crouch
    B -- Prone
I might look into how well the mouselook mod functions at some point. I feel like I'm doing a disservice to my soul by not playing.

Lot of moaning on this thread. I'm going to hack all your RPGs and remove the maps and journals so you have to get some paper and do it old school.

That's fine, I prefer my RPGs like my MMORPGs, no in game maps and no stupid quest arrows. My family has some world class orienteerers and while I dislike running through thorns and thick woods in the freezing cold I loved the mapping and exploring aspect.

Not sure what this has to do with archaic controls and crude (if influential) game design.
