That expansion thang - Hurt of Thongs
Since it's official now that there's an expansion coming I figured one could cumulate all available info in one spot. So that's here. Feel free to share all HoT things in here (concerning RL material, I'll be the final judge of the overall HoTness), be it official info, feelings of hype/angst/rage/confusion/etc., or miscellaneous thoughts.
Most likely, I won't get the expansion myself, since I'm quite convinced that I won't enjoy any more of the stuff that Anet has churned out during the past year with the Living Story chapters. Back when the GW1 expansions came out I bought them in a heartbeat because I loved the base game and knew that there was more of just that waiting for me. Can't say the same for GW2 anymore. But I'll keep eyes and ears open in case their attitude and strategy regarding content should magically make a turn for the better.Forum janitor in training.

So I was thinking about this one specialisation per class thing and I'm not sure I understand it completely. They say it changes the way you play the class, does that mean every weapon will have new abilities? Or is it like an upgrade, you'll get a new weapon and some additional skills?
Basically what I'm asking is, is there a downside for specialising? Can you lose some of your old skills? It might be a bit too early for this question but I'm asking anyway, for some discussion.

From what I understood, the only thing you could consider a loss is that your class-specific mechanic changes. Otherwise it's just a new weapon and new skills.

So, thoughts on new weapons/ specialisations.
Im assuming no spears from reading reports of after pax party comments.
we know ranger (Druid) staff and necro (?) GS.
Warrior already has all the martial weapons, so you're left with staff/scepter/focus which I can't see really, or shortbow, a possibility for a more ranged condition weapon? More likely I think is dagger or pistol for some scoundrel archetype .
Guard has really crap ranged options, so a bow would flesh them out a bit.
Thief. Offhand sword would be great,shield for a more defensive spec? Or mace for a mugging thug sort?
Ele. Got to be either sword or GS. Battlemage! I think 2h is unlikely (would need 20 new skills) so I'm hoping sword.
Engi. Did we see hammer in the vid? A melee option like this makes sense.
Mes. Shield maybe? Or dagger.
I'd like to see the less used weapons (mace, hammer, shield, axe, bows, pistol) get more love over the swords, staves and GS that are used by half the classes already.

I have hopes this expansion will be the romantic comedy plot point that will liven the boring and broken marriage between GW2 and I. We've fallen into the daily routine trap...

there's a mes with a shield in the trailer and we think it was an engi with a hammer. Guardian should get a rifle a la western preachers, I like the idea of mace on the thief too.
disappointed that they haven't announced spear/polearm type thing; but maybe they will.

I think Colin confirmed in the post-show party that there won't be polearms (or aboveground spears?), as Xanadu alluded to above.

I imagine elementalist will likely end up with some kind of 'warrior' specialisation, most likely a new melee weapon. But I would jump out of my chair if they gave us elemental archers!

I`m just hoping that Necro might become interesting again. The reason why I stopped playing is that it`s just so indescribably boring to be a Necro, by far the dullest class to play. Other things are hoping for are more options for ranged Warriors and a way to share map data (or at least waypoints) between characters. Every time I consider making a new character I just remember that I have to explore the whole map again and that makes me sad.

Apparently someone saw an OH pistol on the war, and there's noise about rifle thieves, but the only confirmed things are staff ranger, shield mesmer with time powers, and hammer engi.

The way I've understood specialisation, it's not meant to be an upgrade so to speak, it's just something different. What if it changes your play style completely and it's not why you chose that class in the first place? Has anyone considered not specialising at all? Our rangers at the moment. Do you want to become a druid?
