What's new compared to the original game?

The UI is new, it works on tablets, seems much faster both on PC and on phone. Mechanics wise, I didn't want to know so I'll let you know as I play it :)

Ok, been playing a few days and what I've noticed so far:
Hyperspace research only increases range, not speed.
Far more types of technology (7 instead of 4), and research seems significantly slower than the original.
Seems to be no formal alliances (whether by oversight or design choice, I'm not sure).
New (I think?) turn based mode which allows people with real lives to play the game and only requires two logins a day to stay competitive.

The slowing down in general seems good, albeit occasionally frustrating.

Slowing down is good in my book, too. I wish there were more randomness, so that fighting against the odds would be more feasible.

The slow down makes fighting against the odds much easier, due to long supply lines and slowness of movement.
