Iain Banks terminally ill with cancer
I just heard about this on the BBC, this is very sad and shocking news. A great writer, and from what little I know of him from radio and TV, he seems like a very decent man.
From http://www.iain-banks.net/ today
The bottom line, now, I'm afraid, is that as a late stage gall bladder cancer patient, I'm expected to live for 'several months' and it’s extremely unlikely I'll live beyond a year. So it looks like my latest novel, The Quarry, will be my last.

My father got brain cancer and passed away after year of struggle with it..Fuck the cancer.... I take the lives of a few to protect the lives of many. I commit acts of war to preserve the greater peace. I take no joy in killing, but make no mistake; I'll do what needs to be done. Because it's my job. It's my duty. My name is Sam Fisher, and I am a Splinter Cell.
