In no particular order other than the order I thought them up in:

    Planetside 2
    Tribes 2
    Quake 3 Arena
    Unreal Tournament (1999)
    Deus Ex: HR
    Team Fortress 2
    Battlefield Bad Company 2
    Half Life 2
    Left4Dead
    Tribes: Ascend

    Honorable mention:
Section 8: Prejudice. Pity the game never took off, because I really did like the shooting in it.

I prefer AVP2. It's just a better designed game all around. It's really one of those sequels where everything is better.

I replayed AVP and realized much to my disappointment that everything awesome I remembered about it was actually from AVP 2.

Adding to my list according to Lamb's guidelines.

    Old list:
    Call of Duty 1
    Doom
    Mirror's Edge
    Stalker

    New additions:
    Operation Flashpoint
    System Shock 2
    Portal
    Battlefield 1942
    Unreal Tournament 2003
    Painkiller

In the Jedi Knight series I'm only playing for the third-person lightsaber which was fresh at the time, and more importantly, acted like a fucking lightsaber. Aside from some interesting AI, F.E.A.R is really overrated, and Deus Ex can go take a hike too. I appreciate what Deus Ex did and acknowledge that it earned it's place in history, but personally I can't stand it.

    Unreal Tournament
Half-Life 2 (sorry, HL1, but, you know... Xen)
    Deus Ex: Human Revolution
    Serious Sam

    - If the sound of Samuel Barber's "Adagio For Strings" makes you think of Kharak burning instead of the Vietnamese jungle, most of your youth happened during the 90s. -

I was really surprised by how good the marine campaign was in AVP 2. The story was trash, but it made you feel scared and vulnerable in parts, especially the beginning. I wish they had made predators more scary though.

I always have such a hard time remembering games to put on these lists. Well, here it goes in no particular order:

    Red Orchestra: Ostfront 1941-1945
Darkest Hour 44-45 (Red Orchestra mod)
    Arma 2
    Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Call of Duty (the first one)
    Mirror's Edge
    Battlefield 1942
    Metro 2033
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Portal

I agree very much, the marine campaigns where ridiculously tense and I have to admit that I was scared shitless of predators in both AvP 1 and 2. Like, the marine campaing in these games is the only instance where I periodically had to get away from my computer because of the atmosphere and go do something else just to compose myself. I really hope that Colonial Marines (which is coming out very soon!) even brushes on that feeling of helplessness, but I have a feeling that it won't.

But I always prefered the Alien campaigns in these games tbh as it kind of was the best of both (marine and predator) worlds. You where vulnerable but also powerful, and zipping along walls and ceilings then pouncing on your pray out of the shadows and eating their brains is one of the joys that very few games can match even today.

    10 (in random order):
    MoH: Allied Assault
    System Shock 2
    Half-Life 2 (I like 2 more than 1)
    Unreal (not Tournament!)
    Alien vs Predator 2
Far Cry 3 (I LOVE it)
    F.E.A.R
    Stalker: CoP
Zeno Clash (if Portal counts then ZC too)
    Call od Duty (first one)

    Others:
The Void/Turgor/Tension (really weird and atmospheric stuff)
Metro 2033 (or some other numbers, I can't remember it)
    Soldier of Fortune
Call of Duty (I like them. All.)
    Half Life
    Stalker (see CoD)
    Serious Sam
    Painkiller
No One Lives Forever (it should be in top 10 I think, but I didn't really play it except for 2-3 missions, only recently I saw some footage on YT - it's really awesome)
    Postal 2
    Portal 1 & 2
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Bioshock
    Return to Castle Wolfenstein

    Bonus - console shooters:
Medal Of Honor (PSX ones, brilliant stuff)
    Black (awesome)

In no order, other than that with which they appear on the page.
Here's ten that I enjoyed above ALL others.

    SiN
    Q3A
    NOLF2
UT (one of the 2k ones or even the original at a pinch)
    Painkiller
    Borderlands (both)
    MOH Allied Assault
Red Faction 1 (the SP was a bit plain but the MP was fun)
    System Shock 2
Battlefield 3 (tough call if I had to pick one, 1942 was a great era but the game was a little clunky)

I forgot to add Star Trek Elite Force 1 and 2... Goddamn I miss good SP FPS games that are not modern military wankery... They seem so rare these days.

I was struck by how few games on my list are recent. Part of that is me needing to try Rage, Bulletstorm, and Dishonored, but another part is that most single-player shooters seem to be third-person these days.

I think the idea of asymmetric play is gaining more ground, and that was one of the things that made the game so special. Aliens played very differently with marines. I think a problem with the predators/predator campaigns was that they played like an FPS character. Imagine a game where predators climb like Assassin's Creed / have very powerful weapons with high reload time / stealth, Aliens play much the same, and Humans play as an FPS. Suddenly that jungle or city would start looking very, very different. You could even vary it by objective, aliens have to protect the hive, predators have to kill as many as possible, and humans have to blow up the hive and the predator ship.

Who knows if the game will live up to that potential though.

Hmm The Void. I could never get far into it, was always struck by the intense feeling that I was doing it wrong.

Although it has reminded me of Pathologic which is the ultimate of honourable mentions in that I can't say how anyone would put it in their top 10 but deserves praise thrown its way for trying to be different. Again another game which I just didn't get far enough into (partially due to translation issues, partially due to me messing up and running out of either resources or reputation, depending on the character I start with.
