The MadCat’s iconic frame emerges from the fog of war, its egg-shaped cockpit perched atop raptor legs, shouldering twin blocks of long-range missile racks. I’ve got to make a call: do I sprint to the extraction point and attempt to complete the mission without a fight? Do I use the nuclear option and zap the rows of gas tanks near the MadCat for a sure kill—but with no chance of salvaging it? Or do I fight it head-on, and maybe—if I range correctly, kite it away from my damaged scout mech, and find enough finesse—knock the beast down without killing it, adding it to my squad and taking it into mission four as a playable prize?

It's been free for a while, but thanks for bringing it to the attention of everyone. This game is a real gem and I've spent many many hours playing and replaying it.

I hear it's bastard hard to get it working on a 64bit system though.

also: My favorite mechs are Raven, Shadowcat and Catapult in that order.

also2: The second one isn't as good but still a lot of fun. We used to make and play custom missions with it. Those were the days.

also3: Here's the link to download Mech Commander 2 free: http://www.shacknews.com/file/20899/...er-2-free-game

Oh yeah, I know. But it's really rewarding when you do it right. I could talk about this game for hours and hours. It really has a great soundtrack too, very epic.

I should download it just for that and put the music in a playlist.

Here's great Nanosuitninja playing Mech Commander:

Really great games and I have known it has been "free' for a few years now. Anyone know if this is actually legal free or just abandonware free?

I think it's legal but I don't really care because these were among the few games I've legally bought in my youth. And I refuse to believe just because my CDs died I don't own the game anymore.

It was actually released for free by Microsoft if i understood correct.

    From PCGAMER article:

MechCommander was my X-COM; it meaningfully splits your role as a player—you had to be an engineer and a tactican—oscillating between management and combat, returning to missions that you couldn’t beat with creative loadouts. Atop all this, it’s available for free after being released by Microsoft (the source code for the less-charming MechCommander 2 is available for grabs directly from Microsoft, too). Even at 640×480 resolution, the steady accumulation of robot parts makes it worth returning to.

I just realized I still remember the voices of all the Mechwarriors. I'm such a fanboy.

Yeah. If memory serves, the second was less warmly received, but I still love both of them. In fact, I kind of prefer 2.

Although, it definitely suffered from the same problem Homeworld did (and OpFor: Resistance to a much lesser case): Because resources are recorded between missions, you have a lot of downtime spent just cleaning up and collecting crap.

Hmmm.... Really in the mood for MC2 now :p

I posted the link to free download of the second game above, can you add it to the main post for posterity, DaftPunk?

Is that a reengineered version of Mechcommander 2 or the same one that Microsoft have on their site?

The Microsoft one is less all the videos and the game loses a lot of its charm plus it has a lot of issues with graphics etc etc

Downloading now. Had both of these games, and would still do if it was not as popular with my bro. Ah, to relive memories. :P

Oh and in regards to MC1 if you open the PREFS.cfg file and set the resolution to '3' you can play the game at a higher res.

It doesn't do widescreen though as far as I'm aware.

After that though don't go into your options screen, or it will reset upon rebooting the game.

    I don't have the "Resolution" line :|

You need to add it before FITend line

    l Resolution=3

The menus stay low res and get stuck in a corner for me but the gameplay works in high-res.

    This is my file

    [MechCommander]
    b PaletteCycle=TRUE
    b DirectDraw=TRUE
    b Use90Pixel=TRUE
    b Force45Pixel=FALSE
    b Force16Mb=FALSE
    b Force32Mb=FALSE
    l Difficulty=1
    l Brightness=1
    l MusicVolume=61
    l RadioVolume=79
    l SFXVolume=97
    l Resolution=3
    FITend

The 32 meg things may have been fudging it, the game only released with 16 bit colour version.

There was a 32 Bit version but it would've been released on too many cds and required a lot more than the average memory around that time.

    Crikey.

Did I really play games on a machine with just 16 megs of Ram?

I had no idea this existed, but it looks like a dream game for me. I've wanted a squad level strategy game with mechs for so long, and never found anything. I dunno how I missed this. Thanks for the link, downloading now. I hope it works fine on windows 7 64-bit.
