Nvidia Titan: is that an Apple LISA?

So the new video card from Nvidia is out:
    http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/19/n...itan-announce/

The Titan is a recycled workstation card with disabled shader clusters.
    Costs $1000.
    Can't outperform a gtx690 or gtx680 sli.
The "killer app" for the card is Crysis 3, a linear console port (more or less).

You know, I'm crazy enough to spend $1000 on a piece of hardware if I'm hyped enough about it. This is not one of those times.

How many of these kind of things to they actually sell? Not this specific one, but their newest silly money card that's not actually nearly worth the money.

Its the flagship model. It will sell to "enthusiasts", but mostly it just serves as a way to announce the next "generation" that will come out over the course of a year. It also may appeal more toward researchers, but I haven't checked the specs in enough detail to officially say anything on that front.

And by naming it "Titan" it will appeal to people who understand HPC and already have a hard-on for the real Titan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_(supercomputer)

This card is not built on a new architecture, it's built on defective Tesla cards that nvidia couldn't sell in the CAD and science markets. This is basically leftovers for $1k...

The next few years will be an interesting time for nvidia.

Back when dx10 graphics cards were just about to launch, PC enthusiasts (myself included) were super hyped about the possibility of FINALLY getting exclusives or ports that were truly next-gen.
We got Crysis and .... that was it.

On the one hand i was glad that a lot of game developers favoured compatibility over the cutting edge, which meant that the PC gaming crowd can include more people. Not to mention extending the life of gamer PCs to more than 6 months!
    but...
not having really immersive simulations or impressive artwork possible only on cutting edge hardware means there really isn't any point in investing a thousand bucks with the hope that some game developer will decide to release a cutting edge game only 10,000 people can play. John Carmack and Tim Sweeney (of Epic games) used to fill that void, but not anymore. Even Crytek has given up.

10k for now. It's using left-over GPUs and feeding a very small market of people with too much money.

On the other hand, people who can buy the Titan are also people who could buy the GTX 690, or a pair of 680s, 670s, or Radeon HD 7970s. The performance this card serves up is not unprecedented (unless we get some big surprises on Thursday), except if you get into using three or four of them in SLI.

bad optimization. game fault not the card. it is possible you will never get 60 fps with that game maxed and with high resolution, no matter how much power you throw at it.

CPU limited games (which Metro 2033 often is) are not gonna see much improvement from a $1k card.

I'd probably go with Cooper's explanation more than Lukasz, but to be fair there are plenty of games out there which still run like absolute dogs even with advanced hardware this far down the line. ARMA: Cold War Assault (formerly Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis) is the same - push the graphics too far and it'll crawl to a halt, just as if you put too many objects or AI in a map (which is CPU-limited).

Nvidia should start supervising NFL or world football championships. They would stack teams with more handsome guys, thus making the game better. Next they will make sure all athletes have boobs.

So big deal has been made of a card that is 30% faster than the next one. Bad publicity for Cray and supercomputers in general.

30% increase is a pretty big deal in terms of single card performance, though? It's not like anyone ever expected this to be good value for money, it's a top end card for the people who absolutely must have the fastest PC.
