I played some 10-20 games with the not-yet-finished 2xAC20 build, not having much of a success so far but it's fun nonetheless.
So far i don't miss not having lasers on it, since i've only ran out of ammo once (starting with 42 shells). I usually get killed somewhere 2/3 in my ammo stock. Obviously i lack armour badly, which sucks a lot for a brawler.
The other issue is heat - it doesn't build up as fast a laser-boat would, but it also takes ages to cool off, meaning that if i shoot about 5 times in a row i gotta run and hide for some time or risk shutting down in the middle of it all. I've switched to chain-fire which helps a little bit (also nice for adjusting aim quickly) but still it's a problem.

The worst part is the XL engine - it costs about as much as the whole mech, so it will be quite some time before i can afford one, unlocking the oh-so-needed weight for MOAR ARMOUR...

Still, nice mech, nice build, it's fun to play and i love seeing how the enemies get mighty pushed/turned when i hit them in the arms/side torso.
Oh and, Atlases are still uber-hard to kill, even with that kinda firepower.

    Hello!

Fairly new to MWO and have been finding medium Mechs to be my favourites so far (like the combination of firepower and agility). My current Trebuchet variant is:
    http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=6...13f05515157cc0
Any suggestions how to make it more efficient? Faster? Better? Stronger?
I've been pondering for quite some time about the XL engine, but in the test games I played the extra armor I can equip made up for the increased risk of critical hits. Usually I stay at distance, sniping with the ER PPC, hiding cowardly behind larger Mechs, using the upgraded speed to switch positions once lumbering giants close in on me. The Streak SRM come into play when fast scout mechs come close and I'm still fast enough to capture some points.

I see nothing fundamentally wrong with your build, as long as you're comfortable with it :)
The only suggestion I'd make is to try and gauge how useful the AMS is for you, I don't think you would have much trouble simply dodging missiles with a good use of cover. I would probably swap it and the ammo for an extra heat sink (you cant go wrong with more heat sinks when it comes to PPCs) or a slightly bigger engine.
Then again I'm more a crazy brawler myself (if my mech has all his arms and side torsos at the end of a round I've been doing something wrong) so I'm not exactly the best critic when it comes to sniper and XL engine builds.

    Here's how I'd tweak it:

    http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=6...81910b3ddfb607

Dropped the AMS and half a ton of armour from the empty arm and put in two machine guns.

AMS won't see much use anyway, as was just said you're fast enough to reach cover, and LRM users aren't particularly common right now. And since you're committed to using ERPPCs over regular PPCs you're going to run hot, no way around that, but MGs let you constantly put out some damage with no heat use.

Edit:LRMs just got a damage buff and netcode buff, probably stick with AMS.

Anyone want to give an opinion on my CTF-4X wielding 3 AC/2s and an Ultra AC/5 (also left the stock lrm5 to the head)?

    http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=4...c61e43aca546e3

Someone mentioned that the Ferro-Fibrous ain't that great, so kind of considering ditching the lrm's, dropping even another heatsink or 2 (or AMS and its ammo) and changing to basic armor and buying a 2nd UAC/5 so both hands would got 1 coupled with AC/2.

I barely use ballistics so once again take my advice with a grain of salt and I can't exactly comment on the weapons themselves, but I'll just say this: you want double heat sinks, and maybe a bigger engine and max armor though that depends on what you want to do with your mech. You will have both much better cooling without even needing actual heatsinks (the ones in the engine will do the job) and more mobility.
I tinkered that very quickly (I'm at work so can't exactly think about it much more) http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=4...b246efd20def29 to show you the idea. You could probably settle for a 225 if you want to fit a few more things in there. The LRM5s are a bit pointless but you could use a Streak SRM2, for example.

My more general advice on your build: it might be just me but it feels very unfocused, it's not obvious what you are trying to achieve with it. Pick a role and work your build around it accordingly.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll give the MG-variant a spin (have some MG lying around somewhere) and see if I'm missing the AMS. Only ran out of SRM ammo one time so far, so don't think I'll need extra ammo for that right now. Some extra firepower at close range seems to be just the right thing for better dealing with those pesky scout Mechs. But I don't have particular problems with scouts anyway, managed to shoot down 3 in a row in a match yesterday. Streak SRM are wonderful. And against larger enemies I run away ;)

@Graerth: since you have a standard engine, perhaps consider CASE for the torso sides? You have an awful lot of ammo there. I personally don't like the U/AC 5 since they're jamming all the time and would bundle AC/5 with AC/2 in each arm, drop the lrm 5 and put 2 med lasers in the torso for good measure. Go for double heatsinks in any case, saves you some tons.

Standard heatsinks is never good, pay for doubles as soon as you can afford them. Also ammo in the side torsos in very rarely necessary, so I'd move all that to the legs, head and arms. Then I'd swap the lrm5 for 2ml, it's a much better backup weapon but you will need double heatsinks for it. I hate going that slow too. With all that in mind, this is a good template to start from:

Then throw whatever weapons you want in to it. My recommendations:

    Some tried and tested builds:

    Raven 3L MPL + Streak + TAG
    http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=3...59fc9385a0049c
(note: you can fit a XL280 for the same weight, I just happen to have a spare 275 lying around)
Role: accompany other mechs with ECM bubble, support heavier mechs by standing behind them and covering their flanks. Do not attempt to be a Jenner - this mech is not a Jenner.

Heavy Metal Gauss + LL + Streak
    http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=6...f2ada844482a9f
(Note: the TAG can be removed if you aren't dropping with allied LRM boats)
Role: use terrain to hide from higher damage mechs, pop in and out of cover to snipe safely, use jump jets to use terrain to your advantage. You are not an Atlas, do not try to be an Atlas. Mixed success with this one, the HM is a tricky beast.

edit: wow I tried out my HM for the first time since the Gauss change and it really sucks bad, don't recommend running anything with a Gauss for the moment. Running this build instead:
    http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=6...f80f788fd25215
edit: yeah I just ran this build and first match went 1k dmg, it's not bad

    Firebrand AC5 + LL
    http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=81&l=9037b270f2281e4fbe1d402d9cb36e4bdeb e8bcf

Role: use terrain to hide your torso and legs. 'Crest' (pop the top of your body in and out of cover) to fire your entire arsenal. Do not attempt to brawl in this mech.

A build I haven't tried yet but want to try out as soon as I get a D-DC:

    Atlas D-DC Gauss + UAC5 + LL + Streak
    http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=1...a0b301d303a4db
(Notes: swap out the left LL for a ML in order to find room for AMS + raise heat efficiency? Where to put the ammo where it won't get critted and destroy mech? Switch right LL for ERLL to match range with other weapons better? Also: swap out UAC5 for AC5 in order to fit C.A.S.E. to Gauss Rifle? (prevents explosion ripping mech up) Looking forward to testing this one.)

edit: moved to this build due to Gauss being shit:

    My STK-3F 6LL build.

It's a bit mental, but provided you've got a bit of support (which you always should as Assault) it's great fun.

Be warned though - while you can just about fire all 6 large lasers simultaneously without overheating on most maps, the hotter maps will force you to reduce that. Unless, y'know, you're getting desperate and fancy one final blast of the cannons.

    So, any people still playing?

A friend kinda dragged me back into the game now few times so wondering if any RPS playing this still.

Had some fun after bolting 2 LB 10-X AC's into my ctf-4x (there's 1 med laser in there and nothing much else), was considering if Gauss' would be good alternate but seems they've been nerfed?

Yeah I still play this quite a bit. The game certainly has changed yes, PPC's arent as effective as they used to be also.

I haven't played in a few weeks because at my Elo the game is pretty dead. To find a match it usually takes 3-5 ''Failed to find a match'' searches before a successful search, and each of those failures takes ~5 minutes.

Once a match is found it's the same 24 tryhards in dull AC20+2PPC Highlander builds as always, and if I drop again after the match has ended I'm matched right back with them, or I face the 15 minute minimum wait if I delayed too long and I'm not in sync with those 24. Groups don't have the same trouble but I can't exactly log on to check the friends list and play a quick game while I wait when that would take a solid half an hour.

I've been playing again recently, and have similar problems to Jack (though not as bad).

Both those -4X builds are solid gold fun. Highly recommended.

This is my planned build for the Wolverine, tested it on the Shak and it feels pretty good. Should be even better with arm mounted ballistics.

I noticed since this week that it does always find a game for me, but sometimes it takes up to 5 minutes to find a game, and I'm not that good really. So maybe something else is wrong in the backend of their system.
