[AAR] [Sun] 20 Jan 2013 (Lethal Ladder)

    Missions:
    • Amphibious Attack
    • Roadside
    • GooseChase
    • Karavan
    • Afterparty: Two Days to Retirement Vybor

Over 50 comrades turned out tonight, which is pretty damn amazing. Thank you to everyone who came along, these playercounts give us the chance to play almost any FA mission, from large coops to adversarials and even allowing us to continue our adventures in puppeteering. That's a superb place for FA to be.

Amphibious Attack took us to Utes, an island we don't often visit. The large numbers we lost there may be a clue as to why, although the Party thanks brave heroes who managed to take the final (limited) objective on time. New mission, Roadside, was very very short, but comrade SuperU's QRF squad totally survived, making everything okay. Then there was the long distance craziness of GooseChase, which OPFOR managed to win for a change. Finally, granting comrade Mike's wish for puppeteering, Karavan saw comrade EBass' TK Army platoon fail to extract in the Party-supplied helicopters, but still kill all the insurgents. Frankly, given what was going down on insurgent radio comms (it involved the words "Assasin" and "Actual"), this was a good thing. The afterparty featured some armed long-hairs, grenades and a very lethal ladder.

As ever - and new comrades in particular - please post your thoughts, feedback, screenshots and video here (PM any of the hosts for details of FA YouTube channel) - and remember there the a new video ident by comrade YouTube Hero SuperU. Posts in the AAR threads really helps us (the hosts and mission makers), both with understanding how we can improve the experiences, and showing potential comrades what our sessions are like.

A diminutive session which more than made up for numbers in it's loveliness - you guys made the session incredibly easy to run, so thanks for that! Despite our low playercount we managed to seize a hill on Rolling Mat (Damn you wolf for your un-spellable mission names!). Unimpressed by our efforts against the AI, I endeavored to improve our kill-count by booting up a classic; Cinderella. Despite the death of the Bradley, Opfor lost a close battle (It was 2:1 guvna, honest!). Finally, Broney presented Opfor troops with a challenging, player-led AI force who cheated filthily (They were our IFVs! OURS!). Finally, we did some testing. Testing! TESTING!
Thanks everyone for coming along! Thoughts and comments on everything (Mission choice, hosting style, toy use) as well as reports go below comrade! :jihad:

PS: Please, please, please: If it's obvious that we don't want extra assets used, especially in an adversarial, it is NOT okay to take them from starting locations, especially if you're on the opposing team. The use of a BMP in the AiXX, whilst rather funny for Indie, ruined the mission for several players killed by it - that's just not cool, and just not the way we play, so let's keep that behavior out of the Tuesday and Sunday sessions.

As if last session's 50-something playercount wasn't enough, tonight we fielded over 60 brave comrades. The session itself ran for over 3.5 hours, with the afterparty taking us past the 4-hours mark. That's incredible, especially considering our record playercount (in the 70s) came in a joint session. Great showing, comrades!

    :coolbert:

With such a high playercount, we were able to begin the session with a 30-a-side play-through of newly revised Crateresistance; posts below this will no doubt relate the horror that was BLUFOR Alpha's Hamburger Hill experience. Then, in stark contrast to last Sunday's massacre, Roadside was a veritable masterpiece of platoon-scale action, including a helibourne QRF and the safe retrieval of all the trucks in the ambushed convoy. Rolling Bohica was absolutely epic in scale, so much so that after over an hour of pushing through the dark forests, fields, and towns of Chernarus (shooting down two Kamovs along the way) we reached a point where it was time to call a pause - next time, we'll re-start that mission from the town we reached. There was a huge amount of sneaky stuff going on in Swept SE, as the opposing forces almost swapped positions in an attempt to outflank each other. Finally, the afterparty stragglers were reminded of part of FA's distant past, when comrades were lucky to start with a Skorpion, in two rounds of Bedtime. Awesome fun, thank you to everyone who came along tonight!

An excellent session, I hope you'll agree. Due to the Bodgist faction mounting an attack on the Swiss gold reserves that Tiger's castle is constructed of, he had to take an early hiatus from the session, but we loyal FAsheviks pushed on with the counter attack in the post-match testing session. We started with Sakheola (Hello darkness, my old f..*BOOM*), and after a very closely fought battle in the pitch blackness of the Takistani winter we decided to brighten things up with some cooperation, in the form of Buffet (Hail to the bus driver!). ASR_AI turned up to evict us from hasty positions on the Takistani foothills we'd lost so many men for, and we retreated to the mountains for Skyline ("Do you think they see us?" *BZZZZRRRRT* "Yup"). We again got absolutely wiped by the incredible tenacity of ASR_AI. At this point we thought we'd go a little experimental; Crash site (AN2s are crap Kamikaze) was a maelstrom of parachutes and bullets. I don't really know who won that one, there was so much shooting! Finally (for me, at least) came Save the Saviors (LZ Bo-selecta is compromised!). A crash early on meant that the Delta force was down to 1/3 strength - not good. They then proceeded to get interdicted by several RPG rounds upon attempting to make a rooftop landing - even worse! After that, I've heard that The Colonels (A major hazard as far as I'm concerned) was played. I'm sure Azoz murdered Aziz. Or is it the other way around?

And now, things have gotten a little fuzzy. I see men, men in brown coats. They're pointing guns, so many guns... :suicide:

Yet another great showing, comrades! Despite the Amerikanski Super Bowl being on tonight we had over 50 comrades in the session, and the after-party was still rocking with 25 players 4 hours later! Thank you also to everyone for helping us slot quickly, and coping beautifully when we ran into some server issues mid-session.

    :coolbert:

We began with a rapid play-through of Internecine II, with OPFOR given only 30 minutes to clear out INDFOR from the village. It was brutal stuff, with the usual mixture of fear, confusion and friendly-fire (I'm not looking at you, comrade Halop). New mission, Fighting Withdraw, was a 90-minute epic as our Russian mechanised platoon methodically cleared valleys and mountain passes, before meeting a gruesome 9th Company style end in the mountains of Takistan (though not before comrade YouTube Hero SuperU sacrificed himself to prevent a Scud-B launcher falling into enemy hands). Then there was some server craziness that prevented us from playing Ashore (we'll fix that, don't worry), so we loaded up Rolling Matryoshka II and got our required fix of comrade Wolfenswan's sadism, as we once again found ourselves playing a doomed Russian platoon. Finally, an afterparty play-through of Fuel Utopia saw the session end as it began, with fear, confusion and friendly-fire, in an atmospheric post-apocalyptic setting.

Today's session started damn well; some really nice maneuvers and hill-fights in Compound it resulted in an unexpected OpFor win. Moving on to Convoi Polloi - a total win! Sort of. Some construction works held up extra hostiles, so we'll chalk it up as a victory. Some unknown radio traffic is preventing me from reading what happened in between this mission and internecine, so I'll assume it never existed. A hot (exploding truck) start to Internecine quickly turned into a whitewash - IndFor total victory! Finally, we played a little Cholo, and then a little testing - cows love OPFOR, it turns out.

Thanks everyone for coming along, thoughts, opinions and shouting below. SHOUTING! :psyboom:

At its peak, tonight's session saw 59 comrades in-mission together; I'm writing this post at 23:30 UK, a full 4 hours after the session start, and a double-figures afterparty is still raging. You comrades rock!

    :clint:

What didn't rock, or at least didn't go to plan, was the over-emphasis on NVG-less low-light fighting that characterised the first half of the session; for that, please accept my apologies as the session host. Clergyman's dawn setting worked as intended, but even after the bright daylight of CompoundIt, it was not a wise choice to run with the NVG-less dusk of Roadside II in a session that had already featured the terrifying blackness of Rolling Bohica Part 2. I'm just thankful that, unlike with my 5-year-old, I don't have to cuddle Tigershark when he's afraid of the dark. I just have to follow him up a hill and get shot in the face. Wait ...

Anyway, we opened up with a frantic battle to save a man of the cloth from captivity in a church (or prevent that from happening) in comrade Wilson's new adversarial, Clergyman, which featured a generational clash of BMPs. Then, picking up from the [Sun] 27 Jan 2013 (Keep on truckin') session, we completed Rolling Bohica Part 2 despite the horror of Horsemeat Hill, where much of Alpha met its end at the hands of darkness ... and friendly grenades. CompoundIt gave us a brief respite in the warm sunshine of Takistan, where BLUFOR was eventually put to the sword by INDFOR, despite some great individual acts of skill (I'm looking at you, cache-detonating-pilot-dude). Then it was back-to-black, as KSK puppets murderised our brave Takistani Army motorised platoon in the second sequel of the night, Roadside II. The official session closed-out with the adversarial version of Swept SE, which made us feel better - by providing sunlight - and then shot us in the face. Well, we shot each other in the face.

Tantalisingly close to the magic 50 mark, 49 comrades continued the fight for a socialist agrarian utopia; these healthy numbers helped us field well over a platoon in the major coop of the night, Shilkas of Nur, and play several meaty adversarial missions. Huge thanks to all comrades who came along tonight!

Crash Site, a brand new (and dynamic) adversarial from comrade Kalelovil, saw two small platoons of helibourne infantry zeroing in on a downed C-130 in the wooded hills of Chernarus. Advancing through the trees, I watched two air cows smash into each other, then fall to the ground as a single fireball. You can't script that stuff! Shilkas of Nur, a Folk-era classic that's been revamped to the FA ORBAT, proved to be a 90-minute meat grinder that we almost completed. Then comrade Zitron's sequel to Cholo, Cholo Episode 2, proved to be far more tactical than all of our previous battles over precinct 13. Being part of an assault that managed to successfully use covering fire to dominate the rooftops and allow friendlies to ascend the ladders was very cool. The adversarial theme then continued with The Generals.

Thanks for turning up for the games today, we played:

    Missions:
    • Holy stones
    • Broneys
    • Into the Sea
    • No man behind
    • Kefirz's- wip
    • Chernolo
    • Bedtime

Lots of death and some nice FT action in holy stones, some random confusion in broneys, combined beauty in into the sea, some men were left behind and then choppers were shot down and so were rozzers. Sa-61s suck.

A superb showing by the comrades saw 60 brave souls take up arms in support of our socialist agrarian revolution. The Party thanks all comrades who came along tonight, and helped us stage a super session with a mix of meaty adversarial missions and a truly epic play-through of comrade Hero Mission Maker Wolfenswan's classic, Vanguard (slightly remixed to reflect recent donations to our fund for equipment and vehicles). The after-party is still raging with over a third of the comrades still in play!

We kicked-off with a slightly tweaked Clergyman, in which a brutally efficient OPFOR garrison absorbed INDFOR's assault and murderised its surviving members at the church. Next, Crash Site saw the definition of a hot LZ, as OPFOR's helos landed right at the crash site, fighting a vicious scrap against AIs and human enemies alike before finally succumbing to the main part of BLUFOR's landing force. Then 59 comrades under the command of Stranglove and SuperU, most on foot but some in M113s and one T-55, mounted an epic assault on enemy positions to the north of Zargabad in Vanguard. Despite attempts by counter-revolutionaries* to spread conspiracy theories to the contrary, the platoon was victorious (pictorial evidence of the surviving heroes will be posted shortly). Finally, a quick round of Internecine DC provided many of us with a final helping of death before the after-party.

Thanks for playing tonight guys, I was exhausted and tired but people made life run very smoothly. In addition we had much death in belanus, some close quarters pvp and some grand scale co-op in Black Folk Down.

Apologies to Zitron with regards to the slotting mix up, blame kale's ninja moves.

Despite some technical challenges we managed to peak around 58 players. Thanks all for coming and for enduring the technical problems we faced. Ebass will be attending a meeting with Comrade Party Chairman Fer very shortly to answer for his "tactical retreat" that involved stealing the truck from his comrades and driving off into the sunset.

    Thanks to all who attented.

Also big thanks and shout out to Ajax who came to our rescue and offered up Onion Gamer's TS3 server for us to use whilst harakka was diligently working on getting our TS3 back up.

We had 47 comrades tonight, all furthering the goals of our socialist agrarian revolution. 47 is a nice number for so many reasons. The Party thanks all comrades who came along; in a weekend where so many hours were spent exploring ArmA 3, it was great to see our regular ArmA 2 session so well-attended.

In a move that surprised some, we began with a rapid run of Cholo Episode 2, during which the French-speaking hostages were subjected to torture and (in one case) death, before brave UN troops effected a rooftop landing in a Huey and finished off the drug-crazed gang-bangers. In Dash, the platoon again demonstrated its ability to move quickly across the sand to the north-eastern part of the Shapur complex. And die there. It's like our graveyard. The newly more-difficult Running Rabbit proved to be suitably epic, but sadly our M1A1 was destroyed, its fresh-faced crew dying in the flames (well, fresh-faced to FA's sessions; it like that scene in Memphis Belle, only with a debriefing screen). The first round of Crash Site provided a great deal of work for the Chernarussian equivalent of the FAA, but the second saw a successful helo extraction under fire.

Two favours to ask: during the briefing phase of the mission please remember to keep banter to sideChat. Similarly, please remember that we don't plan by committee: for non-commanders this means not seeking to debate the CO's plan; for COs, it's important to be directive and lay out a plan for everyone - please don't invite a massive discussion. These are important aspects of how FA's sessions are run, please help us by supporting them. Thanks!

[AAR] [Sun] 17 Mar 2013 (Ferrard the Fog Fetishist)

Many thank yous to the 54 brave comrades who charged headlong into the warm embrace of enemy boolets, spittle, and tank shells side by side, arms interlocked and singing! Today, we died in the pursuit of the likes of:

    • Poctalon
    • Whitewash
    • Greenola (not so much a "heavy fog" as a goddamned shamal storm!)
    • Dash
    • Fuel Raid

We began with Wolfenswan's updated and working Poctalon, wherein NAPA data thieves bashed themselves piecemeal against the veritable stone wall of Russkie boolets. Even bringing down one of their choppers in a hail of DShKM fire didn't halt the unstoppable Russian juggernaut. Whitewash was a cakewalk as we waltzed into Zelenogorsk while a symphony of miniguns obliterated anything and everything in our path. All that changed when the fire nation T-72's attacked. Greenola featured an agonizingly slow chopper ride and the very befuddled and confused US Army platoon wandering around blind in a sandstorm for 30 minutes while IndFor twiddled its thumbs. Dash was an abortive lesson on why charging machine-guns and autocannons with Jackals and civvie vehicles is never a good idea, and we closed out the night with a nice Fuel Raid, featuring some frenetic worm action as OpFor got whittled down until only three reached the gas station.

Again, thank you for coming along on the ride, and a special thank you to everyone who attended today's workshop! A reminder to all workshop attendees, please be on time in order to minimize headache and glitches.

    Enjoy your workweek!

    ~ Ferrard
