Cool/badass/swanky female characters
Something something something tired cliche something teenager wank fantasy something something misogyny something something.
But enough negativity. Lets celebrate some of the games that got it right.
A few caveats: must be human or at least a recognisably female anthromorph. Robotic voice overs need not apply
Does not suffer a "girlfriend lobotomy" where a formally independant strong willed character instantly transforms into a good little waifu from one injection of your Super Sperm, sorry Morrigan/Viconia/"pirate hooker from DA2".
Must be a major character with an impact on the story. No one line one scene NPCs.
Keyword "Character" not costume, a badass character must do more than just look good.
My favourite three lesser known female characters
Officer Cunningham from Silent Hill Downpour.
(20:00 notice how she never takes the gun off him)
Terrible game, awesome co star. As tortured and emotionally screwed as you'd expect from a Silent Hill quasi-heroine but still so much of a bad ass that she'll chase a prisoner through Silent Hill.
Kriea from Knights of the Old Republic 2
If ever your gran started a death cult in your honour.
Clem from Walking Dead
A character who does the impossible. She made me give a shit about a zombie game.

I'll second Clem.
I know some always take umbrage but I really like Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. There's a place for non complex heroic female characters just as there is for male. She's likable and though her story may be simple it's well told and she's pretty cool.
Nico Collard from the Broken Sword series. Good voice actor as well even if it is a bit hammy in times. Still waiting for a sexy Irish or Italian accent from the main female character in a game though!
Mona Sax - Max Payne 2. Ridiculous name, badass character.
April Ryan's Dreamfall incarnation. I think April in The Longest Journey and Zoe as she is in Dreamfall aren't quite what you were looking for in this thread (but if they are then that's fine too as they are both excellent characters). Loved the transformation into kickass (if somewhat jaded) revolutionary.

I wanted to mention Faith, since she technically qualifies on account of kicking people in the head, but her gender happens to be completely irrelevant...
Alyx isn't badass in a classical sense, but she's more alive than 99% of other game characters, male or female.

In all it's nonsensical and juvenile glory; Trishka Novak from Bulletstorm.
Sadly not on PC, but on a slightly more serious note; Elena Fisher from the Unchartedseries is a great character with a very believable motivation and background - and she's definitely no damsel in distress. I'd say Naughty Dog really did a good job on not just Elena but all the major characters in the series.
Though not necessarily cool or 'bad ass', I have fond memories of Dreamfall and its protagonist Zoë Castillo and the way she grew during the unfolding of the story.
Perhaps of related interest, the thread 'Unrequited Love'.

Yeah Faith, April Ryan, Jade were all awesome but I thought they were kind of obvious. I wanted to highlight some of the lesser known ones.
Speaking of which.
D'arci Stern from Urban Chaos (Mucky Foot 1999)
A black modestly proportioned, more or less, female lead at a time when even Lara was considered a daring break from tradition. Sure she could do with an undershirt and the plunging neckline is nuts but hell she wearing a bullet proof vest and for that time that is the equivalent of a burkha in modesty. She also fought like Batman in Arkham Asylum before it was cool. So you gotta respect that.
I'm pleased no one's mentioned Alyx. As cool as her character design and writing is I just can't get past all the awkward "Oooh you're so big and strong" ego stroking she does. It might work if Gordon wasn't such a vacuum of a character but as it is she might as well be talking straight to the player. And that's creepy. Sadly I'd say the same about the women in Uncharted but in that case its because they're hitting on Nathan and I think he's a complete amoral mass murdering bell end. It still feels like they're there as a Bond Girl, a sexy trophy for the hero to achieve.
@ His Master's Voice
Coolest character Bioware has ever written ruined just, goddamnit. The female Warden relationship (which is what I got) was much more sweet and didn't destroy her whole back story.
Her default dress is completely ridiculous and the first thing I always do is give her a costume change. I just can't take anything she says seriously when she's dressed like that.
Really the original concept art tells you all you need to know.

More or less total badasses:
Rose of Sharon Cassidy
Most iterations of Lara Croft
Badasses that were created as walking sex symbols:
Every other iteration of Lara Croft
Every Bioware companion ever

Jeannette "Angel" Devereaux.
So badass that the Kilrathi Crown Prince thought she was worthy of a warriors... death... oh God why do I know this.

How are we on angels? There's the Commander of the Hellguard, Uriel, from Darksiders. Spent centuries fighting demons, serves faithfully and is unwavering into battle, even ones it is unlikely she will win. Is noble of spirit and will do the right thing, regardless of cost. I would rate her as cool, badass and swanky. Mostly the first two though.
In terms of the caveats:
-Whilst a romance is noted, it is not with War (or Death) and is otherwise completely independent of anything that happens in either game.
-Impact on story? Oh, boy! As leader of one of the two main forces in Darksiders, yeah, it's pretty big! She's integral in both games, though much lesser an appearance in the second.
Please see attached. Note, contains all the big spoilers of the game. Might wanna not watch if you've never played, more for those who want to remind themselves of the role. I'm not kidding.

24-02-2013, 02:03 AM #17... I take the lives of a few to protect the lives of many. I commit acts of war to preserve the greater peace. I take no joy in killing, but make no mistake; I'll do what needs to be done. Because it's my job. It's my duty. My name is Sam Fisher, and I am a Splinter Cell.

I quite like Rochelle from Left 4 Dead 2. She's a very rounded, well conceived character; rather more so than Zoey. She's definitely the most reliable and together of the four. Sadly, the guys get all the best lines in that game. Also, Depeche Mode? Hmm.
