I agree with the speedrun comment, it's probably only exhausting to do and not really memorable, it might be worth focussing on one part(Mediterranean, central europe, scandinavia etc).

Pretty much this. Love a bit of mediterranean but would really like to spend more time in Berlin, work my way east a bit perhaps via Austria to Hungary/Poland.

Don't want to toot my own horn but the British Isles are pretty fab too. The western isles of Scotland and the Northern Irish coast are amazing places. Also whisky on both sides of the sea. It's like the whisky triangle.

A trip that never leaves the shores of the North Sea or the Baltic would give you a lot to see, as well as huge swings in local culture, for example going France-Belgium-Netherlands-Germany. Some of the most fought over patches of earth in history

Also, Marseille devoid of charm ? and you recommend NICE instead ? O_O Nice is a rotten city, with only the glitz of the Cote d'Azur to hide the fact that it's ugly, full of cars and retired people, with nothing to do for young ones and certainly not worth visiting.
Big towns I recommend to see in France : Paris, Lille, Strasbourg, Marseille. That doesn't account for smaller cities, or places that are in the countryside.

Also, i agree with Cooper, don't go to "Europe". Just pick a country, any of them is worth a trip all by itself, even some cities like London, Paris, Berlin are worth a trip all by themselves.
Don't get me wrong, I liked Marseille a lot, but it feels like what it is; a port city. It lacks the charm of places like Avignon.

I also agree about Nice, but last time I checked Nice was easier to get ferries from (?).

@Quanta Last time I was in Czech Rep. the trains going east towards Slovakia were very good, I think. But that was about 14 years ago now.

Do you really want me to recommend Corinthia? because I never will. Its a hive of nationalist scum and villainy.

Also, you could go to either holland, belgium, france. its all mostly the same culture anyway if youre not looking at many specifics.

If you want a more eastern europe flavour, go to vienna. Its safe and still eastern ;D

Do not listen to the pale, ill-looking, barely civilized bearded men from the North.

    Mediterranean coast is awesome.

Enjoy the Italian ice creams, the sun, the juicy Greek oranges, the warmth, the nightly tapas in Barcelona, the beautiful and calm sea, the French ratatouille, ...

    @Cooper > ok, fair enough

If you're thinking of training around, you should check out http://www.interrail.eu/ as an option. (edit, see Boris got in early with that one)

The one-country passes can be cheaper than a single ticket in that country sometimes (although beware that you often still need to book intercity trains).

Montpellier's a nice city on the south coast of France, I'd say - although not near anything especially intersting tourism wise.

I really like Catalonia in Spain. I also really like spending time in the alps, but I suspect that you can get a similar experience in NA really.

If you want to do Paris, PM me. My girlfriend used to live there and loves coming up with customised tourist suggestions based on interests.

Not entirley true. Lots (although still the minority) of high speed stations are out of town, although normally with a good tram/bus/whatever to the town centre. Equally, I can think of a good few places in the UK with outskirty train stations, am sure that is true of elsewhere.

I think the Giraffe restaurant explosion incident just got a whole new dimension added.
