    Tomb Raider: Any Good?

In the absence of any RPS WIT so far, is anyone playing this yet, have any thoughts? Is it worth me installing or does it look like I should be selling my steam key on ebay?

I played for about three hours last night when it unlocked and really enjoyed it. I hadn't played any of the Tomb Raiders since the very first one though, so I'm not a big fan of the series and therefore may be more lenient to any changes they may have made that fans may dislike. I really like the RPG-like elements and exploration.

It looks great, has good configuration options and is quite fun so far, if a bit gruesome and brutal at times.

I've played some of the original series and found it to be OK. I've never had a whiff of the uncharted series, which people have been comparing this to, so by all accounts this I'm going to enjoy it. Thanks clorax!

I think it's awesome. Just needs a patch or two.

Played it for 2 hours and so far my feelings are... mixed at best. There is nothing wrong with the core gameplay, but I have a lot of little problems with the game. The biggest one of these is the QTE events. I'm not against QTE events (I accept them as part of modern gaming, even if they aren't exactly fun), but every time a developer includes them and then doesn't show an actual proper key prompt it makes me want to scream. How am I supposed to know what that red circle icon means in relation to my keyboard? It's also not very clear when I should press or when I should mash, resulting in me doing some sections several times over.

    The other problem is lazy or just downright dumb writing. Some examples;

-Lara finds a bag and decides to empty its contents into her magical hold all pockets instead of just taking the bag itself.
-Lara finds a built and already burning campfire and then states "It looks abandoned".
-She then piles more wood onto the already burning campfire and wastes her last match lighting it...
-At one stage one of your friends on the radio contacts you and says "I can see a fire in the old ruins." Really... you can see the fire in the old ruins that are buried in the middle of the jungle? Impressive.

Like I said, I'm still fairly early on (it's still funneling me down a path quite heavily) so I hope that when it opens up a bit I can maybe ignore the story and just enjoy traversing the jungle and raiding tombs because I do enjoy the gameplay, and as far as pc ports go it has all the graphical options you could wish for and runs great. I did see a few graphical bugs, but I'm hoping a patch will fix them. I'm curious to see what the RPS WIT is like.

I fucking hate XP in the left corner of screen when you do something and its like YOU GOT FUCKING 25 +XP wotowowotw..Its killing immersion, for which they strive so much with this game, she is vulnerable and all that shit..Then in other scene you shot 15 guys with bow.

I've played a few hours and it's an ok / good game. We don't really have many of this kind on the pc, so it's a nice change. I've only played the original of the earlier ones and frankly can't remember anything of it, so don't consider this an opinion of a long time fan or anything. I expect it to be somewhat short and very low on replayability, so it probably won't reach the 1 hour of entertainment for 1 euro that I keep as a good deal.

I don't like the gaminess, the xp notifiers, the shoot 10 lanterns etc. There's a large focus on collectables too and it's kind of overkill, there's plenty here for completionists though.

But I like Lara, which is kind of important and I'm enjoying the adventure. There are some great environments and the side tombs are fun albeit brief for the most part (I bet they release bunch of huge DLC tombs) - they're most reminiscent of the puzzling of Tomb Raider's old.

I also quite like the traversal mechanics, segueing from jumping into rock climbing, rope shooting and the rest. It's entertaining to challenge yourself to get across areas in the most fluid manner.

The game doesn't really broaden itself out to the level of true open-world, there are areas that you visit in a pretty linear course that you can return to and seek out the aforementioned side-tombs, relics and documents.

It's not the perfect game or even the perfect Tomb Raider, but I'm still enjoying it a great deal and I'm glad they released it from the baggage of what came before.

Nah, the graphics options are excellent. Everything on max destroys my PC, which while not ninja-gaming-bastard easily outstrips the current-gen consoles.

Old gen console graphic? ...either you haven't actually seen the game running on PC or you're just plain retarded.

One of the things I used to like about RPS is that it lacked a lot of the PC Gamer elitist nonsense - I'm not sure if it's their (wrong-headed IMO) decision to run articles on PC builds or just an inevitable thing with PC gaming, but the idiots and their "console sucks", "controller suck", "it's not got SSAO it's not a game" mentality have arrived

and, frankly, I'd like them to take their elitist, hardware focussed, FPS obsessed, technical knob-fuckery elsewhere - if you cannot see the game for your own wrong-headedness, you have nothing to offer anyone else...

Meanwhile - everything I've read about TR is reasonably positive - aside from the issue of it's overblown narrative not really meshing with it's "shoot people in the face or get impaled on shit" gameplay :)

I've just played through the opening sequence and so far it seems pretty good. I was horrified that the very first shot after the pre-rendered opening sequence looked abysmal (graphically) but thankfully it got much better.

The QTEs seem pretty daft. I mean really, do they need to prompt you to move left in order to make Lara dodge a falling rock on the right-hand side of the screen? Just let me figure it out!

I also agree with the earlier comment about the xp notifications being distracting, but I think that's in part due to the fact they've done such a great job of not having a UI for the most part that when notifications do pop up, they're more noticeable.

That said, so far it's hooked me a lot more than Far Cry 3 did.

Still not sure why they've created a "bonus trailers for other square enix games" DLC though.

    EDIT:

Also really like how they've made the platforms and handholds look so natural. Here are some screenshots at "ultimate" quality. If only I didn't have to go to work tomorrow...

I think this is a bug, there should be nothing when you get there.

Enjoying it so far. Though there are some QTE's there's quite a lot of nice downtown to just wander around and collect items and stuff. Plus I like Lara, and the sexism complaints seem wrong so far.

Yeah I'm enjoying it so far, save for the annoying dynamite throwers who can go die in a fire. Very pretty game too, especially with the extra hair graphics turned on; though it looks a bit weird because only Lara's hair behaves differently.

Just a question for any series fans though: Were Tomb Raider games always so mystical? I always had the sense that the series was more alt history than magic, but I don't remember any of the other games.

Three hours in and I am definitely standing by my "torture porn" assertions (of which I had many, seriously, I may have married this term one night in Vegas) but I'm getting where the whole "this is like Uncharted" biz is coming from.

Lara kills something like a billion dudes. Seriously, I'm not so much an expert spelunker and archaeologist as I am a kleptomaniac GI Jane. I think I'm matching my kill count in Spec Ops, except perhaps without quite as heavy Apocalypse Now vibes.

Yeah, I just watched a video review that showed that bit properly. Kind of a weird bug.

I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the game now and I've warmed to it some. I still have some niggles though. I think the fact I need to press one button to instigate a stealth kill and then mash a second different button to succeed is really badly designed and unintuitive. It's also a shame there is no newgame+ option for completing skill trees, weapon upgrades etc.

It has some absolutely amazing vistas and rollercoaster moments though.

@Kandon Arc; Yeah, Tomb Raider games have always been a bit mystical. Giant sea monsters, Dinosaurs, the Grail Quest etc.

Yeah I was actually surprised to hear this has that too. I thought they were going all realistic on us.

I sort of get what that dev meant about protecting Lara, in that when she's died it's always been quite upsetting and I don't want that to happen again. It's not like the stupid deaths of Dead Space (which are fine), they are quite harrowing.

Could you say more? I'm staying away from supporting this game unless I know it doesn't actually end up using rape as character development like the clueless marketing department seemed to (constantly) suggest it would.
