I read the first two entries and found them very entertaining. Thanks.

But now my eyes bleed from internet/Tomb Raider overload and I must away to bed.

Is there a legitimate living to be made in FNV?

    I suppose there is; scavenging.

    Hmmm, watch this space.

    Good stuff : )
On a related note, I've recently finished playing TW2 with the gamepad and I thought the controls were really smooth and perfect for the 3rd person view.

How is Skyrim played with a Pad? I would still need to use SkyUI ?

Great read, really makes me want to give this a go. I made an Argonian dock worker in Windhelm with the alternate start mod and really liked that beginning, starting with nothing and doing small jobs in town to scrounge up money for supplies. This makes me want to go back and give it another try.

Alternate start is what made Skyrim finally playable for me. I kept starting over and playing a while then abandoning the game for weeks. The alternate start mod finally got me hooked into the world. Not exactly sure why, beyond obvious reasons, but there are subtle less-than-obvious reasons it seems. Something about how I view the game as a whole and how my character's coming into the world impacts that. Skyrim allowed you to basically come up with anything (unless the story later reveals an origin that I haven't learned) but since the beginning felt like a tutorial it always seemed like there was a point where I'd say, "Okay, now I'm ready to play," and that would come with an inclination to start again, which of course would just go back to the beginning of the tutorialish part.

A few months ago I moved my PC to the living room to turn my office into a nursery. I started gaming in Big Picture with a gamepad. This is what I took away from that experience as pertains to Skyrim:

I had to remove SkyUI. The font was so small I couldn't see anything. The vanilla UI is better suited for a pad anyway. Obviously, you can't navigate through the menus or move around as quickly/fluidly as with a M+KB.

I also removed my no auto aim mod, to help ease the pad's struggles with fine aiming. I couldn't headshot a deer sprinting across the other side of a clearing like with my mouse, but I could more than get by.

Back when I played a couple feet away from a 24" monitor, I kept my fov at 90. I couldn't stand playing at the default. I felt like I had blinders on, and it made me sick. After moving to sitting 10' away from a 40" TV, I play at the default fov, and it actually looks and feels great. For some reason, it makes the world seem even more massive. I had already spent over 250 hours in the game, and here I was standing in the fields outside of Whiterun just marveling at the scale of all the mountains off in the distance.

The worst part about using a pad is that you only get 2 hotkeys (I think there is a mod on the nexus for more, however). I play with a realistic lighting mod, which makes dungeons near-impossible to navigate without a torch. I have my sword and my crossbow bound to my 2 hotkeys, obviously, which means I'm constantly having to pause, go into favorites, and swap out my torch and shield. It's insanely annoying.

The BEST part about using a pad is that instead of the three movement speeds you get with a keyboard (walk, run, sprint), you also get every speed in between. It's great to be in a shop and not have to choose between a slow crawl, or running into counters and knocking stuff all over.

You also have to be mindful of what mods you are using. Some of them don't play nice with a pad. I was using a mod that sets the movement speed of all NPCs to that of my own, so when doing an escort mission, you don't have to constantly run ahead, stop, run ahead, stop. This mod completely disabled the sprint function on the gamepad. It took me a few minutes to get it all sorted out. At first I thought I just couldn't find the sprint button.

So in summary, it's not unplayable with a gamepad, but the M+KB is still far superior, just as expected. It is a first-person game, after all.

    For Realz Tho

Is there a blog like this about New Vegas? The casual comment earlier about SinisterAgents's blog gave me a burning desire to read such a blog. Just started playing New Vegas for a 2nd time, ignoring story and missions, and its really a great game.

    awesome thread.

i spent my first ~30 or so hours in skyrim as a loinclothed hunter doing nothing but stalking/killing deer with a bow and turning them into hides. way more fun than in my subsequent "normal" playthroughs.

Huh, scarily similar to mine though I hadn't heard of this guy before! He's a lot funnier than me, though.
