Wot I Think – Magrunner: Dark Pulse

There are some games I can see coming from over the horizon. The glow of burgeoning hype – and sometimes the glow of special novelty, or sheer awesome – is so bright that you just can’t miss them. Other games, hmm, they pretty much have to be on the same street before I spot them. Whether they will then turn my head as they pass, well, that can come down to any number of things. Usually, though, it’s whether they manage to scatter a few intriguing ideas in my path, so that I have to pay attention.

In the case of Magrunner I’ve been peering at from miles off. Because it just looks that interesting. To use the crude shorthand of thematic conventions, and to get you up to speed: it’s Portal with Magnets versus Cthulhu. That’s a checklist of ideas that I can’t help taking an interest in.

Now that it’s been released, here’s wot I think.

Interview: 3AM Explain Magrunner – Dark Pulse

As the first-person puzzler genre consolidates its form following the genre-cracking aftershocks of Portal, there are now a number of pretenders insisting that they are far more than mere footnotes to the Valve masterpiece. One of these is 3AM’s Magrunner: Dark Pulse, which throws its first-person tools into the terrifying maw of a Cthulhu mythos story set in a physics-warping magnetic future. With the game arriving later this month, I knew it was time to speak to the team find out a bit more.

What The Cthuck? It R’Lyeh Is A Magrunner Trailer

‘A Bit Portalish’ is a genre that I have in my head. It’s not brimming with games, but there are a few interesting ones in there nonetheless. The most interesting of all is Magrunner: Dark Pulse, a game that ran the gamut of crowd-funding acceptance or rejection and came out with a pile of money. How did it part people from their money? By taking the strange route of being ‘A Bit Lovecraftian’. Madness follows hither.

Magrunner Devs Craft Their Game With Love

Magrunner Dark Pulse is one of my favourite crowd-sourcing pitches: a first-person puzzler set in the future, only with Cthulhu Mythos. They explain: “In the near future of 2050, a handful of brilliant young citizens are chosen by the Gruckezber Corporation to enter the Magtech deep space exploration training program. What begins as the opportunity of a lifetime soon descends into madness and cosmic horror!” So it’s Lovecraft vs Portal. Yeah. Anyway, it’s been a while since we heard from them – the project was funded last summer – but now they’ve sent word that they’ve launched a shiny new website, complete with a devblog which will apparently be regularly updated with information about the project. Expect more information soon, via the magical medium of an RPS interview. In the meantime, there’s a glimpse of gameplay footage here.

Magrunner Mixes Blade Runner, Portal, And… Cthulhu?

Man, that's not fair. Magnets will be so much cooler in the cyber Cthulhu future.

At the very least, I have to give 3AM Games credit for fearlessly dumping all their favorite things into a blender and hoping for the best. Last time I did that, I got a runny soup of pumpkin pie, ice cream, and the collected works of Robert Heinlein. 3AM, though, is calling its thematic Frankenstein monster Magrunner, describing it as “a first-person action puzzle game set in a cyberpunk reimagining of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos.” There’s an eerily Portal-2-esque trailer after the break. I hope the final version is rife with snarky narrations from the squid-shaped End of Days himself.
