Prey 2 Trailer Is Live Action, Worrying

By Jim Rossignol on June 3rd, 2011.

Hello, ladies.
There’s some stuff you hope will never happen when you are trapped on a plane. This is one of those things. Nothing of the game is shown, of course, but for a live-action vignette to say a bit about how the game is going to be I think it works. Aliens get shot.

For a more in-depth reason to be interested, check out Alec’s preview of the game. Open-world space bounty-hunter has me intrigued…

Interview: Prey 2′s Oddness, Freedom & Ians

By Alec Meer on May 12th, 2011.

So we already know the broader picture of Prey 2 – a sandbox ‘alien noir’ world, with you as a bounty hunter taking on contracts – and how it’s a far cry from the first game, but what about the details? Let’s ask Prey 2 developer Human Head’s project lead Chris Rinehart and chief creative officer Jim Sumwalt for a closer look at just how the missions, the morality and the money-making works – as well as why they decided to leave the first game’s play style behind, why the themes are similar even if the lead character is not, whether it’s all urban or if things get wilder, and why the hell he’s called ‘Killian Samuels…’

Preview: Prey 2

By Alec Meer on April 18th, 2011.

I'm sorry I'm not a portal, I'm sorry!

I’m very surprised. Good surprised, not bad surprised. Prey is not a game I feel anything about, to be completely honest. I know it has its fans, but for me it remains part of that mass of id Tech 4-based stodgy shooters which went heavy on bio-mechanical corridor-pounding gloss at the expense of play I found truly engaging, despite early-game experiments with big ideas. Prey 2? More corridors, more textbook murderous aliens, more blamblamblam, no thank you ma’am.

Except it’s not. I was not expecting a game where you spend a significant time without a gun taking up half your screen. I was not expecting an open-world game, inspired more by the likes of Red Dead Redemption and STALKER than by Quake and Call of Duty. I was not expecting a game where your interaction with funny-headed aliens is as much about making moral judgements as it is shooting them. I’m surprised.

Not Much: Prey 2 “Screenshot” Revealed

By Jim Rossignol on April 7th, 2011.

Aliens and a dead alien, yesterday
Yeah, not much in the way of news this, but I suppose I’ll grudgingly report it. A Prey 2 screenshot has been revealed by Bethesda. It reveals some kind of alien bar, and is entitled “marketplace”. You can see it above and click on it for full size. I suppose it’s more like an in-engine image, rather than a screenshot in any “here’s how it will actually look as you play” way. I mean it’s not a great image, for an early image, is it? But anyway, I am grumpy and I need more tea. There’s also a concept art image, which you can see over on BethBlog.

Aliens On A Plane: First Prey 2 Trailer

By Quintin Smith on March 16th, 2011.

Man On The Floor On A Plane! 'I've HAD IT with this man on the floor,' etc

The first Prey 2 trailer has dribbled onto the internet, like a splodge of molten entertainment. You’ll find it contained after the jump, but be forewarned- it’s an entirely live action affair, containing actual humans actually reacting to imaginary stuff. Thanks to RPS reader Gabe “Fear Factory” McGrath for sending this in.

EDIT: Oh, snap! This isn’t useless at all. It corroborates what Kotaku was saying about you playing not a Native American, but a Federal Marshal, and if that’s true- well, in the same post Kotaku say Prey 2 will be an open-world game with you playing a bounty hunter on an alien planet. This game just got very interesting. More details after the jump.

Update: Prey 2: Not Id Tech 5: Has A Hat: OK?

By Alec Meer on March 15th, 2011.

And they say John is the best investigative journo on RPS

Contrary to the entire games press’ presumption yesterday, semi-unexpected sequel Prey 2 is not going to use the very shiniest, newest version of id Software’s graphics engine, id Tech 5, after all. Bethesda’s Pete Hines waggled his finger at IGN to correct the misconception, claiming that Prey 2′s been on the drawing board for so long that id Tech 5 essentially turned up too late.

Also below: your first-ever image of Human Head’s sci-fi shooter reboot. It features a man with guns. And a hat. Waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Surprise! Prey 2 Confirmed

By Alec Meer on March 14th, 2011.

That's Prey 1. So don't link to this saying RPS has exclusive screens. But we do wish we did. Can we have some?

We’ve been hearing all manner of rumours about this over the last week, and now official word has arrived. By which I mean “an email.” Games journalism: not always rocket science.

Yes, Bethesda Softworks are going to publish a game called Hunted this year, and then a game called Prey 2 next year. Hooray! They sure do like their hunting and preying, though. What next? Victim? Target? Assassinee? Bloke What Is Running Away From Another Bloke What Is Trying To Kill Or Eat Him Or Something?

3D Realms To Continue “Portal Race”

By Jim Rossignol on March 18th, 2008.

IGN delivered an interesting quote in yesterday’s Scott Miller interview, regarding the direction 3D Realms are taking with the new projects they’re working on:

While Prey pioneered the portal concept, Valve’s Portal took it to an all-new level. It really shows what you can do when you focus on a single core cool gameplay concept. So, while Portal impressed the heck out of us, it has also inspired us to return the favor to Valve and hopefully leapfrog them as they did us. We believe we have new ideas for portals that will keep the portal race interesting.

That’s an interesting statement: “The Portal Race” could be an awesome period of FPS development history.

Prey 2, 3D Realms 0

By John Walker on March 17th, 2008.

The keen-eyed super-spies at Shacknews spotted some briefly-appearing proof that a sequel to Prey is in development. The news slipped out when a website for a new production company, Radar Group, named some of the games on which it would be working. The company, set up by 3D Realms founder Scott Miller and his buddy Jim Perkins, intends to work with developers to take original ideas, and develop them into giant, cross-media megaliths. Two of the games they named were 3D Realms titles, the forthcoming Earth No More, and the surprise appearance of Prey 2.

Yup - that's all there is.

It’s all been hurriedly pulled down, the evidence swept under the carpet. But this is the internet, and under the carpet is where we all live! So fortunately the brief description and tiny piece of concept art are right here.

“This time, abandoned and framed for the disappearance of his family, Tommy escapes an Earth that no longer wants him for a future that cannot survive without him.”

Er, ok, so that’s not much really. But still, it’s funny when games get announced before the publishers want them to, and we’ll always have that.
