Ironclad On Why RTS Is Dying, MOBA Needs To Evolve

By Nathan Grayson on February 1st, 2013.

In the grand scheme of MOBAs, Ironclad’s Sins of a Dark Age is quite the bold thing. AI directors, random rule-rewriting quests, and other RPG-influenced, flow-shattering shenanigans? This certainly isn’t DOTA 2.5 or Assortment of Apologues, and it’s not trying to be. But at one point, it was doing its damndest to be so much more. Unfortunately, the RTS-style base-building and commanding didn’t pan out, and Ironclad scratched them almost entirely. But according to studio director and co-owner Blair Fraser, his MOBA’s retching rejection of all things RTS is indicative of much larger problems for both genres. One, he argues, is on its death bed, and the other could be following suit if it doesn’t start blazing new trails.

DotAbsolution: See Sins Of A Dark Age In Motion

By Richard Cobbett on January 29th, 2013.

So, which IS better - League of Legends or Dota 2? Never been quite sure.

Swapping deep space for fantasy, Sins Of A Solar Empire creators Ironclad Games have released some game and talky-head footage of their upcoming MOBA Sins Of A Dark Age – the main sins being wrath, greed, and – no doubt the most hated by its players – sloth.

It’s hoping to be a bit more dynamic than most, using its Realm Quests system to keep shaking things up, but don’t take my word for that. Here’s the game director himself showing off some of that ‘gameplay’ stuff that’s been quite popular lately. There will be clicking.

Sins Of A Dark Age Enters New Age, Drops RTS Bits

By Nathan Grayson on January 9th, 2013.

Sins of a Dark Age ain’t what it used to be. In spite of my totally sly, semi-misleading opening remark, I don’t necessarily mean it’s worse. However, I have no idea if it’s better either. It’s just, you know, different. In short, though, Ironclad’s decided to remove the RTS-like Commander role from its MOBA flagship, so now it’s hoping to weave between the toes of titans like DOTA 2 and League of Legends by emphasizing RPG aspects. “Realm Quests,” as they’re known, are triggered by a Left-4-Dead-ish Quest Director and introduce special conditions into otherwise standard MOBA matches. “Imagine dealing with the threat of a vermin carried deadly plague, welcoming the arrival of timely reinforcements, ordering your own personal troops, escorting a merchant convoy, hauling back stolen treasure, racing to gain favor of a powerful ally or even working cooperatively with your enemy against a deadly common threat,” says Ironclad. More details after the break.

First Look: Sins Of A Dark Age

By John Walker on March 14th, 2012.

Wait, this isn't shopping in space!

It was with profuse apologies that I entered the demo room for Sins Of A Dark Age. “No, I haven’t, I’m sorry,” I said meekly when asked if I’ve played Sins Of A Solar Empire. Am I familiar with RTS games then? “Er, sorry, no,” with more looking at my shoes. DOTA? “Barely… Look, I’m the wrong person for this, okay. But see: I’m good at taking information and writing it in an entertaining fashion.” But here’s the thing – by the end of my time watching the game being played, I rather wanted a go.

Sins Of A Dark Age: The World’s First F2PMOBARTS

By Craig Pearson on February 23rd, 2012.

STARING EYES

I just Googled ‘F2PMOBARTS’ and received nothing. Well done, Ironclad Games! Sins Of A Dark Age, has broken the all-seeing eye of the world’s best search engine, and brought out its passive-aggressive side: “Did you mean: ‘F2P MOBARTS’”. No, Google. I did not. F2PMOBARTS, you are officially a new genre. Now to explain what all those words mean.
