Wombo Combos With My Wallet: Abyss Odyssey Released

By Ben Barrett on July 16th, 2014.

Live in Abyss Odyssey, buy a house in Abyss Odyssey, get your mail forwarded to Abyss Odyssey

Got them post-EVO blues? Don’t worry, the perfect solution has arrived. Abyss Odyssey is the latest offering of ACE Team, the Zeno Clash fellas and fellettes, and it’s a 2D combo of roguelike, platformer and fighting game. The most interesting of those is the last, with everything from move-cancelling to combo systems and character selection integrated into its campaign. Absorbing slain enemies’ souls will allow transformation into them, with a whole new set of abilities, in possibly the one single idea that’s had me most excited in months.

Ruddy Women! Watch 7 Minutes Of Abyss Odyssey

By Alice O'Connor on July 10th, 2014.

Bop.

“This is no place for a woman! Get outta here!” a soldier cries in the opening seconds of Abyss Odyssey. Really, a hellish abyss opened up in 19th century Chile is no place for anyone, and she certainly fares better than all those poor chaps. So begins Zeno Clash chaps ACE Team’s procedurally-generated punchy platformer, as shown off in a new seven-minute gameplay video. Or six minutes of gameplay then another of cutscenes. Look, it’s the start of the game, you guys.

Likeable Roguelike-like: Abyss Odyssey Begins On July 15

By Alice O'Connor on June 20th, 2014.

I believe player has turned into a giant tree in this particular fight.

I do have a soft spot for studios who started in modding, but I look forward to ACE Team’s games for more reasons than Batman Doom. From the first-person face-punching of Zeno Clash to Rock of Ages‘ competitive tower defence/demolition, their games have been weird and interesting and fun and ambitious and surprising and attractive. So I’m pretty pleased to hear that Abyss Odyssey is coming in only a few weeks–on July 15, to be precise.

In another genre shift (I also like that ACE Team do this), Abyss Odyssey is a roguelike-like 2D platforming beat ‘em up with and a pretty deep fighting system.

Getting Hype With Abyss Odyssey

By Ben Barrett on April 4th, 2014.

I hadn’t heard of Abyss Odyssey before today. ACE Team‘s previous titles, the Zeno Clash series, hold a place in my heart as some of the most weirdly beautiful games I’ve ever seen. They’ve got similar roots in fighting game brilliance to this, which favours a 2D platforming perspective for something a bit more standard. The main draw is being able to switch form into any one of a number of characters and enemies you find throughout the game. Which brings us to the latest trailer, a combo video of sorts (and there’s nothing quite like a surprise combo) showing off what one of their testers managed to do with their combat engine. Spinning kick your way through to it below.

Zeno Clash Dev On Abyss Odyssey’s Procedural Insanity

By Nathan Grayson on March 7th, 2014.

You certainly can’t knock Zeno Clash and Rock of Ages developer ACE Team for a lack of ambition. Their previous titles’ massive scope and rampant, otherworldly weirdness demonstrated that in spades. So how do you follow that? Why, by jutting off in an entirely different direction, of course. Abyss Odyssey is a procedurally generated, Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros-inspired roguelike-like (but not quite) um… thing. ACE Team’s first set of words about it didn’t quite do it justice, which is why we’ve given them a couple thousand more to work with. Go below to get a better sense of how Abyss Odyssey will work, which utterly mad art style inspired this one (the grand ACE Team tradition), why they’re not doing Steam Early Access, and whether or not they think procedural generation will hurt their knack for insane world-building.

After The Zeno Clash: Abyss Odyssey

By Adam Smith on March 5th, 2014.

With Zeno Clash developers ACE Team at the helm, Abyss Odyssey will no doubt take place in quite an odd world, but it definitely won’t take place in Oddworld, even if the title does look a bit like Abe’s Oddysee. The newly announced game is a side-scroller like Oddworld’s first, but ACE Team are sticking to their principles by concentrating on creatures engaging in fisticuffs. Taking place in a randomised world, Abyss Odyssey is a beat ‘em up in which every enemy has a full moveset and enough artificial gumption to offer a challenge. This is demonstrated by means of a video showing a lady fighting a skeleton.
