Rock Beats Everything: Rock Of Ages

Atlus have released a trailer (below) for ACE Team’s bonkers rolling destruction puzzle game, Rock Of Ages, which demonstrates, via a tour of gaming history, why rock beats everything. We’d argue that shotgun trumps even that, but we don’t have a video to prove it.

Not Waiting Ages For Rock Of Ages

That's exactly the opposite of what my face looked like this morning

Rock of Ages is a game RPS has been terribly excited about for quite some time. Why? Well, because it’s about rolling a giant, apparently sentient and sadistic boulder through art, history and the history of art, with graphics by someone doing a very convincing Terry Gilliam impression. VIDEOGAMES!

Our desperate anticipation for this next game from the Zeno Clash madmen should soon be over – Rock of Ages lands in August. Well, August 31, which is basically September, but the important thing is it’s only ten weeks until I can fire a massive rock out of a cannon at the groin of Michelangelo’s David. Joystiq reckons it should cost between $10 and $15.

Rock Of Ages Rolls Over Art, Wizards

Ace dev team ACE Team have released a new trailer for their boulder-rolling history-of-art puzzle game, Rock Of Ages, and it shows the ball in action, doing funnies. Previously we saw power ups which embue your happy rolling rock with temporary powers, such as being tough, or being on fire, and there’s some of these here, too. If only life had temporary power ups beyond “mild stimulant drink” and “illegal nose treat”. I want to absorb a glowy thing and be able to double-jump.

The game should arrive this summer.

Super Clunky Ball: Rock Of Ages Videos

Imagine what this team's office must look like.

It really is about time we caught up on Rock Of Ages trailers, don’t you think. The next game from the mad geniuses behind Zeno Clash, ACE Team, is a combination of tower defence and Marble Madness, because that’s the way those people think. And there’s lots of bits of the Pythonesque madness to look at below, including a ten minute walkthrough of how it all works.

Smashing! Rock Of Ages Powerups Trailer

Beauty is in the eye of the boulder.

Now we’ve gotten to the bottom of why the boulder is smiling, we at RPS haven’t a single reservation about Rock of Ages. Just look at it! It is literally rock and roll. This is going to be an amazing game. And if you watch the following trailer, you’ll discover that even the powerups are going to be pretty good. We’ve got Iron Bands, Fireball, Wings and, uh, Petroleum.

Ace Team Talk Rock Of Ages

Ace Team, the Chilean studio behind the fantastically unusual first person beat ‘em up Zeno Clash, are now making a game that combines bowling with art history. It’s called Rock Of Ages, and it’s a game of two halves. One half is that of a boulder crashing around destroying stuff, the other is about defending things from that errant ball of rock. Sounds suitably strange, but what of the details? We talked to Ace Team’s Andres Bordeu to find out more.

Lost Marbles: Rock Of Ages

The next game from Zeno Clash creators Ace Team, which will be coming out on the PC as well as the TV fun extenders in early 2011, is Rock Of Ages. It looks delightfully batshit awesome, as you can see from the most recent trailer, which I’ve totally gone and embedded right below these words. Said trailer shows a selection of things that the rock will smash, as well as some of the special powers you can expect to use. It also reveals more of the fantastic art style from the game’s Renaissance period. (Intriguingly, each level has its own historical art style.) Go take a look. It’s not a bad way to start a week.

Ace!: Ace Team Announce Rock Of Ages

Also looking awesome this week: the next game from the Chilean team who gave us weirdo biff ‘em up Zeno Clash. It’s called Rock Of Ages and it appears to be a mixture of strategy game and, er, bowling? Two opposing castles attempt to crush each other in surrealistic rock-rolling warfare with defences constructed turn by turn to defend against the heinous stone attack. If that wasn’t enough, Ace Team explain: “your boulder will crash through different periods of classical art, introducing the player to a variety of authentic art styles and music from throughout much of human history.” Response from RPS Hivemind? “Oh Wow.” “VIDEOGAMES! VIDEOGAMES!” “Yay!” Yeah, that’s the stuff. It’s out next year via digi download outlets.

And you are going to want to watch this particular trailer…

Punch! Biff! Zeno Clash SDK Released

ACE Team have promised they’ll be releasing the SDK for Zeno Clash since release, and because they’re honest folk, now they have. The Source-based first-person thwacker is one of our favourite games of the year, and you’d have to be Earth’s Wrongest Idiot not to find the game’s world fascinating and beautiful. Now using the magic cogs and accompanying text files, you can create your own levels and mods for the game. That link will guide you toward the SDK itself, as well as all the accompanying documentation. If you make something excellent, make sure to let us know.

Punch! Kick! Zeno Clash 2!

More snouty beasts, please.

ACE Team have just announced the excellent news that they’re already working on a sequel to Zeno Clash, the first-person beat-em-up we poured praise upon last month. Zeno Clash 2, as it’s currently known, will take place after the events of the first game, continuing the adventures of Ghat, this time in a larger world, with mysterious “RPG elements”.
