The word from the rumbling innards of Steam is that a Zeno Clash demo is now available. The demo contains a slice of the single player campaign, and the first level of the challenge mode, so you’ll be able to sample both. Then, should you fancy, you can compare and contrast your impressions with our verdict.

We’ve been playing Zeno Clash. Developers Ace Team were kind enough to suggest that we should furnish you with the world’s first review of their insane beat ‘em up. Our razor-sharp analysis of defeating elephantmen and bludgeoning lunatics follows.
Jim: Right, our subject today is the esoteric fist ‘em up, Zeno Clash, by Chilean types, Ace Team.
Alec: I liked the bit where I repeatedly punched a bird-man in the face.
Jim: Bird-men are scum.
Kieron: Shall I do a brief fact-o-list of the game so we have the FACTS on the table?
Jim: Yes, facts, because facts are super-true.

ACE Team have released a Zeno Clash webcomic. Not sure if it’s ongoing – the last page suggests that it might be – but it gives us a touch more flavour of what to expect from the game. Zeno Clash is out in April, and we’ll hopefully bring you a startlingly witty and insight, perhaps even poignant, review of the game before then.

There’s a new video showing Zeno Clash, which I suspect is the best yet. ACE Team’s game has really caught the imagination of many, partly through its remarkable artistic style, and partly through the use of melee combat – people are really interested to find out if this could be the game to satisfyingly pull it off. (With a respectful nod to Dark Messiah, of course.) The new video begins with two of the trio of brothers at the helm of the game explaining the offensive and defensive nature of it all, and then cuts to some lovely in-game examples of the combat in action. It is, of course, below.

Zeno Clash is different. Which is refreshing. A melee-focused first-person game in the Source engine, in a world that doesn’t look like anything else around. Which isn’t a thing you get to say about many games. Nominated in the 2009 IGF Awards, the independent game from the start-up Chilean developer is rapidly gathering attention. We’ve had a preview of a few levels, and spoken to one of the founding members of the ACE Team, Edmundo Bordeu, which marvellously you’ll find below.

Zeno Clash looks strange. Good strange, possibly the best kind, but so very weird. Built using Source, it’s an extremely hands-on FPS, with plenty of gruesome melee punching. There’s a new trailer showing this off, below, along with some interesting character art developers ACE sent our way.

It’s at times like this you want to manufacture a rivalry. Claim there’s some battle for the heart of the left-of-centre first-person game between the Chilean Champion Zeno Clash and the Russian Rumbler Tension. But that’d be terribly irresponsible. We’ll make do with noting that the Source-powered game have provided four new images showing off its warped fantasy vision of enormous nostrilled beasts and couples lying around in bed. More grabs beneath the cut.
