You Little Wonder: Age Of Wonders III – Golden Realms

By Adam Smith on August 25th, 2014.

Age of Wonders III! I liked it well enough and keep meaning to play some more and, as is increasingly the case, an expansion may be precisely the excuse I need to do just that. Golden Realms, which is due on September 18th, is a meaty great wedge of new content, spearheaded by the inclusion of tiny little halflings. I’m not one for campaigns when random maps are available for conquering, so it’s pleasing to note that all of the new features have been integrated into the upgraded map generator. Rather than releasing a short CGI film about a halfling rogue to announce the expansion, Triumph have delivered seventeen minutes of developer walkthrough explaining everything that’s new. That’s below.

Makes You Wonder: Age Of Wonders 3 Level Editor Out

By Graham Smith on April 7th, 2014.

It looks easy to make something pretty.

I stepped out last week to conquer distant lands and it looks like no one at RPS posted about the Age of Wonders 3 level editor in my absence. I guess they must not be cool people, or they’d realise there’s nothing better in life than robustly featured editors for creating your own new lands to conquer. Especially for a game in which Adam enjoyed himself but craved more variety. There’s a video demonstration of the editor in action below.

Wot I Think: Age Of Wonders III

By Adam Smith on March 26th, 2014.

It’s only been a month and a half since I wrote my mega-preview of Age Of Wonders III and spending around fifteen hours with a review copy of the game hasn’t done a great deal to change my mind about its many merits. It hasn’t extended its tendrils to tickle any deeper fancies either, although I’ll concede that the world is a little weirder and more wonderful than my initial expeditions suggested. I’ve spent many hours with the long-awaited strategy sequel and here’s wot I think.

The Deity Today: Age Of Wonders III

By Adam Smith on March 18th, 2014.

Beyond the pomp and circumstance, I always felt that theocrats were essentially bureaucrats with bigger hats. And I guess the hats are part of either the pomp or the circumstance anyhow – a Stovepipe of Circumstance +4 or a Zucchetto of Pomp +2. Nineteen minutes of Age of Wonders III footage introduces another kind of theocrat, one with honest-to-badness divine powers and inquisitorial tendencies. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the revived strategy game but spent my time in the soft-soled boots of a rogue rather than the hard-souled vestments of a theocrat. The video is in the form of a developer-led let’s play, showing a late-game battle involving an Eldritch Horror.

Hands-On: Age Of Wonders III

By Adam Smith on February 12th, 2014.

The wait for Age Of Wonders III would have been far more painful if I’d been anticipating a return to the series since the release of the most recent game in 2003. I’d assumed Triumph were otherwise engaged though, following the release of the Overlord games and a period of silence. Last year we discovered that the Dutch developers were returning to the wonders that they knew so well, with a strategic turn-based sequel to the superb Shadow Magic and I’ve been playing a preview build for several days now. Here’s wot I’ve learned.

Rogue Footage Of Age Of Wonders III

By Craig Pearson on January 23rd, 2014.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION
Actually, that should be “Footage Of Age Wonders III‘s Rogue Leader”. I was trying to be cool, and now I’ve backed myself into a corner. Help me out by shaking your monitor around as you watch this short trailer for the fantasy strategy game’s Rogue class. It will make it appear as if the footage was roguishly taken.

Underground, Overground: Age Of Wonders III Footage

By Craig Pearson on August 23rd, 2013.

BIG spider!
If you found the recent announcement of a delay to glorious fantasy strat-fest Age Of Wonders III a bit chafing, then I have a soothing salve for you. Accepting that the release is sometime in 2014 will sting a fair bit, but it’ll be just a little bit easier to bear after watching the 11 minutes of footage we have. It takes us from the sulphurous underground lair of Dreadnought Gustav Gorsmorg, to the lovely clean top soil where I want to live. Fighting all the way, of course. He is a Dwarf.

Delaying The Age Of Wonders (3)

By Adam Smith on July 19th, 2013.

The Age of Wonders will dawn but we must wait until 2014. That suggests that this year is the Age of Mundanity, or perhaps even the Age of Blunders because I am incapable of resisting such a simple and satisfying rhyme. Eurogamer espied a forum post detailing the reasons for the delay:

We’ve made great progress developing the game and feel now is the time to give you heads up that we will take a bit more time creating all the features and content. Age of Wonders 3 is the largest game in the series and with the additional polish we hope we can give you an even better experience.

‘Features and content’ are important. Best to finish most of that before release.

Wonderbaarlijk: Age Of Wonders III First Footage

By Alec Meer on March 27th, 2013.

In one tab I had the Battlefield 4 video, all ratatatat and shouting mens. In the other I had the Age of Wonders III video, all synthy music and dreamlike cloud formations. “A new era in entertainment” versus a sequel to a turn-based strategy/RPG hybrid? It was no contest at all.

Money Blocks: Notch Funding Age Of Wonders III

By Jim Rossignol on February 13th, 2013.

The news funnel at Eurogamer has become all clogged up with the surprise news that Minecraft-enrichened indie dev Notch is the mysterious benefactor behind Age Of Wonders III. Lennart Sas, managing director of developers Triumph (who previously made Overlord) told EG: “We noticed Minecraft’s random title-screen blurb mentioned Age of Wonders, so I thought what the heck and I sent Notch an email.”

This, as it turns out, was a wise move, as Notch is a big fan of the old myth ‘em up. Despite publisher interest, Triumph decided to let Mr Notch put his Minecraft dollars in because he didn’t push for the same harsh terms as a traditional game company: “He’s a fan of the game and didn’t insist on owning it like many of the publishers do these days when they fund development,” explained Sas. The game is now due in the autumn, and it looks pretty good, as you can see from the announcement trailer, below.

Age Of Wonders III/3/three/iii/³ Announced

By John Walker on February 6th, 2013.

There is to be an Age Of Wonders III. Or 3. The press release calls it both. I shan’t commit until I see a box cover. The Dutch devs, flush on the success of Overlord 2, have announced their next project… hang on – didn’t Overlord 2 come out four years ago? What have you been doing for four years, Triumph?! Making Age Of Wonders iii it seems, 11 years after the last one.
