Together Alone In The Dark

By Alec Meer on November 4th, 2014.

Whoever’s currently wearing the withered Atari skinsuit plans to release a new Alone In The Dark game before year’s end, and whether the fact they’re only putting out the first trailer now is a sign of confidence or otherwise is for looser tongues than mine to speculate about. I’m too preoccupied with the distinct absence of alone time in Alone In the Dark: Illumination, given it’s a four player co-op monster shooter. I guess Together In The Dark sounded too spicy? I’d have gone for Foursome In The Dark myself.

Other naming crimes include that Illumination is being developed by a studio named Pure FPS. I can clearly see the player characters’ shoulders, so that’s a damned dirty lie.

Atari Are All Alone In The Dark Haunted House

By John Walker on September 1st, 2014.

Perhaps Atari is being meta. That’s my theory. Two old, undesirable game series returning, both about things that should be dead coming back to life. Again. It’s awfully clever.

So it is that we have yet another attempt to revive the never-good Alone In The Dark, and the Atari 2600 cartridge game, Haunted House. Both now have their first trailers, below. Neither seeming to have much to do with Atari’s recent declaration that it was to focus on the extraordinarily specific choice of making “LGBT and social casino” games.

Paradise Lost: Test Drive, V-Rally Dev Eden Shut Down

By Nathan Grayson on April 13th, 2013.

Truth be told, things at Test Drive Unlimited, V-Rally, and Alone in the Dark developer Eden Games haven’t been going particularly well for quite some time. The sorry saga began with a gigantic round of layoffs and a nice, breezy Sunday afternoon strike in the park, and now – two years later – the final nail’s been hammered into the coffin. Atari, as it turns out, quietly boarded up Eden’s doors back in March, ending a fairly loud, messy state of affairs with barely a peep.

Alone In The Dark: “Cinematic” Trailer

By John Walker on May 12th, 2008.

Take that, leaves!

What’s described as a cinematic trailer for Alone In The Dark has appeared, and will appear again below the jump.

I think I’d like games to be a bit more distinct when selling themselves via trailers, beyond emulating the visual styles of film trailers. In order for game trailers to look like film trailers, they need to be about 90% cutscene, 9% logos, and around 1% in-game footage. Which is a bit of a waste of everyone’s time, since, well, it’s not a film. (And really, the last thing you want to do is associate yourself with anyone’s memories of Boll’s Alone In The Dark film. If I were Atari I’d have the trailer be 90% explaining that it’s nothing to do with that movie).

Alone In The Streaming Video Bonanza

By Jim Rossignol on April 21st, 2008.

We have to thank GameTrailers for taking the bandwidth hit in five (count ‘em?) Alone In The Dark Videos. I’ve posted them all here for your pleasure. The question is: can it really be said to compare to series zenith, Alone In The Dark 2?

EDIT: Looks like the movies got purged for some reason. Boo.

1. Thanks!

Alone In The Dark: Chairs On Fire

By John Walker on March 15th, 2008.

A new video for Alone In The D/Park has appeared, and it nicely shows off all those gimmicks that will hopefully make it something special. Setting fire to chairs is pretty much what I look for in gaming, so it’s off to a good start. Flipping crikey, Atari must be hoping this is good.

In our darkest hours, we know you’re there for us, Gametrailers.

Man vs Chair

By Alec Meer on January 23rd, 2008.

That's what you get for being made out of pine, asshole

The new Alone in the Dark game was announced a couple of years back now, and it’s remained something of a mystery since – it’s managed to carry almost the same air of quiet potential that Alan Wake has, in fact. With it creeping towards release at last though, here’s an (ugh) ‘gameplay’ trailer, which gets across some of the intended atmosphere, but still doesn’t give much away.

Bizarrely, it largely consists of a man attacking furniture with a variety of weaponry, seemingly without provocation. Perhaps the chairs are possessed by sinister otherwordly forces. “Alone in the Dark 5: Dawn of the Demon-o-Tables.” Or “Alone With the Bark”, perhaps. Whatever the true purpose of this wanton domestic destruction, it certainly demonstrates an impressive degree of environmental interaction. There’s also a fair bit of pyromania, and some glimpses of various spooky beasties towards the end of the video, but no clear sense of whether this reimagining of the classic action-adventure is primarily shooty fun, Tomb Raidersome puzzle-solving, a mess of quick-time events, or just one long anti-Ikea tirade.

Witness returning AITD hero Edward Carnaby in the midst of wood-rage after the jump.
