Oi, Diablo: Torchlight II Beta Stress Test This Weekend

If you don’t have a muscular clicking finger a lot of the discussion around these parts may be a little disheartening as of late. It’s all Diablo this and Grim Dawn that, and maybe Exile the other. How about a bit of Torchlight II to go with all that, or as an alternative to Blizzard’s biff ‘em up? If you haven’t already had a chance to play the Tochlight beta, this weekend could be your lucky two days. Runic have announced that this will be their final stress test: “We’ll be sending out many more beta codes to those who have already made their Runic Games Account. Haven’t signed up yet? Go for it now! Creating your account is always your best chance to receive a beta invite – especially this weekend.”

The Sun Has Got His Moneyhat On: Grim Dawn Funded

Forget the rest of the loot-gathering crowd for a moment and concentrate your senses on the other ARPG. The one that isn’t a sequel but does see much-loved developers working in a genre where they have excelled in the past, the one with non-linear story progression and different factions to side with. Yes, it’s this one, Grim Dawn from the designers of Titan Quest. Although well into development, the game recently surfaced on Kickstarter and I explained the reasoning behind that move. Now, with 10 days to go, the target has been reached.

Shadows Fall On The Path Of Exile

From stabby with slight magic, to slight magic with unusual rib harness, through extreme magic and bat-wing chest paint, to the final look of stabby with unusual rib harness.

There’s no reason in the world that anyone reading this would know how much I love dual wielding but let it be known that I’ve just finished eating a bowl of cereal, a spoon in each hand, and immediately afterwards I gripped brushes akimbo as I cleansed my mouth-rocks. Last night was mostly about dual wielding as well, as I prepared myself to share some details about Path of Exile’s soon-to-be just-this-moment revealed sixth class, the Shadow. With the instrument-laden, blood-stained appearance of a man keen on the unanaesthetised study of other fellows’ entrails, he’s often seen surrounded by maiming traps, a metal claw on each hand, although more often he isn’t seen at all.

Realms Of Ancient War Is An ARPG, And That’s Okay

Sure, it looks like everything else. But everything else is great!

REALMS OF ANCIENT WAR! It’s a title that should be shouted, I believe. It’s also a title that needs some tidying up, since we’re apparently supposed to call it “R.A.W. – Realms of Ancient War“. No. No I absolutely won’t do that. Your title doesn’t get to be an acronym and the expansion of that acronym. That’s not how titles work. And you certainly don’t get all those full stops and then a hyphen. Goodness me, no. Your game is now called Realms Of Ancient War, and it’s to be shouted. It is decided. Please redesign your website/game materials. Thank you. Oh, and also your game looks super-pretty.

Here Comes The Sun: Grim Dawn Kickstarter

I wasn’t sure what the polite level of enthusiasm for action-RPG Grim Dawn was but as it turns out it’s perfectly acceptable to perform a small dance while saying “it appears to combine the best of the developers previous game, Titan Quest, with a pleasingly unpleasant new world to discover and factions with which to side and war”. Alternatively, just holler wildly and punch the air whenever it’s mentioned. John spoke with Crate Entertainment and they explained much but now, after two years in development, the game requires a swift kick up its grim awning to help it along the way. Yes, gentlepeople, to Kickstarter once more.

Loot Drop: Path Of Exile Beta Open All Weekend

We all love a good get together
In the weekend family get-together of the fantasy RPGs, Uncle Diablo is hanging around, talking to his niece Torchlight about her new tattoos. She’s just asked where Path Of Exile is. “He’s suffering from stress and couldn’t make it”, said Uncy D. Abstractly, of course: what’s actually happening is that Path of Exile, Grinding Gears’ isometric online action-RPG is actually holding a stress test this weekend, from Friday to Sunday, and everyone’s invited. Now the closed beta members might be a bit sniffy at the sudden influx of unlevelled scum, but if you just follow these simple rules we’ll all get along famously: left mouse for hitting; right mouse for also hitting. Extra Rations: The Baconing DLC And Sale

The Baconing was a load of old nonsense, which suits me just fine. I like nonsense. The first time I realised words were among my favourite things I was but a young pup reading a giant Edward Lear tome and being struck about the face by seemingly infinite invention. But Edward Lear never included any “Bad Mothas” in his work as far as I remember and The Baconing is adding one such lady by the name of Roesha as a downloadable co-op character. To the patchwork pig-flesh stew that is Deathspank’s world, Roesha brings a dose of ’70s disco blaxploitation, with a glitterball special attack and, I quote, “a nasty attitude”. To celebrate her arrival, the game and the DLC are available at a 50% discount through Steam until Wednesday the 18th. Mr Caldwell found much to like. Perhaps you will too?

Impressions: Path Of Exile Beta

The entire internet has filled up with discussions, videos and arguments about the Diablo III beta this week. Just to even things out, I’m reserving this little corner to talk about a different line of hacking and looting RPG though. Path of Exile, which will be free to play at launch, is also in a playable beta state at the moment and I’ve been walking its desolate beaches with naught but driftwood to protect me. I’ve brought back thoughts.

Playing For Keeps: Dungeon Defenders

Are dungeons more worthy of defending than towers?

Diablo 3 wasn’t quite as shiny and pony-strewn as some people were expecting, so it’s making this place seem a little grim and gothic at the moment. Time for something incredibly colourful and chaotic. So here are two developer diaries for upcoming 4 player co-op tower defence action RPG Dungeon Defenders. Not my description, but the description of developers Trendy Entertainment. There’s a LOT going on in these videos, the first one in particular, and I’m not sure I caught everything first time through. I did get a Torchlight meets Magicka vibe, although without the sadistic unfortunate friendly fire of Magicka and with an added build phase. Take a look.

On The Beta Track: Path Of Exile

We last wrote about online-only, free-to-play ARPG Path of Exile in April and it was already looking like an interesting proposition. It’s in closed beta now and there’s a terribly agonising countdown clock on the website to inform the world of when another lucky player will be allowed in. It’s like a cruel competition that I never win. Has anyone had any luck and if so can you bring back any reports from the entirely lootable dark and gritty world (that’s the official description) in which you have found yourself? There’s several feature length films worth of beta footage after the jump as well as a trailer for the Templar class.

Texas Stranger: The Real Texas

Titanic Quest: Crate Speak About Grim Dawn

Hurry up with the alpha, for goodness sakes!

Crate Entertainment, an indie development studio born out of the ashes of Titan Quest creators Iron Lore, have been working on their first major project for a while now. Grim Dawn, built using the tech behind Titan Quest, will hopefully be entering alpha at some point this year, and it’s a game we’re extremely excited to see. So we caught up with Crate’s core man, Arthur Bruno, to learn more. In a wonderful interview he tells us about the fall of Iron Lore, and the birth of Crate, explains where Titan Quest fell short, and how Grim Dawn is not attempting to appeal to casual players. In fact, it’s going to be actively hostile toward them. And he introduces us to the concept of rainbow farting machines.
