Warbeaver Rides Again: Tera Going F2P

By Nathan Grayson on January 10th, 2013.

I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE A HUG.

I actually played a decent amount of Tera when it first launched, and I really enjoyed certain aspects. The sublimely timing-based hack ‘n’ slashery was to die for, and the war beavers easily ranked among gaming’s best. But goodness, those quests were a deal-breaker. When lumbering Big Ass Monsters weren’t involved, they epitomized MMO monotony. Go here, kill ten of these, go here, kill ten of another incredibly similar thing, THIS IS WHAT BEING A HERO FEELS LIKE YEAH. Point is, Tera’s best taken in small doses, but a looming subscription fee always made that a pretty bitter pill to swallow. So now’s the part where I conveniently tell you about that fee’s impending demise while also notifying you of promising promises like this one: “Tera will be free. No level, time, or content restrictions.”

It’s A Smaller World, After All: Tera Merging Servers

By Nathan Grayson on September 5th, 2012.

Maybe we should stop our fighting. I think... I think we're the only ones left.

In the grand scheme of MMOs, Tera actually has quite a lot going for it. The combat’s brisk, high-flying, and surprisingly tense, there’s a fairly ambitious political machine chugging along in the background, and its selection of beaver/badger/cat/dog/catdog people is second-to-none. Unfortunately, the glue that holds it all together – a bog-standard kill/collect quest grind – isn’t so hot, and unsurprisingly, players noticed. So Tera’s world of Big-Ass Monsters and regular-size-ass everything else is getting quite a bit smaller.

Large And In Charge (Of Lasers): Tera’s Argon Queen

By Nathan Grayson on July 28th, 2012.

We strike you down, evil queen, because you stand for subjugation, treachery, and being really fucking creepy-looking.

As an American born and raised, I naturally fear two things: monarchy and giants. Watching the trailer for Tera’s next big update, then, was quite an emotional journey for me, because it featured both in one larger-than-life, laser-firing package. Sorry, god, this queen doesn’t need saving. But she’ll totally beat you up. And your dad, too, if you don’t watch it. If, however, the very sight of that thing makes the boiling warrior blood drain from your veins as quickly as it does mine, there’s also the long-awaited introduction of PVP battlegrounds, some new skills, and raid content. Jump beyond our True Action Break for a rather impressive-looking trailer.

NCsoft Seek To Prevent US Release Of TERA

By John Walker on January 26th, 2012.

Those are the most disturbing gaming boobies I've seen in a while.

Why can’t we all just learn to get along? With MMO TERA finally having a release date set for May this year, and the pre-release hype building up, NCsoft have leapt in and thrown a court at the proceedings. As MMO Culture reports, a dispute over the ownership of software and artwork means that the release could be scuppered as it sinks in the mire of a legal bog. I’ve taken a look at the legal filing, and explained the details of the claims.
