MASSIVE CHALICE: Moderate Impressions

MASSIVE CHALICE (their capitals, not mine) is a Kickstarted strategy-roleplaying game from Psychnoauts, Costume Quest and Broken Age dev Double Fine. (Yes, they do seem to be chucking out a game every other week right now, and not without casualties.) Set in a fantasy kingdom besieged by demonic forces, you must raise and then control a defensive army, ideally sourced from the offspring of your best fighters. I’ve spent some time with the ‘premium backer beta.’

Wot I Think: Costume Quest 2

Hi there!

Costume Quest 2 is a roleplaying and puzzle game from Psychonauts and Broken Age studio Double Fine. It’s about kids’ Halloween costumes actually transforming them, and thus enabling them to battle time-travelling dentists and candy-snatching aliens, in a fight to save the future from sugar-phobic tyranny. It’s out now.

“Is that a children’s game?” she asked in confusion.

“Uh. Not.. really,” I spluttered in embarrassment. “Sort of. It’s kind of…for everyone.”

Why didn’t I just say “yeah, but so what?”

Steam Who? – Humble Bundle’s Spring Sale

Is there going to be a spring Steam sale? Or has Valve finally elected to give its wearied money counters – their abacuses gnarled and gnawed on, fear and desperation write large on waxen wood – a brief respite? I’m not entirely sure it matters now, though, as Humble has elected to fire the first shot with a sale of its own, and it’s off to a damn impressive start. Check it out for deep discounts on games like South Park: The Stick of Truth, Batman: Arkham Origins, Broken Age, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, and Thief. Tons more below.

Earworm: Game Music Bundle 7 Offers 5 Soundtracks For $1

A side benefit to videogame bundles: they offer the opportunity to write about games that would otherwise go unmentioned on a PC-only site. Take Game Music Bundle 7, for example. For $1, it gives you the soundtracks to The Banner Saga, Broken Age, Luftrausers, The Floor Is Jelly and Device 6. Which is four PC games and therefore ample excuse to mention that the mobile-only Device 6 is a puzzle game with some of my favourite videogame music ever. I mean, listen to this.

Or maybe you don’t care about the advantages the bundle offers me, the lowly internet writer, and instead want to know that if you pay a further $9 (for a total of $10, fact fans), you’ll also net the soundtracks to The Yawhg, Starbound, Escape Goat 2, Eldritch, Tribes: Ascend, Ether and my fingers are getting tired so I’ll just say nine others for a total of 20.

Double Fine’s Unused ‘Bad Golf 2′ Idea Being Made By Fans

Perhaps Bad Golf 2 will prove to be the One Direction of Double Fine’s latest Amnesia Fortnight prototype-off. Not selected as a winning project in the X-Factorish voting, it seemed destined to never become a reality – until fans decided to make it anyway. And now it’s generating more headlines than any of the ‘official’ picks did.

Fortunately, Double Fine have given it their blessing. I.e. they haven’t sent a pack of lawyers after it.

Broken Age Act II Already Funded, Claims Double Fine

Once upon a time in Prior Age 2013, you might remember that Tim Schafer garnered some Internet scorn by confessing that Broken Age had broken Double Fine’s bank. This despite a Kickstarter so successful that it kickstarted the notion of using Kickstarter for games (Kickstarter). But then Schafer and co, those clever jesters, they hatched a scheme: break the game into two parts (WORDPLAY) and then use the first to fund the second. So, did it work? It’s a multilayered question, a ┬ánigh-ineffable series of concepts, a seemingly simple binary that explodes into mind-boggling complexity, and the answer is yes.

The RPS Verdict: Double Fine’s Broken Age, Act 1

From the distant, waterlogged land of Bath Spa, John Walker sits at a keyboard and dreams of another world. A world by the sea. A world where 95% of its male population are bearded and wear Converse. Untold distances away, in said sea-neighbouring world of Brighton, Alec Meer also sits at a keyboard and imagines a tourist-besieged town made up of yellow buildings and fading magazine publishers.

Somehow, the two writers’ minds reach each other across the gulf of space and time. And they have something they must discuss: Double Fine’s Kickstarted revivalist adventure game, Broken Age, whose first ‘Act’ was released last week. They talk of its two lead characters, they talk of its unfinished nature, they talk of its puzzles, they talk of what they wanted but what they got, they talk of shrunken heads and peaches.

Broken Age Comes Out Today: Are You Going To Buy It?

Today is likely to be one of the most interesting days for Kickstarter watchers. Broken Age, the adventure game that made the crowdfunding format a gaming household name, is out on sale today. Right now, in fact. So the question that’s left to be answered is: how many people are there who are interested in buying it, who weren’t interested in funding it?

A Game And A Chat Ep 1: Tim Schafer

And now for something completely different. Or, well, actually kinda similar to other stuff you might have seen before, but in video form and on RPS. A Game And A Chat (tentative title, probably) is a weekly live show in which I play a game with a developer and, you know, chat with them. At the same time. I am nothing if not multi-talented. Sometimes the game will be all shiny and new, other times it’ll be aged, haggard, and only tangentially relevant. Who knows? Maybe one day it’ll be a boardgame. Or tag. Or cage-fighting. This first episode, however, is fairly straightforward. Given that Broken Age is about to land in the click-hungry hands of the masses, I thought I’d bring Tim Schafer into the studio. By which I mean my bedroom. Via, er, a webcam. But not like that. Oh jeez just click past the break and watch us discuss Serious Topics while being accused of murder by trees or something. We’re kicking off at 11:00 AM PT/7:00 PM GMT*.

Update: We’re done! The full video is posted below.

Wot I Think: Broken Age

Having so recently written about the first hour of Broken Age, it doesn’t make too much sense to overly repeat myself here. So it’s well worth reading that first half of this review first. This one continues on from there. So here’s the rest of wot i think:
