Ready Steady Splat: Carmageddon Leaves Early Access

I have a soft spot for Carmageddon and I fear that the Kickstarted Reincarnation [official site] is going to steamroll over that soft spot and turn it into a gloopy red mess at the side of the road. After a prolonged stint as an Early Access title, Stainless Games’ rebooted Deathracer launched yesterday. I’ve only played briefly – although I spent a few hours with earlier versions – and while I’m not hindered by the performance issues that continue to affect many, Reincarnation hasn’t reignited my love for the series. Maybe my tastes have changed since my teenage years and maybe Carmageddon hasn’t changed enough.

Revving Up: Carmageddon Gets Last Early Access Update

Carmageddon: Reincarnation [official website] is very nearly out of Early Access Beta, which means you can start feverishly throwing together Finish Line puns while I grit my teeth.

The game’s last ever Early Access update is now out, which stabilises a few known issues, game crashes included, and sets a new maximum count of six cars in multiplayer.

MOT Failure – Carmageddon: Reincarnation Delayed

When midnight sirens lead to blue flash road mash, stretchers, covered heads, and slippy red maca- wait, wait, I’ll have to rip off Jam another time. Carmageddon: Reincarnation [official site] was due to wrap up its stretch on Steam Early Access next week and join the glorious ranks of finished games, but it isn’t. Finished or coming out next week, that is. Both.

Developers Stainless Games have announced that they’re pushing the release date back by one month, from April 23rd to May 21st. They need a little more time, they say. Well, you wouldn’t want to launch an unfinished game out of Early Access, would you? I suspect it’s probably also sensible to duck out the way of the redonculously popular new kid on the car murder scene, GTA V.

Splat-o! Carmageddon: Reincarnation Adds Multiplayer

As Carmageddon: Reincarnation [official site] continues to smash, bash, dash, crash, and splash its way through Early Access, it’s now reached a point where I’m starting to think about picking it up. Developers Stainless Games today launched the death racer’s first beta version, meaning it’s now the whole game with all its modes, cars, and levels, just a little unpolished. Yes, this does include multiplayer. Murdering your pals seems a fair enough way to spend Valentine’s Day.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation Alpha Update Crosses The Line

Nab him jab him tab him grab him

One curious effect of vintage series rebooting and reviving as ‘Early Access’ releases is that they don’t make much of an impact. They meekly shuffle into the room wearing a taupe cardigan rather than down kicking the door in a leather jacket, carrying a six-pack in one hand and a boombox in the other, screaming “Let’s do this you mothers!” Unfinished as they are, they mostly attract old fans rather than making new ones. And will this slow exposure stop them from making that splash when they do properly launch?

Anyway, in the meantime, work continues. Carmageddon: Reincarnation yesterday launched its second big Early Access update, bringing a new level, three new cars, more performance options, and other doodads.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation Ploughs Into Early Access

Meat is murder

While many retro revival Kickstarters dreamed of bring back old genres or broader old design philosophies, Stainless Games had a far more modest goal: mowing down pedestrians in several tons of murdercar. Two years later, it’s sort-of come true. Carmageddon: Reincarnation has now hit Steam Early Access at £19.99, giving an early taste of the vintage deathracer series’ thrills, chills, and bovine kills.

And hey, as it’s Saturday afternoon, why not ring in both the launch and settle into the weekend by watching a cute little Carmageddon cartoon? You’ll learn so much about friendship and viscera. Read the rest of this entry »

Crowdageddon: Carma Reincarnation Cashes In

Note: this is not grafficks

Carmageddon Reincarnation has been successfully funded! Which could have been a headline over a year ago, as the bally project was happening anyway, but having just reached its Kickstarter goal that means it’s double-funded. Stainless’ driving and murder simulator currently sits on top of a $425,000 cash-throne with nine days left on the Kick-clock.

I’d be very surprised if it didn’t reach half a mill before closing, and if there wasn’t some sort of concerted push (new rewards etc) to make that happen. They’ve already claimed Mac and Linux versions will be on the cards if $600,000 is dinged. So, yeah. Hopefully this hugely increases the odds of Reincarnation being a great Carmageddon game rather than merely an adequate one. Well done, chaps, and best of luck. We’ll see you at Rezzed.

Below: lots of developers saying thank you, and some com-ed-dee outtakes from their initial KS pitch vid.

Carmandgeddem: Stainless Talk Kickstarter At Rezzed

Remember, remember the 6th of Julember. For that is the date that the two-day Rezzed game show, orchestrated by Eurogamer with lots of help from the nerds at Rock, Paper, Shotgun, kicks off in my current home town of Brighton, UK. It’s also my girlfriend’s birthday, which means I won’t be at the show until Saturday July 7th. And that I will very sadly miss the most recently-announced session, Stainless Games talking about how they’re bringing back Carmageddon with the forthcoming Reincarnation, and how/why they’re using Kickstarter to do it. A public chat about crowdsourced game funding only makes sense in these rapid-fire Kickstarted times.

Kickstarter Katchup

All of the money.

This makes sense as a thing to do. With so many gaming Kickstarters running, for games we’re genuinely interested to play, let’s have a look to see where they all are this weekend. The headline news is that Grim Dawn has finished its run, with just shy of double its target reached. Below you can catch up on Moebius, Xenonauts, Tex Murphy, and many more. And you can also note that almost all of them aren’t pledging to Kick It Forward, which completely sucks, so you should get in touch with them all and yell at them.

Carmageddon’s Crowdsourced ReReincarnation

One of the tiers is called 'state of the fart'. Hmm. Hmm.

Hmm. I was under the impression that Stainless’ forthcoming Carmageddon reboot was in a safe place already in terms of funding, but nonetheless they’ve added their game of pedestrian slaughter and hyper-aggressive future-racing to the infinite ranks of Kickstarted development. The internet’s been enormously happy about the news today, which puzzles me slightly as it’s not like the game wasn’t going to happen without crowdsourcing.

So, yeah. Carmageddon Reincarnation is happening. Again. And this time you can pay for it before rather than after development is completed! It’s up to $40k of its desired $400,000 at the time of writing, though $10k of that comes from just one backer who’ll be flown to the UK and have their likeness applied to an in-game character. $10k! Christ. Mere mortals, meanwhile, will receive a copy of the game for pledges starting at $15. And, y’know, other rewards for larger payments. Don’t make me explain this again.
