Carrier Command Release Date-Ish, Plus Pics

By Craig Pearson on January 25th, 2012.

Load the release cannon and fire vaguely in that direction!

Hello! I bring good news. The release date aiming cone for Bohemia Interactive’s sci-fi action strategy game Carrier Command: Gaea Mission has narrowed. The bad news is it’s only as specific as Q2 2012. Now I’ve been doing this job since 2000, and not once have I ever looked up what release date quarters mean. This chart did not help. So instead of explaining it further, I’ll have to distract you with some new screenshots of the game below.

Exclusive Hands On With Carrier Command

By Jim Rossignol on June 14th, 2011.

There are some remakes which are baffling, and others which are ultimately pointless – when they they share little more than a name with the original game, for example – but there are others still which were crying out to happen, and make perfect sense when they arrive. Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is one of these. The original was an extraordinary piece of game design, straddling strategy and vehicular combat in the crude 3D of its day, and managing to create an open-ended sandbox experience early on in the history of gaming. It now looks all the more impressive for having been released in 1988. While it has had a couple of notable imitators such as the Battlezones and Hostile Waters, it’s perhaps surprising that no one has tried to remake the original until now. What is most extraordinary (and unsettling) about this remake is just how faithful a game made over twenty years later has managed to be.

Bohemia On Carrier Command, Arma III

By Jim Rossignol on June 13th, 2011.

Last week I had a chance to talk to the Bohemia Interactive bossman, Marek Spanel. As one of the brains behind the original Operation Flashpoint, and then the three Arma games that followed, he is one PC gaming’s most ambitious developers. He’s now embarking on a huge project of developing three games across three studios at the same time: Arma 3, Take On Helicopters, and Carrier Command. I had a chance to talk to him about this bold undertaking.

Blimey: Carrier Command, The E3 Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on June 9th, 2011.

But yes!
Carrier Command is being remade by Bohemia Interactive. I know! I’ve even been playing it, and I’ll be putting up a hands-on preview, as well as interview with BIS boss Marek Spanel, on Monday. In the meantime you can take a look at the trailer they’ve released for the E3 reveal of the game. It’s an all-new engine, not the Arma 2 engine, as we’d previously thought, and it’s really not much like BIS’ other games. Intriguing indeed! More on that next week.

Pics And Words: Carrier Command

By Jim Rossignol on December 24th, 2009.

This doesn’t seem to be reported anywhere else on the web, so here’s a quick update for reborn ’80s classic Carrier Command. I’ve posted new release and screens below. It’s looking very interesting indeed.

First Images: Carrier Command

By Jim Rossignol on September 14th, 2009.

So Bohemia Interactive’s other announced project – in conjunction with Black Element – is Carrier Command. The long overdue remake of the aged sci-fi classic uses some of the same tech as Arma 2, and you can see some of the influences in these first in-game screens. No action to speak of, just environments and a few glimpses of your future-vehicles, but it’s definitely got the right vibe for a Carrier Command game. Hard, gritty sf, huge, expansively vehicular. Awesome. Oh god this could be so good/bugged. Go take a look. (Thanks to James for the info.)

Carrier Command Teaser

By Kieron Gillen on October 18th, 2008.

So where's the Carrier then?
Another one I caught off on forums, and it appears that everyone’s late to it. While we mentioned the game’s announcement, we completely failed to notice that the website had launched back in August and there’s been a teaser on Youtube since around then too. Anyway – Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is due in 2010, comes from Bohemia Interactive and Black Element Software and is being teased like so…

Carrier Command: Gaea Mission

By Jim Rossignol on August 14th, 2008.

Vehicular-mothership game Carrier Command was tungsten-plated awesome. So it’s splendid that a new Carrier Command game is in the proverbial pipeline. It’s being overseen by none other than Bohemia “ArmA” Interactive in conjunction developers Black Element Software [They made Shade: Wrath of Angels? Hmm]. It’s to be based on the original 1988 Carrier Command and is set in the Gaea Universe, in which human awfulness causes war and stuff.

Gritty sci-fi ahoy! Full release below the jump.

Making Of: Hostile Waters

By Kieron Gillen on December 7th, 2007.

[Another brilliant game which should have been massive - I recall describing it as the first great game of the new millennium, which will annoy anyone who's anal over that Popular Millennium thing. In it I interview Julian Widdows, who I - when writing this - realise I haven't seen for years. Where are you, Julian Widdows? Also, reading it reminds me of one great videogame lost artifact - the Multiplayer Patch for Hostile Waters, which was finished but never released. For God's sake, someone - do the right thing and leak the bastard.]

Rage's games were all big on explosions. We miss them so.

Sometimes a game’s easy to sum up. For example… Hostile Waters: Lost Classic. There was a time, however that Hostile Waters was captured in a different way. That is, “Carrier Command for a New Millennia”, for that’s what it was. The idea of taking the ancient 80s classic, and riffing furiously off it was Rage’s Dave Percival and Andy Williams, but it was never turned out to be that simple or direct a tribute.
