Cat Life: ChatChat

By Alec Meer on January 30th, 2012.

Long-term readers will guess which one's me all too easily

Instructions: “be a cat.” This is all you need to know about VVVVVV creator Terry Cavanagh’s free and cannily-named mini-MMO, ChatChat. Go on, be a cat. Do what cats do (bum-licking not included, mercifully). Hang around with other cats in the way that cats do, i.e. doing your best to ignore them with barely-concealed hostility. Catch mice. Leave dead mice as gruesome offerings to your owner. Be completely unmoved by the discovery of treasure, because if treasure doesn’t run away, scream and bleed, what possible use is it to you?

Time, Space, Fluff: Quantum Conundrum

By Adam Smith on January 26th, 2012.

Lasers, boxes, buttons. SCIENCE

*INEVITABLE COMPARISON TO PORTAL*

Now that’s out of the way, let’s all drool over Kim Swift’s upcoming Quantum Conundrum, which looks like what a computer game would look like if Pixar made computer games. That’s just a fact rather than a wild, hastily decided upon and ill-conceived opinion based on eight minutes of footage shown at CES 2012 and narrated by Kim. Now that I mention it, I did just watch just such a video and decided that anyone who didn’t have a massive grin on their face for at least half of it was probably a pod person. Now, smile. I expect to see the rictus grin of a terrified corpse when I observe you all through my periscope momentarily.

A Walk In The Dark’s Trailer Is Purrty

By Craig Pearson on January 26th, 2012.

“I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my owner go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you. Miaow.”

Indie platformer A Walk In The Dark has a cat rescuing a lost little girl in a dark, fantasy world; the quarter of Dexter that John owns once lost a fight with his own feet (my bit was obviously the winner there). I see now why they had to place the game in a gothic forest: as a cat owner of four years, I wouldn’t believe the skills he shows off in the trailer below.

Faster Pussycat, Eat, Eat! Time4Cat

By Alec Meer on August 27th, 2010.

No time2play? Try Time4Cat. It’s an over-in-minutes, single-mechanic flash game that’s about as much like a flash game as you could ever imagine, at least in terms of controls. It’s also about a cat eating untold amounts of food on a busy crossroads and helplessly controlling time as it does, so you’ll want to play it anyway. The faster you move, the more you score from each food-munch – but the faster the pedestrians storm about the place and the more danger you end up in. But what does it all mean? Well, it’s a metaphor for a time-controlling cat eating icecreams in the middle of road, silly.

It makes no sense whatsoever but it’s charmingly-drawn and, as Kyle Orland observed, it’ll devour your afternoon. Not quite this month’s Robot Unicorn Attack – no Erasure, for a start – but definitely sporting some of the same brain-cuddling compulsion.
