Test ‘Em Up – Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward Benchmark

By Alice O'Connor on April 28th, 2015.

Final Fantasy XIV [official site] may have launched in a sorry state, but I’ve heard good things from MMOers since its revamped relaunch with the A Realm Reborn subtitle. A big ole chunk of newsness is coming in June with the first expansion, Heavensward, and you can have an in-engine peek at that now running on your own computer thanks to a new benchmarking tool.

The free Heavensward benchmark will run through a few scenes showing off new things in Heavensward. It also includes the character creator so you can play with the new race in advance, and save your toons to use in the full release. Two months is about how long I need to perfect characters I create anyway.

Magic Makeovers: Dragon Age Inq Adding Customisation

By Alice O'Connor on February 14th, 2015.

Mirror mirror, on the wall, give me blue hair and make me six feet tall.

Give me a long, sprawling RPG with appearance options and I will replay the first hour at least six times. I didn’t realise how ugly that haircut actually is. I didn’t know its lighting would make that skin tone so ugly. I’d forgotten to make them interesting from behind. On reflection, that hair colour is awful. What was I even thinking with that tattoo? And I should tower over puny NPCs more.

When I get around to Dragon Age: Inquisition [official site], I might be able to skip that for once, as the next patch is due to add ways to customise your chap mid-game.

Character Creation Perfected: Perfect Glowing Bodies

By Alec Meer on February 4th, 2015.

I call this one 'Jimmy Hips'

I am so greedy. Whereas Alice musters great aesthetic appreciation for Strangethink’s experimental gamettes, my mind hungrily inclines to how they can be turned to other purposes. Case in point, I want Perfect Glowing Bodies to be the basis of a character creator in the next XCOM game, or for it to be expanded into a Syndicatelike as some neon holo-dream.

Build-A-Youth: The Sims 4’s Character Creator Demo

By Alice O'Connor on August 19th, 2014.

That's what young people look like nowadays, isn't it?

No matter what’s removed or added or changed or bro-ised with The Sims 4, we can be fairly certain it’ll allow one thing: making goofy-looking folks. But lawks a lummy, Maxis have only gone and released that part for free! The ‘Create A Sim’ character creator has been yanked out of the full game to make a demo (or we can treat it as simply a cool toy for everyone to play with). Nab it from Origin. This came out last week, but we overlooked it in all the fuss and bother of Gamescom. Luckily, pulling silly faces is timeless.

Star Trek Online: Characters Creatored

By John Walker on December 18th, 2009.

It's okay, they're behind glass.

The Star Trek Online beta has for some reason allowed us in. So of course this means spending my entire afternoon playing with the character creator. It’s made by Cryptic. Can you guess whether it’s brilliant or not? It’s brilliant.

Dragon Age Character Creator, Snazzy Trailer

By John Walker on October 13th, 2009.

He's the sort of rugged hero you can trust. To bore you about values and honour. Create someone more fun, please.

You can now download the Dragon Age character creator, letting you find out the range of races and looks available for your potential avatar. You can get it in English directly from clicking here, or if you’re after another language head to the official Dragon Age site, in the column on the right. There’s also a new and rather excellent CGI trailer, which you can see below.
