Starbound Update Will Add Permadeath, Wipe Universe

A videogame, yesterday.

In a post on the Starbound blog, the game’s development team have outlined coming fixes and additions to the next version of the game. Good news: they’re adding a permadeath mode, for those who want to add a little more risk to their galaxy exploration. Bad news: they’re kickstarting this new permadeath mode by wiping the entire universe, including player’s ships and characters.

It’s like playing alpha games is already a kind of permadeath mode.

Twinkle, Twinkle: Starbound’s Future Is Looking Bright

I'm so entranced by the vast beauty of space that I've nearly forgotten about my impending doom by explosive decompression.

Starbound is finally playable by the unwashed masses, and it’s already so magnificent that even the washed masses became unwashed masses after sitting transfixed by its exploratory glow for days. But this is just a beta test, and even then it’s only on phase one of three. There’s much more to come. Space combat! Planet-sized dungeons! A not-quite-so-mean difficulty curve! Why, someday I imagine we’ll even be able to build Starbound inside Starbound. Actually, who’s to say we haven’t done it already, that everything you see in front of you is nothing but a hyper-elaborate Starbound simulation? You’ll never escape from voxel games. You are a voxel game.

Impressions: Starbound

Starbound is a procedurally-generated universe, where you have a ship, a star-map, and an infinite number of planets to visit and plunder. It is a game that makes almost no definition between single and multiplayer, allowing you to bring your character across the void and back again, visiting the same places online and offline, and sharing those worlds with friends. Its first beta just welcomed weary travelers, and though it is missing a framework that would make it an easier game to follow, the foundation is strong. I’ve spent the weekend exploring the stars.

Life Is Beta: Starbound Out Today

For what seems like years and years and *checks torn calendar pages* years (it was actually Feb 2012), the Starbound website has mockingly invited us to Play Starbound. But we couldn’t play, could we? It was not out, yet. That unfulfilled entreaty caused me to go into a bit of a emotional loop, where I’d click the site, get sad, leave, and then click it again. I’m doing it right now, but only as a final hurrah. The first part of the Starbound beta is out today. To whet your loins and gird your appetite, there is a trailer below.

Wot I Think: Risk Of Rain

I have died so many times. Risk of Rain is a small game and not altogether perfectly formed, but it also reminds me of The Binding of Isaac in all the best ways, except with cooperative multiplayer and weird science fiction in place of poo and blood. The ferocious difficulty and hordes of monsters also remind me another recent favourite – Teleglitch. Here’s wot I think.

Starbound is Betabound, Landing Around Dec 4th

If ‘arrangements go through with Steam’, Starbound’s first beta will be available around December 4th. I’ve opened a can of fizz in celebration of the fact because Starbound’s procedural planets and penguins look splendid, and December 4th isn’t much more than a week away. Instead of counting down the days until Christmas, I’m going to start counting the days until Starbound, even if it might not be quite as punctual as Daddy Jesus Claus.

Starbound Beta Starting ‘Soon,’ Unfolding In Three Phases

I'm pretty sure that trees species' closest genetic relative is the squid.

Humanity seems more prone than ever to heart-pulverizing squabbles and disgusting, knock-down-drag-out wars these days, but at least we can all agree on one thing: we really, really want Starbound to come out already. The wait for the Terraria-alike to end all Terraria-alikes has become unbearable, so you should be happy to hear that you won’t have to bear it for much longer. Starbound’s first beta is officially on the horizon, with developer Chucklefish gleefully chucking around words like “soon” and “really not very far off now.” More importantly, they’ve outlined how exactly the beta’s various phases are going to play out. If you’re hoping to join, this is probably required reading.

Impressions: Risk Of Rain Beta

At the very centre of the crossroads between roguelikelike and metroidvania lies Risk Of Rain. It is a ridiculously compelling procedurally generated side-scrolling platform survivor-me-do, with multiple characters to play as, single and co-op play, and some of the hardest-hitting deaths I’ve experienced in such games. Recently Greenlit, and due out very soon, I thought I’d plunge into the beta.

Elastic Dreams: Starbound’s Grappling Hook

I am in danger of becoming over-excited about Starbound, but it looks so darned charming. If it were a baby, it would have dimples and would giggle at everything, and my girlfriend wouldn’t want to spend anytime with it in case I end up broody. Today’s over-excited squee from me comes from the reveal of the grappling hook technology. It’s a first-look, so there’s a lot that needs tweaked and fixed, but grappling hooks, people! Hooks that grapple! There’s a video of it below, as well as an hour-and-a-half playthrough with the developers.

Gluggy Lovely: Treasure Adventure World Trailer

Sharks make the best pets
Developers are always suggesting the best way to get into the games industry is to ‘make something’. Not anything, though. You can’t assemble a day bed and walk into Bethesda demanding a job making Skyrim expansions. No, they mean you should make a game, or a bit of a game, or something gamey. If you made a game about a day bed, maybe you’d have a chance? That’s what Stephen Orlando did when he made Treasure Adventure Game, a wonderful and free adventure platformer that was all game (but not about a day bed). He’s since been working on Treasure Adventure World, a remix and remake of it that will definitely place him in the games industry if you buy it. There’s a ‘help me fund it’ page here.
