Impressions: Risk Of Rain Beta

At the very centre of the crossroads between roguelikelike and metroidvania lies Risk Of Rain. It is a ridiculously compelling procedurally generated side-scrolling platform survivor-me-do, with multiple characters to play as, single and co-op play, and some of the hardest-hitting deaths I’ve experienced in such games. Elastic Dreams: Starbound’s Grappling Hook

I am in danger of becoming over-excited about Starbound, but it looks so darned charming. If it were a baby, it would have dimples and would giggle at everything, and my girlfriend wouldn’t want to spend anytime with it in case I end up broody. Today’s over-excited squee from me comes from the reveal of the grappling hook technology. It’s a first-look, so there’s a lot that needs tweaked and fixed, but grappling hooks, people! Hooks that grapple! There’s a video of it below, as well as an hour-and-a-half playthrough with the developers.

Developers are always suggesting the best way to get into the games industry is to ‘make something’. Not anything, though. You can’t assemble a day bed and walk into Bethesda demanding a job making Skyrim expansions. No, they mean you should make a game, or a bit of a game, or something gamey. If you made a game about a day bed, maybe you’d have a chance? That’s what Stephen Orlando did when he made Treasure Adventure Game, a wonderful and free adventure platformer that was all game (but not about a day bed). He’s since been working on Treasure Adventure World, a remix and remake of it that will definitely place him in the games industry if you buy it. There’s a ‘help me fund it’ page here. The Next Hour Is Starbound Hour

I’m very sad: there are people out there playing Starbound and they are not me, and unless you part of the development team, some of the Yogscast, or an evil hacker, then they are most likely not you. Are you sad, too? Would that sadness you’re feeling to end? I can’t really help with that, because a hug from another sad person is usually wet and broken. Best I can do is post an hour of footage of the game and fake a smile. This is taken from a presentation at Insomnia Gaming Festival, where three of the internet’s popular Let’s Players gave the first proper public demonstration of the space-faring co-op adventure game.

Two (Yes Two!) Starbound Videos For You

I always feel like I’m playing catch-up on Monday mornings. Game news doesn’t stop, so I have to hop back and make sure we didn’t miss anything. But after drinking irradiated orange juice, I accidentally overshot the weekend by about three weeks. So here I am in the past, where everything is black and white and people are riding dinosaurs. Instead of abusing my position as a person unstuck in time, I am going to blog about Starbound. RPS missed this first video of Chucklefish’s space adventure game, so I can post it without causing a paradox and ripping the universe a new timehole.

Space Jam In Starbound

I’m still waiting for Starbound to be released, and I blame David Bowie. If he hadn’t gone to space to make an album of space lounge songs with Flight of the Conchords, the Starbound developers wouldn’t have spent the time and effort to try and ape him. So instead of playing the game right now, which is what definitely would be happening if David Bowie didn’t exist, all I have to show you is a video of the latest crafting items that they’ve made for the game: musical instruments. After a long day Starbounding, if you just want to relax with friends, maybe pick up an instrument and have a “jam”, you totally can.

Starbound Pre-Orders Prove Somewhat Popular

Starbound, which we’ve talked about previously, is said to be a “spiritual successor” (although not directly affiliated) to the enormously popular Terraria. This sentiment bodes well for the game as its pre-orders, which have only been open since last night, have already raised an exceptional $159,799 at the time of writing. That’s a figure that’s fast increasing. That’s a figure that – hand in hand with Prison Architect – show that you don’t need to rely on Kickstarter if you have the right game. Starbound is due to have a beta this year, and pre-ordering persons will gain access when that appears.

Second Wind: Treasure Adventure Game Being Rebuilt

Remember Treasure Adventure Game? Come now, don’t make me roll up a copy of Adam’s brief yet glowing appraisal and beat you over the nose with it. You have a very attractive nose. Since I cherish its Greek-sculpture-like beauty, I suppose I’ll eschew punishment and just tell you it was a peaceful, pleasant explorer jetted with jolts of high-seas derring-do. TAG was, however, also a labor of low-budget love, so it took a hit or two in the scope and scale department. But no more. Robit and Chucklefish (two gaming companies, in spite of names that suggest they’re actually a comedic noir future mystery-solving duo) are gutting TAG, starting from scratch with a gorgeous new art style, and rechristening the whole thing Treasure Adventure World. It looks quite scrumptious. Have a gander after the break.

Starbound Will Let You Build Anti-Ape Lairs

Or maybe this one's pro-ape? There's a plethora of potential interpretations here.

A quick refresher: Starbound is the Terraria pseudo-successor (Edit: Some of the same talent’s on board; it’s not directly affiliated, though) that lets you generate your own planet. That in mind, I suppose it only makes sense that an inhabitant of one of its many worlds would be militantly anti-ape. After all, apes + a planet = Planet of the Apes. It happens every time. I’m sure, though, that you’ll be able to discriminate against other creatures as well, seeing as Starbound’s co-op building system is looking as impressively versatile as, well, everything else about the strikingly ambitious wonder. Wiser people than I once said, “If you build [a break], they will come [and watch a new Starbound trailer].” Truth be told, I’ve never really understood that saying, but it’s starting to make a little more sense now.

Starbound Receives Support From Wanderlust: Rebirth

Starbound looks less like Terraria in space and more like just a heck of a lot of awesome stuff in space, with the randomly generated aliens a particular highlight of the features shown so far. Perhaps you would like to throw money at the developers, as is so often the case with internet people, although rarely if ever the action of a person in the real world. Well, you can’t. There’s no Kickstarter or alpha funding here. However, Yeti Trunk, creators of mad co-op RPG Wanderlust: Rebirth are supporting Starbound by offering a percentage of Steam earnings to help with development costs. Chucklefish are bringing Wanderlust to Steam on July 27th.

Starbound Has A Lot Of Trees

Frolic, tiny man. Frolic amongst the space trees.
No, seriously. This may be the most tree-rich game I’ve ever come across. And yet, while Starbound‘s latest trailer runs through woodlands of all shapes, sizes, and colors, Chucklefish chuckles in its oh-so-recognizably fish-like fashion at my pitiful notions of impressiveness. It’s designated this bouquet of majestic foliage as a “small selection of the art that will be present in the finished game” from just one of many possible biomes. “Terraria in space,” I’d say, is a misnomer. This strikes me more as Super Terraria Galaxy – yes, planetary exploration is the focus, but it’s lightyears beyond its spiritual predecessor in terms of sheer ambition. I mean, we’re talking entire randomly generated galaxies of randomly generated planets with randomly generated foliage and creatures. It sounds insane. It probably is insane. But I’m excited about a game’s trees. That has to mean something, right? Venture past the break for the full trailer.

Far From Terraria Firma: Starbound

It was probably when the first screenshot from Starbound emerged onto the hazy plains of the internet that a law was passed making it illegal to refer to the game without nodding approvingly and saying, “Huh, Terraria in space I guess”. Yes, it’s a side-scrolling game with mining and construction, a similar visual style, and, yes, there’s crossover in some of the design talent, but there are plenty of differences as well. For one, rather than seeding standalone worlds, Starbound takes place on planets which can be visited by other players, provided you pass them the coordinates. There’s a lot more variety in terms of creatures and landscapes as well, with procedurally generated flora and fauna. Thrillingly, the only video I’ve found is a lighting demo. Be thrilled!
