Bwah? – Neal Stephenson’s CLANG, 39 Others Greenlit

By Nathan Grayson on November 13th, 2013.

Maybe Valve should put a yellow light in front of Steam Greenlight, because it needs to slooooooooow down – for just a second or two, anyway. I mean, don’t get me wrong: I’m all for tons of games getting the go-ahead to drown in sweet, sweet Greenlight green, but this week’s batch included – among a few other questionable/forgettable picks – Neal Stephenson’s CLANG. You know, the one whose development has been mostly halted and may not ever reach completion? Admittedly, Stephenson claims it’ll get finished no matter what… somehow, but maybe Valve should’ve held off until it was in a less questionable position? Or given the slot to a more deserving game? With improvements come new complications. Guess it’s true what they say: it’s not easy bein’ green(light).

THUD: Development Of Neal Stephenson’s CLANG Halted

By Nathan Grayson on September 20th, 2013.

Yikes. It appears that Snow Crash author Neal Stephenson and the CLANG team have a bit of a mess on their hands. And by “a bit,” I mean the sort that requires years of clean-up and nearly extinguishes at least seven species of marine life. Here’s the skinny: $526,125 in Kickstarter money apparently wasn’t enough for the peripheral-dependent savior of swordfighting, so Stephenson and co were hoping to seek out a more traditional deal to bolster it – for instance venture capital funding or a publisher. So far? No dice. So the team has been forced to “hit the pause button” on further development in order to sort out a new plan of attack. They don’t seem particularly optimistic, either – at least, not in the near term. Oh, and in case you were worried: you’reĀ not getting your money back. Not yet, anyway.

The Sweet Clang Of Success

By Alec Meer on July 9th, 2012.

It’s looked a little touch and go as to whether Neal Stephenson’s crowd-sourced swordfighting game Clang was going to make it. But it has, which means there’s one more game added to the list of titles which we hope and pray can ultimately prove those whole Kickstarter thing is a valid model for independent development. At the time of writing, Clang has $520,000 of an intended $500,000, and $90,000 of that was nine people opting for the $10k tier that gets them a replica weapon and a dev visit. A few hours are left go on the kick-clock, in case you’ve been dithering about how much you want stuff.

So, well done Mr Stephenson and crew. You can now make digital swordfighting dreams real. As long as you have a Razer Hydra motion controller, anyway.

Neal Stephenson’s Making A Game, Called CLANG

By John Walker on June 9th, 2012.

Seriously.

Bam. Neal Stephenson, the author of science and historical fiction like Snow Crash and The System Of The World, has just announced he’s making a game. In fact, he announces he’s been researching how to make a game for years, and now he’s ready to make it. A sword fighting game, that will address his frustration with how sword fighting has been portrayed and delivered so far. With a Kickstarter video. With Gabe Newell in it. You need to watch this pitch video, below. CLANG!
