Still Alive: Company of Heroes

By Alec Meer on May 31st, 2011.

Men of war

Oh, old man Company of Heroes, so good to see you again. Pull a comfy chair up to the fire and tell us another war story. It must hurt, having seen your younger, free to pay brother pass away so unexpectedly last year, but at least we’ve still got you. And what’s that? You’re not ready to go gently into that good night yourself yet? You have a healthy new patch laden with six extra maps and a bewildering array of balance changes? Excellent.

CoHO Adds New Maps, Still Closing

By Jim Rossignol on February 21st, 2011.

Maps, like topological portraiture
News reaches my nightmare fortress tower of an update to Company Of Heroes Online. There are two new maps to play, the 4-player Road to Montherme and an 8-player map called Hill 331. Of course this new terrain won’t be around for long, because the service is shutting down on March 31st. Play ‘em while you got ‘em, I suppose.

Company Of Heroes Online Closing?

By Jim Rossignol on February 1st, 2011.

A news post on the Company Of Heroes Online website contains this message from Relic: “After an exciting period of operating and testing, we will be closing Open Beta on March 31, 2011 to evaluate the next steps for the Company of Heroes series.” Sounds pretty final. Any cash spent in the game can be used up to that point, and anyone who registered with the game before February 1st can get Company Of Heroes: Gold Edition for $4.99. The message signs off: “We are excited to reveal the next evolution of the series in the near future.”

I shall try to find out a bit more information, but this is starting to look like one free-to-play experiment that didn’t quite work out.

Land Of The Free: Company Of Heroes Online

By Phill Cameron on October 15th, 2010.

Land Of The Free is an ongoing series looking at free to play games. This week we dip into the ongoing Company of Heroes Online beta.

Coming back to Company of Heroes, after all this time, feels somewhat akin to returning to your parents house. It’s the same place, and you spent a lot of time here, but somehow, something is different. And that something is you.

Company Of Heroes Open Beta Online

By Jim Rossignol on September 3rd, 2010.

That’s the Company Of Heroes Online open beta online, you understand. As promised a while back, Relic’s free-to-play take on their popular strategy is now open to all. It has been announced in full here by Relic’s Greg Wilson, Producer of COHO. The RPS hivemind will be plugging itself into this next week, so we might have some thoughts to broadcast on it soon. But if you fancy some tactical cleverness then you can sign up on the front page link here, this very instant.

Company Of Heroes Online: Allies Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on August 31st, 2010.

We’re getting more excited about Company Of Heroes Online by the day. The game is closed beta at the moment, and we’re expecting to have some of our own impressions of the game up here before it hits later in September. For a taste of why we’re excited head below. This recent trailer details a bunch of the units available to Allied forces and it’s really splendidly produced. Go take a look.

(There really is some stuff to be said about the quality of free-to-play stuff coming out this year, but that’s for another article.)

Company of Heroes Online Keys Giveaway

By Quintin Smith on August 2nd, 2010.

The guns of August, right here.

Attention, soldier! Stand up straight! Take your hands out of your pants! Both of them, God dammit! Fileplanet are giving away beta keys for Company of Heroes Online, Relic’s free-to-play reinvention of its award-winning RTS with added hero units and persistent development of your army. I’ve got my key and word on the heavily-shelled street is that this is really quite good, so I’ll be posting a more detailed investigation later in the week.

Company Of Heroes Online For US In Fall

By Jim Rossignol on June 4th, 2010.

And Canada, but apparently not Europe. Anyway, it seems that the free-to-play version of Relic’s RTS will be making its way back from its Asian success for a Western launch in the autumn. The notion is that you create a persistent profile which you can work on over time, playing through many multiplayer matches of the game as you go. It’s going to be microtransaction-supported, but the fairly useful Q&A that is up on the COH site says that they’re not ready to discuss details on quite how that will work for the US version of the game. All this won’t affect existing COH multiplayer, which will still be supported. Trailer below!

How To Sneak Into Company Of Heroes Online

By Alec Meer on August 17th, 2009.

Relic are meanies! Meanies! They go and make an exciting-sounding MMO-esque follow-up to Company of Heroes, complete with persistent online characters and ranks, and then they only go and restrict it to China. Meanies!

Oh, wait. They’ve just revealed a way for us Western-types to have a crack at it, and for free too. Cuddlies!
