Chell Is Other People: Cute Portal Cosplay

By Kieron Gillen on November 7th, 2010.

Hello, Alt-text readers. Have you missed me?

Just clearing out my phone and found some footage and shots I took at the MCM Expo last weekend. It’s of a Portal cosplayer who caught my eye because she had a remote control Companion cube*, which is pretty fancy. Also, now I look again, looks a lot like a teen version of Ex-Edge Ed now-designer Margaret Robertson. Spooks! Click through for the full photo, and find the snippet of MOVING CUBE is below…

Crykey: The Real-Life Nanosuit

By Alec Meer on September 20th, 2010.

Given my height, I'd need a Nano-nanosuit

He calls himself Master Le Cosplay. Going on this, he’s probably right. This gentleman has built himself a frighteningly detailed Crysis Nanosuit, complete with weapons. Super-strength, speed and invisibility TBC. Though frankly invisibility’s going to be nigh-on impossible looking like that.

Don’t Just Stand There: Stalkerfest

By Jim Rossignol on October 5th, 2009.

Sergey Galyonkin sends word that he’s posted pictures from the heavily-attended Stalkerfest 2009 over on Flickr. You can check out the mass of cosplayers (reportedly around 500) and also see GSC’s developer band getting up on stage top strut their stuff. For those of you down with the local language, there’s also a blog account of the event here.

Buy Dawn Of War II Or The Car Gets It

By Alec Meer on February 11th, 2009.

As I’m already atrophying my feeble soul by posting about viral marketing, I might as well show you this too. THQ decided to build a real-life Space Marine Rhino APC to promote the upcoming Dawn of War II (on which we hope to have a Wot I Think soon-ish). If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a short video of a science-fictional tank crushing a car should certainly make up for the brevity of this post’s word count:

TaserStick Included

By Jim Rossignol on September 12th, 2008.

Kotaku spotted this awesome piece of homemade costume-craft up for sale on Ebay. It’s a full Half-Life 2 Combine Metrocop outfit, which apparently even has a voicebox thing to make you sound even more like the game’s grumpy evil policemen. The reason for this authenticity is that it was a prop from a short movie, “The Combine Interview”, which – along with a closer look at the item itself – I’ve linked after the jump.

It’s currently bid for at $202.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R In The Realities

By John Walker on May 13th, 2008.

If you’re going to do cosplay, don’t dress up as some manga character with a purple sash – it’s too easy. If you’re going to do it, do it with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

stalker cosplay

Thanks to Isaiah who sent us a link to this Russian site not only of STALKER fans taking the game into the real world at Chernobyl, but also some really fantastic photography. It’s well worth a look.

If you want to get a bit more understanding of what’s going on (but not much), here’s the Google translation of the page. EDIT: And with even better translation from Xander77 in the comments below!

RPS Photojournalism(ish): Cosplay in the UK

By Kieron Gillen on March 19th, 2008.

ItsaMe! Racial Stereotype-a!

So, yesterday I found myself in London. And, as you may have heard, there was a Guinness World Record attempt to set a record for the number of people dressed as videogame characters in one place. Since there wasn’t one before, it wasn’t exactly hard, but (er) a number of people (Gamespot report over eighty, but I heard both 85 and 86 bandied around) braved chilly weather to pose amusingly with each other.

Clearly, I took a load of photos of anyone who even vaguely looked like a PC game character.

Team Fortress 2 Cosplay

By Alec Meer on October 29th, 2007.

You’ve already seen the Portal Halloween costume – now here’s the Team Fortress 2 one (click pic to embiggen).

Extramegoultra bonus points for actually fricking building the Heavy’s gun.

Big thanks to Thiefsie for sending it over. Its original source has been located here, where you’ll find a bunch of other images of Janvitos and his RED chums.

Update: and Thiefsie follows up his find with this (click to see full version in its original home):

I wouldn’t like to say which one is most awesome. Because they are both awesome.

PopCap And Portal, Sitting In A Tree

By John Walker on October 28th, 2007.

We received an excellent email from PopCap employee Anthony Coleman, showing us his Halloween costume.

Which really is rather extraordinary.

Madder than me.

He explains,

“I made this over the past few nights out of ~85 square feet of ½ inch thick foam board. It is split horizontally into an upper and lower section. I had to do this so I could get it out of my house and fit it into the car. When complete it is a 30”x30”x30” cube that I can tuck myself completely inside of (that’s why I have the heart circle hat).”

The man’s a genius.

PC Gamer: Cosplaying Lara

By John Walker on August 30th, 2007.

A fun piece of nonsense I wrote for PC Gamer in the current issue’s Extra Life has gone online today. It’s a guide to cosplaying Lara in Tomb Raider: Anniversary. In the game, I mean. I’ll leave Kieron to write a guide to cosplaying as her in real life.

Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Anyway, it’s deeply silly and surprisingly fun. And yes, one of them has her in the nude. But she’s FAR cuter as a tiger.

Less Big Daddy, More Shirley Crabtree

By Kieron Gillen on August 13th, 2007.

Okay. We’ve had enough corporate evilness puncturing our happy-happy joy-joy over-excitement over the forthcoming Bioshock. Let’s have something to warm our hearts as we prepare ourselves for entering an art-deco hell.

(Don’t worry – the second we play it, we’ll start a too-cool-for-school It’s-not-all-that Backlash, because that’s the way we roll at Rock Paper Shotgun. We’re absolute cunts.)

Destructoid have been running a dress like Big Daddy compo. It’s over now, and the results have yet to be announced, but their members have been posting about their efforts.

Bless them.

Sexy

Angels Don’t Burn manages to capture the horror and majesty of the Big Daddy using the ever-trusty Blue-Peter staples of Cardboard, Foil and a complete lack of embarrassment.

Also Sexy

Agent Moo decides to disregard the cardboard and foil and just go heavy on the complete lack of embarrassment.

Possible Rapist

Genacon, to be honest, looks a bit like a rapist.

Sexy again

Finally Sazemaster is the person who is i) clearly going to win ii) probably has spent a bit too much time on this iii) will have everyone else who lives with them wondering where all the kitchen foil’s gone iv) The only one who appears to have got his girlfriend/sister to dress up as Big Daddy. And there’s jokes to be made here, but I’m not going to go for them. His Flickr page details the construction in heartwarming detail.

There’s many more examples over in the thread too. We recommend you go look, to give us time to consider whether our Dress Like A Character In Nethack competition’s actually a good idea.
