Counter-Strike Update Adds Six Maps, Calms Dogs, More

By Graham Smith on July 2nd, 2014.

How long is it before everyone copies Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive update structure? The latest addition to the venerable multiplayer shooter is called Operation Breakout, and it adds six new maps for everyone to play for free. For those willing and able to pay $6, you then get a now-familiar bundle of upgrades including access to mission drops with the chance to unlock “45 exclusive weapon finishes”, a Challenge Coin which tracks your achievement-y ‘mission’ progress, and a new weapon case containing new community designs.

Given how most other games split their multiplayer communities by selling the maps directly, and given how that split is bad even for the developers, surely it’s only a matter of time before we’re covering our Battlefield and Call of Duty weaponry with paid-for and unlockable stickers and baubles. More details on the update and its maps below.

You Could Pre-Purchase Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

By John Walker on August 8th, 2012.

This shot always reminds me of Tomb Raider, and then I feel like I can identify with the game. I can't.

Here are some things you could do today: You could finally read that article you’ve left in your tabs for over a week now. You could give your mum a call – just to say hi. You could pre-order Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. You could high five a stranger and tell them they look amazing. Oh, and if you do that third one, you can get the game for 10% off, and get into the beta a week before it launches.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Beta Begins

By John Walker on November 30th, 2011.

This is what we aren't playing.

If you were lucky enough to receive a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta invite (and we weren’t) then you’ll be pleased to learn the beta has just begun. We don’t care, because we don’t have an invite, so it’s pretty irrelevant to us. The beta, that arrived via Valve Time a touch late, will scale up (when perhaps we’ll be invited, maybe), aiming for a release “early 2012″. Which could mean any time between now and the eventual entropic destruction of the universe. Apparently it’s only a teeny weeny bit of the game, so doesn’t even require a pre-load for excited people who are able to play it, which we aren’t.
