The Last Night Is Flashback Meets Blade Runner In Pixel Art

Often game jams produce a lot of interesting ideas rendered in basic, barely-legible programmer art, but themes like the cyberpunk jam or the space cowboy jam seem to attract artists as much as game designers.

Case in point: The Last Night, made by brothers Tim and Adrien Soret. It’s a “Blade Runner + delicious pixels”. It’s inspired by Flashback and games of its era. It is by implication a stealth game, though it contains no mechanics to support that so you have to shoot everything. It is three minutes long, beautifully drawn, and full of great music. Outpunned And Outgunned: AdvertCity

Faced with a title like AdvertCity, I have to concede defeat, pop the cap back on my best punning pen and call it a day. It’s strong work and there’s an intriguing slice of game hiding between the delicious word-layers. Originally released as part of the Cyberpunk Jam, AdvertCity is a strategy game that plays out like a more realistic version of Syndicate. Instead of taking over a city by means of miniguns and Persuadertrons, the corporations of AdvertCity utilise billboards and advertising blimps. I suppose it could be argued that advertisements are a low-tech form of the Persuadertron but BLIMPS. Observe.

Welcome To The Cyberscraper: The Tallest Building

Isometric cyber-battles atop The Tallest Building. The sky is a tumbling digital waterfall, plunged through with geometric whorls and eddies. Twenty waves of enemies await the warrior foolhardy enough to reach for the Neurocyber Crown, which hangs above the skyscraper. I don’t think there’s anything I want more than a Neurocyber Crown, even though I’m not sure what it is or what it does. I assume it has a regal appearance concealing a number of wires that snake into the wearer’s thought-meat. To seize it, the player must battle with sword, shield, pistol and rocket launcher in this challenging free browser game.
