To The Axed Cave! Gotham By Gaslight

By Alec Meer on February 28th, 2012.

also by moonlight, the cheats

Gotham by Gaslight - aka Victorian Batman vs Jack the Ripper – was a big deal for comics back in the early 1990s, what with it both transplanting Bats into a new setting and being a self-contained tale rather than the usual unending episodic fare. Sadly it’s been largely ignored in this modern age of ultra high-tech Batmen and Grant Morrison miring poor ol’ Bruce in endless, obtuse fantasy stories about nothing, but a few years ago Day 1 Studios were set to make a videogame based upon this 19th Century superhero. You’ll know Day 1 from FEThreeR, the Xbox MechAssault games and the upcoming PC multiplayer mech title Reign of Thunder, so their heritage perhaps isn’t really in the vein of the quiet, thoughtful oddness of GbG.

Whether or not they’d have pulled it off is something we’ll never know, as it was canned before development started in earnest – but a leaked proof-of-concept animation trailer does suggest it could have been an especially atmospheric steampunk odyssey.

Free To Stomp: MechAssault Devs’ Reign Of Thunder

By Alec Meer on February 20th, 2012.

ROT is an unfortunate acronym

2012: what a funny old year. It’s one in which we get remakes of both X-COM and Jagged Alliance, and now it looks like there’ll be multiple mech games too. First there was MechWarrior Online, then there was MechWarrior Tactics, and now there is Reign of Thunder. Coming from the steady but Xboxen hand of MechAssault pilots Day 1 Studios, RoT is a free-to-play affair due for launch later this year. No confirmed platforms, but ‘free to play’ and ‘PC’ seem to go together like dogs and lamp-posts (no, I don’t know which one equals which) so I’d be very surprised if Reign of Thunder didn’t walk this way. Our first glimpse of it marches through the storm below. Wow, that was a horrible, mixed metaphor-blighted sentence if ever there was one.

Scare Tactics: Fear 3 Multiplayer Trailer

By Quintin Smith on April 15th, 2011.

F**k off.

A trailer’s been released covering upcoming horror FPS F.E.A.R. 3′s range of innovative multiplayer modes, namely Contractions, Soul Survivor, Soul King (which sounds like “Sulking” to me) and, of course, F**king Run. Turns out F.E.A.R. 3′s getting released on May 24th, just a couple of weeks after Brink, which is coming out one week after Section 8: Prejudice. Hmm. That’s unlikely to turn out well for anyone involved.

No F3AR: Not Until May, Anyway

By Jim Rossignol on January 13th, 2011.

Here is the news about F.E.A.R. 3: it has been delayed. Warner Bros confirmed last night that the spooky shooter sequel would not arrive until May. We are going to assume that is because Day 1 Studios are making it awesome. Also, did everyone know that Jon Carpenter was helping with the cutscenes? I’d missed that somehow, but there it is.

I really liked the original game, but the subsequent stuff has been a bit tedious. I’m rather hoping this, with its superstar plot people and “evolved cover system” might be a bit better. It’s troubling me a bit that the trailers have all been live action rubbish and stuff.

F.E.A.R. 3′s Obligatory Halloween Spooks

By Jim Rossignol on October 29th, 2010.

Hell, if anyone was going to make an effort for Halloween, it should probably be the studio making FEAR 3. The new trailer is suitable something-curdling. Also, the game has been dated for 25th March 2011 in the UK, and the 22nd everywhere else. Boo. And I mean that in a derisory/commiseratory sense, rather than the Halloween sense.

F.E.A.R. 3 Is A Mech Worrier

By Jim Rossignol on October 15th, 2010.

Fear 3 has mechs in, and developers Day 1 are keen for us to get to know them a bit better. Don’t worry about the mechs looking all big and scary, they’re almost entirely friendly! They’re called the PA (Power Armor), which we first saw in FEAR1, and EPA (Enhanced Power Armor), which we first saw in FEAR2 (I think), and they both just want to be piloted by a single, caring pilot. They’re also both going to feature heavily in this game, as you can see in the trailer below. Day 1 have sent out a bunch of details about the history and use of mechs, the rambling from which I will spare you, but essentially it suggests that there will be some more depth to what these suits can do, particularly in co-op, in addition to some new features for both PA and EPA. It’s not clear exactly what this will amount to in the game itself, but it’s a tantalising mention, especially with regard to co-op use. Hell, I’ve not been particularly interested in Fear 3 up to this point but, well, maybe…

F3AR: Ridiculous Series Is Still Ridiculous

By Quintin Smith on September 2nd, 2010.

A new F3AR video’s surfaced from PAX, talking about how the franchise is being shifted from Monolith to developers Day 1, mixed with a bunch of footage of the game with some very excitable editing. Check it out after the jump.

What’s happening with F3AR? Well, they’re asking “how they can evolve this franchise, and capture the essence of what it really is, but growing it into something that’s bigger, that’s more amazing and delivers a better experience for the consumer.” I’ve just run that through the Corporate-O-Tron, and it translates as… “More of the same”? Oh, well.

Co-Op Spooks: F.THREE.A.R Footage

By John Walker on June 2nd, 2010.

They didn't wait for him to get off before boarding the train.

Some F.E.A… FEAR 3 footage has appeared, showing the peculiar contrast of the two co-operatively playable characters. One expertly shoots with guns, the other seems to be sucking out souls and casting magics. Which is an unquestionably new approach to the spook-em-up series, this time in the hands of Day 1 Studios, rather than previous developers Monolith. You can see the video below.

F.E.A.R. 3: F***ton Petal and Pointy Man

By Alec Meer on April 9th, 2010.

I awake at 6 am, fully-clothed, drool-covered hands on drool-covered laptop keyboard, nonsense half-sentences on the screen. I brush the sleeping cat off my feet, I rub my agonisingly cricked neck, and I cursecursecurse my decision to go drinking with Kieron and his comics friends rather than cook myself a sensible supper. I also realise I am at least six hours late for Thursday’s posts on RPS. I must do them now! But about what? I scour my boozy dreams for inspiration. One in which a PR agency was circulating an image of Felicia Day with a badly Photoshopped-on beard and claiming it was their new hiring, Dave. Something about birds fighting. No, I can’t tell you that one. Ah yes, F.E.A.R 3. I actually dreamed about sodding F.E.A.R. 3.
