The Best Things In Death (Rally) Are Free This Weekend

I have to say, I appreciate games that let us know what they’re all about upfront. These days, the industry revels in adding subtitles to subtitles, but there’s something to be said for simplicity, grace, and handsome elegance. That in mind, DEATH RALLY. It’s a rally in which everyone dies. Constantly. Beautiful. It is, of course, a remake of Remedy’s top-down classic with a new paint job and a few tweaks under the hood, which probably explains why it’s not called, say, Race Carr’s Armenian Fastdrive. Also, it’s free this weekend. Huzzah!

Remedy Renaissance: Death Rally Remake Coming To PC

Oh Remedy, how we missed you during those few years when you just stopped and absolutely didn’t make any games on anything ever. Perhaps you traveled to the furthest corners of the world in an attempt to find yourself. Maybe you struggled with a crippling addiction to some illicit substance and became embroiled in an inspirational struggle to reclaim your own life. Maybe I just accidentally reverse-engineered the plot to Max Payne 3. Regardless, we’ll probably never know exactly what you were up to, but – with Alan Wake, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, and now a remake of top-down sunshine-and-rainbows racer Death Rally – it’s good to have you back. Details and one of the more bizarre announcement trailers I’ve ever seen after the break.

Brand New? You’re Retro: Death Rally

Vroom? Why, yes, my friend - Vroom.

This is really quite sweet. Way back in the day, when Max Payne was happily married and didn’t expect everyone he loved to have been killed to give him motivation to shoot dudes (slowly), Remedy made a racing game. It was called Death Rally. They’ve updated it from the DOS to work on modern systems and made it freely available to download. It features both death and rallying, so is adroitly named. My favourite feature is how you can run over the people watching the actual event, which probably explains track-attendance figures slipping in recent Death Rally years. Now, Remedy! Get back to working on Alan Wake. You’ll find some Youtube Death Rally DOSbox footage below…
