Hurrah! – Defense Grid 2 Funded By Secret Investor

By Nathan Grayson on April 26th, 2013.

But who defends the defenders?

Last summer, with our wallets combined, we nearly came together to form Defense Grid 2. But not quite. The cruel genie-in-a-bottle that is Kickstarter gave us most of what we wanted, but not all of it. So yes, surprise expansion Defense Grid: Containment got funded, but the promise of Defense Grid 2 melted like ash in our mouths when Hidden Path’s crowdfunding drive fell well short of $1,000,000. Jim and Alec have been weeping incessantly ever since. Now, however, I’m excited to report that they’ve stopped – and also that we’re getting a full Defense Grid sequel after all I guess! Some glorious tower-defending angel investor swept in from on high, and the day is saved.

Griddle Me This: Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter

By Adam Smith on July 13th, 2012.

Cook me up another helping of Defense Grid and serve it with plenty of relish, I almost said to the internet just days ago. OK, it might have responded, but it’ll cost you. How much? That’s where things become a little more complicated. Hidden Path’s Kickstarter has four major targets to reach: the first ($250,000) will lead to an eight level expansion with a new story; the second ($500,000) will allow development of a new engine with all original Defense Grid content upgraded to it, plus a new co-op mode; tier three brings a level editor, more multiplayer content, and Mac and Linux releases; and the final tier would bring a full sequel. The opening of the project video (below) is my favourite Kickstarter yet and there are more details on the page.

Defense Grid To Get GLaDOS Expansion

By Jim Rossignol on December 3rd, 2011.

Hidden Path, the Defense Grid devs who are now so closely associated with Valve that they are working on CS:GO, have announced that Defense Grid will receive a Portal-themed called “You Monster.” The expansion, which will arrive on the 7th of December, guest-stars GLaDOS as a second narrator, and sees players take on Portal-themed levels. You Monster will apparently add eight new maps for the “all new” story and thirty five challenge missions, making about fifteen hours more defending of grids. No word on how much it’s going to cost, however. $5 apparently.

Trailer below!

By Jim Rossignol on June 3rd, 2010.

Defense Grid, you might recall, was one of our favourites from yesteryear – read about it here – and it’s being promised “resurgence” by a bunch of new content now up on Steam. There are going to be four new map packs for Defense Grid, one for each week of june, and each going for $0.99/£0.79. Each release will have two new maps and “for additional modes” alongside the normal campaign settings. The first pack is here.

Tower Defenders: Hidden Path On Defense Grid

By Alec Meer on July 9th, 2009.

Jim and I both had brief, torrid love affairs with last year’s indie-but-shiny, berry-obsessed tower defence title Defense Grid: The Awakening. We weren’t alone – it hit #3 in the Steam charts back in October. Now this defence game is on the offence again, having made the jump to a boxed version for the online’n’DRM-fearing crowd. Seems as good a time as any to sit down with its developers Hidden Path Entertainment and chat about the whys and wherefores of this lovely wee thing, and what they’re working on next…

Defence Grid: The Bargaining

By Alec Meer on May 7th, 2009.

Normally we save our excitement about temporarily cut-priced games for our weekly Saturday bargain bucket post, but this one’s a little bit special. Both Jim and I are devout admirers of sparkly indie tower defence game Defense Grid: The Awakening, but whenever we’ve written about it previously we’ve bemoaned its surprisingly high price. Get it under a tenner, we cried. Now there seems to have been some sort of glorious overcompensation…

I’ve Been Playing… Defence Grid: The Awakening

By Alec Meer on April 3rd, 2009.

Jim tried valiantly to get us all to play this back in December, but unfortunately I suffer from a rare, tragic medical condition that means it takes at least three months to react to anything anyone says to me. Waitaminnit, Obama’s president? And the Beatles have split? Man!

Defence Grid Demo On Steam

By Jim Rossignol on January 16th, 2009.

Previously I articulated some positive feelings towards Defence Grid in this here blog posting. More recently we are to discover, thanks to the eagle eyes of one Sam Jeffreys, that the demo for the game is now available on the Steam digital download service. I think that you should have a play of that demo, if you have not already played the game. In fact I insist.

Defense Grid: The Awakening

By Jim Rossignol on December 23rd, 2008.

Tower defence games are a peculiarly compelling niche within puzzle games. Perhaps it’s because you are still ultimately shooting stuff that I find them so entertaining, but I suspect it’s a little deeper than that: they are a tinkerer’s delight, a kind of fine-tuning of instruments and setups to discover what works best. It’s the classic pastime of toying with a machine, carefully learn how it works, and figuring out how it could be improved. While I’m playing these I’m a boffin in a shed at the end of the garden, searching for the best solutions to pointless problems. Defense Grid: The Awakening is one of the best tower defence games (yes, I’m spelling it with a c, I’m an Englishman) I’ve ever played.
