Diviner Divinity: Dragon Commander Preview

By Alec Meer on August 24th, 2011.

Yeah, they've heard of Dino Riders. It's an influence, apparently.

If I hadn’t spent an hour playing Saint’s Row: The Third, Larian Studios’ Dragon Commander would comfortably be the oddest game I saw at Gamescom. It’s not odd through and through, however – in fact it’s a focused, ambitious and visually gorgeous brew of roleplaying, strategy and aerial combat, with all manner of batshit silliness peppered about its surface.

It’s already found some notoriety due to the decision to feature a dragon fitted with a jetpack. Smiles Farhang Namdar, lead game designer, “that caused a lot of comments on your site!” It is, however, a decision I am 100% behind. It looks great, it justifies the roaring speed that dragon is capable of, and it makes Dragon Commander instantly distinctive, not rote fantasy. There’s so much more going on than improbable dragon mobility aids, however.

Hatching: Divinity II – Dragon Knight Saga

By Jim Rossignol on October 12th, 2010.

Wow, it’s been almost a year since I dragged myself through the first dozen or so hours of Divinity II. Just the first dozen hours of what was a huge game, because I simply couldn’t cope with the grind. In many ways this was a well-produced RPG, with a lavish, sprawling world and a bajillion quests, but not being able to walk down the road because I’d get sniped to death by enemies a couple of levels higher than me really took its toll. That hasn’t stopped plenty of other folks from enjoying the dragon-based adventures, however, and it’s now back (BACK!) with an enhanced edition: overhauled graphically, and furnished with a grand total of 180 quests. It really does look lovely, but – despite it brimming with fun ideas, like dragon battles, and flying death-ships – I don’t think I will be going back. Check out the trailer below and you’ll see what I mean, it really does look the part.

No release date that I can dig up for this, but it’s supposed to appear some time this year.

God Playing With Dice: Divinity 2 Demo

By Kieron Gillen on December 21st, 2009.

You'll get anything if you axe someone nicely. Ah! Ah! Ah!

The game that’s known in RPS’ palatial suite as Divinity 2: Divinitosity Divine! – otherwise known as Divinity 2: Ego Draconis – now has an English demo available. It’s almost 2 Gigs in size. It allows you to play as a Dragon Slayer – who due to grammatical playfulness, rather than actually killing Dragons, he actually has the ability to transform into a Dragon. Well, I dare say he kills Dragons too. Let’s just hope he doesn’t start with himself. The tragic ending of young Dragon’s lives by their own claws is a growing tragedy. Anyway, get the demo from here or watch some videos below….

Egon Spelunker: Divinity 2: Ego Draconis Webosite

By Kieron Gillen on March 27th, 2009.

Diviniest!

With somewhat odd timing, Luc Martens wrote to me to mention that Divinity II: Ego Draconis’ “real” site has gone live, and was probably worth a plug because we hadn’t mentioned the sequel to the cultish-hit Divine-Divinity since it was announced. The odd timing was that I was reading Drakensang‘s manual and had just hit an advert for Divinity 2 and was thinking i) Well, that’s some well chosen demographic selected advertising and ii) Whatever happened to it, eh? Well, it appears it launched a website. Well done them. And as a reminder of what it’s all about, the launch trailer’s beneath the cut.

Divinity 2: The Divinitiestiest of all!

By Kieron Gillen on August 8th, 2008.

Are you playing a role? Because I'm playing a role. Which role are you playing? I'm playing a nice role.

Fans of trad RPGs will be discussing inventories intensely at this news, I suspect. Larian, creators of the awesomely-terribly named Divine Divinity and the less-terribly named Beyond Divinity have confirmed their sequel will be out in “Q2 2009″ and revealed the first load of screenshots. They’re swinging back towards terrible names though – this one’s called “Divinity 2: Ego Draconis”. C&VG leak out a few other details about quest structure and the return of composer Kirill Pokrovsky before getting on with the serious business of a mass of screenshots. Our prediction: we’ll be making a load of jokes about kobolds.
