Report: Counter-Strike And Controversy At Dreamhack

Dreamhack Winter was held over 27th to 29th of November, and included the last major Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament of 2014. It was held in the recent context of professional players being outed as cheaters, a commensurate fug of spectator paranoia, and CS: GO’s ever-rising popularity – viewer figures for the final topped out at around 430,000 people, which rises to just over half a million with syndication, meaning the largest audience the series has ever had. The tournament delivered, in scarcely-believable fashion, another huge cheating scandal, a new era for CS: GO’s most popular team, and some of the best games in recent memory. Let’s roll.

“A completely real, no bullshit open world.” The presentation from this year’s Dreamhack shows the sophisticated AI in action, the scale of the open world, the way the missions are implemented, the freedom of the open world, the combat, the vehicles, fixing broken vehicles, the wildlife, the physics and fire-propagation.

One Nation Under a LAN: Dreamhack 2008

It’s become a welcome fixture in my life. Occasionally Warhammer’s Paul Barnett gives me a call and has a rant about whatever’s on his mind, like a kind of personal twittering service. Yesterday he rang as he limped away from Summer Dreamhack 2008, the long-running Swedish LAN event. Over 10,000 gamers in the perpetual daylight of the far north, dragging beds and PCs to the middle of nowhere… to game. It sounded awesome, and some more details and videos follow…
