The Darkest Dungeon Of No Pineapple Left Behind

By Alec Meer on May 1st, 2015.

I’m extremely intrigued bySubaltern’s magic school management game No Pineapple Left Behind [official site]. The more I look, the more it seems like its superficially wwwwwacky and zzzzzany concept of ‘what if you could turn kids into pineapples to make them easier students?’ is there to guide people into what might be both a biting and deep management game about the education system. There is fantasy, there are spells and there is the tyrannical oppression of a rebellious population, but it all relates to the minds and identities of children – are we looking at Dungeon Keeper with actual satire?

Wot I Think: Dungeons 2

By Alec Meer on April 23rd, 2015.

someone tell Cara

Dungeons 2 [official site] is a strategy-management game which borrows heavily from Dungeon Keeper – to whit, you’re an evil overlord building a vast underground lair then training up a bestial army within it. After a series of disappointments, might this be the much-needed heir to Bullfrog’s classic? It’s out tomorrow, and here’s what I think.

There’s a room type in Dungeons 2 called The Tinkerer’s Cave. I don’t know if this is a deliberate statement of intent, but a tinkerer’s cave is how I always saw Dungeon Keeper. It wasn’t a manic strategy game and it wasn’t about balancing the books, even though both those aspects were very much a part of it. It was a tinkerer’s cave, a big underground space to muck around in, to carve into shapes which pleased me and to fight minor fires in with a mixture of ingenuity and panic. That’s what I’ve missed in the long years since Dungeon Keeper 2. And that’s what, against many odds, Dungeons 2 has.

Dungeons 2 Keeps On Keepin’ On

By Alec Meer on February 20th, 2015.

Here is my hype-heavy quote: Dungeons 2 is probably some sort of strategy game

Dungeons! I thought the 2011 strategy game was going to be like my beloved Dungeon Keeper because it tried very hard to look like it was, but actually it wasn’t! Years later some people used that as a stick to beat us with! Cheery videogame funtimes! Anyway, Dungeons tried a whole bunch of different stuff within a similar thematic construct to Dungeon Keeper (i.e. evil lord building and killing stuff underground), but despite ambition didn’t manage to be hugely interesting with it. A sequel, Dungeons 2, has been in development for quite a while now, but finally lands in April. It sounds as though it’s added a couple of superficially slightly more DKish elements, such as direct minion control and more slapping, but I’m not saying it is or isn’t much like anything or indeed is good/bad/the mythical ‘it’s ok’ until I’ve played it myself.

Dungeons 2 Emerging Into Daylight Next Year

By Alice O'Connor on August 11th, 2014.

It's a unicorn.

Dungeons wasn’t trying to be a new Dungeon Keeper, but everything from the kooky ‘comedy evil’ tone to the very dungeon made it seem that way. It really wasn’t much like the Bullfrog classic, though. As our Jim explained, Dungeons was closer to a tower defence game with management bits. Now that we all definitely really understand that and won’t raise our hopes too high, might Dungeons 2 find a better reception? Or will it, at least, be better?

The sequel was announced last week, and is due next year. A useless cinematic trailer follows.
