First Look – EVE: Project Legion

By Rich Stanton on May 3rd, 2014.

Rich Stanton is in Iceland attending EVE Fanfest, CCP’s celebration of internet spaceships and those who love them. He was there when the company revealed Project Legion, and he tracked down CCP staff to get details of the new sandbox shooter set in the EVE universe.

Finally. Among CCP’s odd decisions over the years, surely one of the strangest was in making Dust-514 a Playstation 3 exclusive – and compounding this by releasing it at the end of the console’s lifecycle. One could speculate that this was all down to a giant cheque from Mr Sony, but at Eve Fanfest’s Dust-514 keynote the inevitable was announced. EVE’s Project Legion, a free-to-play PC shooter, aims to make Dust-514 look like a dry run.

CCP On How Valkyrie Will Fuse With EVE, Evolve

By Nathan Grayson on October 25th, 2013.

EVE Valkyrie has caught enough eyes to populate the world’s weirdest, most Halloween-friendly gumball machine, but let’s be honest here: we don’t actually know all that much about it. Yes, it’s glittering, glorious dogfighting with a thing that sounds amusingly similar to “Octopus” strapped to your face, but EVE is more than just a series of battles. Much, much more. It’s a universe of politics, corporations, and player-powered intrigue. The spaceships are nice, yes, but they’re only one piece of the highly fractured intergalactic puzzle – pawns in a game of blood and money. So where does Valkyrie fit into all of that? How will it integrate with EVE as is? Will we eventually be able to explore in first-person, or just exist in the universe as we please? And what about Dust 514? Where does it end up? I asked CCP’s David Reid, and he returned fire with the most potent space laser of all: answers.

Super Best Friends! PC & PS3 Dust 514 Trailer

By Craig Pearson on March 29th, 2013.

The PC/PS3 dynamic for all to see. Run, you joypad warriors. Fear our function keys!

If you’re not a regular Eve Online player, and if you don’t own Sony’s LittleBigUncharted emulator, you might not be aware that the PC players of Eve Online can now drop orbital strikes into the free-to-player PS3 shooter, Dust 514. CCP have decided it’s time to trailerise such an event, so for 2m51s there will be some footage of a console game on RPS. Don’t worry, though. I got your back.

Universe Collides: Eve And Dust 514 Merge Tomorrow

By Jim Rossignol on January 9th, 2013.

Yep, as CCP have detailed in this dev blog, after downtime tomorrow their console team shooter Dust 514 and their space MMO Eve will be a hybrid game, with players from both inhabiting the same world. CCP Nullabor explains: “…you will begin to see unfamiliar faces in local. They may look a little funny and talk about bizarre concepts such as tanks, grenades and “running around” but I promise they are as friendly as New Eden citizens can be and want to learn everything they can about this world you now both share.” Moreover, corporations are going to be able to employ Dust folk as mercenaries to fight over planets in factional warfare, and then reap the benefits. It’s a fascinating experiment, and I will fascinated to see whether it blossoms in the coming months. CCP still seem to be making a big gamble.

Lovely Dust trailer below.

Are CCP Hinting At PC Release Of Dust 514?

By Jim Rossignol on March 8th, 2012.

So here’s a thing – Massively have been talking to CCP at GDC, and this came out of their discussion:

And while the devs weren’t ready to make any official statements on the spot, a bit of wink-nudging indicates that a PC release may still be in the cards. As the devs note, mouse and keyboard controls are already supported in the PS3 version of the title. “I wonder why we did that,” Hilmar joked during the interview.

We have, of course, always been said that releasing the Eve tie-in purely on consoles is the way of madness, so perhaps CCP have always (sensibly) had that PC release in mind. We shall see.

CCP: Sony “More Open” To DUST Experiment

By Jim Rossignol on June 8th, 2011.

Producer Thomas Farrer explained the controversial decision to make EVE tie-in shooter DUST 514 a PS3 exclusive in an interview with RPS earlier today. He explained: “most of DUST is running on our own technology, it’s running on our own super-computer, on Tranquillity. And Sony is a lot more… open, shall we say, to allowing you to do those things. It may seem silly, but on Xbox Live your identity is your Xbox Live identity. In the EVE universe, having people not know who you are is quite important.”

When asked whether a 360 version was an impossibility, he reasoned that “I don’t think it’s about saying we “couldn’t” do it. I think some of the challenges we’d meet would be tricky. But then also as a developer you’ve got to weigh the balance. It’s nice to work on one platform rather than two, because it means you don’t have to make any awkward compromises, technically. Also you get the benefit of a closer relationship with that platform. “

On the prickly issue of there not being a PC client, Farrer explained: “we don’t want to cannibalise our own player-base.” Read the full thing here.

Interview: CCP On DUST 514 And EVE

By John Walker on June 8th, 2011.

A whole new world?

While we’ve known about DUST 514 – the console accompaniment to the PC’s grand space MMO EVE – for quite a while, yesterday’s announcement that it’s to be a PS3 exclusive has brought it to everyone’s attention once more. So I grabbed CCP’s senior producer on EVE, Torfi Frans, and DUST producer, Thomas Farrer, to try to find out their motives. What is DUST? How exactly does it relate to the EVE universe? And how will a game of EVE change once it launches?

CCP Confirms DUST 514 Is PS3 Only

By John Walker on June 7th, 2011.

BUT THIS ISN'T STRICTLY PC GAMING NEWS!

CCP’s much vaunted console accompaniment to EVE, DUST 514, has now been officially confirmed as a PS3 exclusive. Apparently it’s because the PS3 is much better designed for online worlds and micro-payments. I’m a touch confused about what DUST 514 is all about, especially how it interacts with PC players of a separate game. (Hence our discussing it.) Confusion I’m going to clear up when I speak to CCP tomorrow (later today in RCT, but it’s still yesterday in America). So yes, this is sort of console news, but if you read on you’ll quite how PC news it really is.

Planet-Busting: The Future of EVE

By Alec Meer on March 28th, 2011.

Like Galactus, but less pink

We have all manner of crazed reportage on the recent EVE fan-fest due from the boy Smith throughout this week, but while we wait for him to purge all those mysterious Icelandic alcohols from his system, let’s take a look at CCP’s video vision of their MMO’s not-too-distant future…

CCP’s Dust 514: PC/Console Overlap In Space

By Jim Rossignol on August 18th, 2009.

EDIT: No platforms are confirmed for this other than “console”, we’ll get more info as soon as possible.

So CCP have revealed just what the mysterious Dust 514 actually is: a console action MMO featuring “first-person shooter and RTS-style gameplay”, set in the Eve Online universe. Disappointing, eh? But there’s an intriguing twist: PC and console games will be able to interact, and the faction warfare map that gets decided in space on the PC, will also decide the map in the console game. There’s more, as Gamasutra reports:

Players in the PC MMO can “fund mercenaries and give them goals” in the console title. CCP’s Petursson hope that “these communities will meld over time”, expecting specific Dust 514 corporations to start with, but eventually social structures that bridge across the two. He quipped of the new game and the relationship between the two titles: “While the fleet does the flying, the infantry does the dying.”

So PC gamers get to be the space-bound commanders of the console foot-soldiers… That isn’t going to help our elitism complex, is it?

CCP Trademark and Dodgy Logo: Dust 514

By Jim Rossignol on August 5th, 2009.

Eve Online developers CCP have filed two new trademarks pertaining to online gaming: Dust, and Dust 514. And it could be something Eve-related, but that’s totally a word I would use were I trademarking a post-apocalyptic game world. Actually I’d probably call it “Dust Tribes”, for the vehicular combat vibe, but that’s just me (Omg, to the trademark factory!) There’s loads of speculation flying around about this at the moment – particularly since CCP showed an FPS prototype a while back – but we don’t know anything more. We’re expecting something to be revealed at the Cologne games Con, where the CCP bossman is going to give a keynote.

Needless to say, if CCP do end up making a post-apocalyptic PvP-focused MMO, my life will be ruined.
