E3 Day Zero: The Gallery To End All Galleries

By Nathan Grayson on June 11th, 2013.

E3 2013 is in full swing, and – against all odds – it’s actually featured a few rather interesting developments. But there’s also been a lot of blah. And some bleh. And a whole, whole lot of yadda yadda yadda. I’m at the show, and I’ll have heaps more for you soon. For now, though, let’s start with the cream of the crop, the nextest of the future-gens. These games will surely carry the medium forward into a brave new place, what with all their bold new ideas and important strides toward new thematic ground. Do you want ‘SKLOOSIVE SHOTS of gaming’s bright tomorrow? Of course you do. #E3 #E32013 #swag #bilboswaggins

This Is Not A: Mirage

By Jim Rossignol on June 10th, 2013.

Origo send of their – and yes this is an announcement for PC, honestly it is – side-scrolling beat ‘em up. It’s called Mirage. They claim that is is “Told as a “Wuxia” story, which literally means “martial hero”,” and that “Mirage captures the essence of a broad genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists.” The visual style (see it in the E3 video below) certainly looks fetching, but we all know the proof will be in the playing, which takes on a tag-team dynamic of swapping between the two protagonists as you progress. The developers S-Games previously made the Rainblood RPGs, which I have to admit I had not heard of until about twenty seconds ago.

X Rebirth Is Still Floating In Space

By Jim Rossignol on June 10th, 2013.

You might recollect that X Rebirth was originally targeted for release a couple of years ago, but it’s only now entering those final stages. Word (via Blue) is that it will appear at E3 under the banner of new publisher Tri Synergy. The announcement of this appearance is accompanied by a hand-wavey explanation of delay from the dev’s bossman Bernd Lehahn, who says “It’s beautiful, it’s big and everything in it is new. But it turns out you don’t simply reinvent space games overnight.”

Anyway, Egosoft are still pushing out the ongoing dev materials, as we saw in this post from Craig in May. And they’re still at it. Astonishing orbital-structure concept video below.

We’re Basically In The Dark About This

By Jim Rossignol on June 10th, 2013.

I have to admit that I am intrigued by Dark. A sci-fi vampire stealth game doesn’t turn up every day, so even if Dark doesn’t look like it’s going to be able to compete with the highest AAA production values, it’s going to be fascinating to see how it plays. That we’ve yet to see any kind of hands-on with the game might not bode well, of course. The E3 trailer, which can be seen below, is… an interesting choice. I presume the music was chosen to shriek out over the hubbub of the E3 show floor, rather than to actually work with stealth-game footage. Because. Yeah. I’ve posted the most recent gameplay trailer too, so you have a better idea of what’s afoot.

Anyway, the game is playable at E3.
