The Fall Of Earthrise

By Craig Pearson on February 10th, 2012.

Join us in remembering the good times.
You’re probably in trouble if Richard Cobbett hasn’t heard of you. When I mentioned to him that Earthrise, a sci-fi based MMO, had closed its servers, he responded with a dismissive shrug, trying to casually hide his missing knowledge in a stance of indifference. But I spotted a bead of sweat forming on his forehead, and knew that Masthead‘s MMO’s failure to make an impact with him had truly damned it.

The servers were shut off yesterday after a year online.

Freed: Earthrise To Remove Monthly Fee

By Jim Rossignol on November 15th, 2011.

Earthrise is a peculiar sort of game. In lots of ways it’s an interesting experiment in MMO freedom, with Eve style skills, projectile weapons, and a big PvP-open world. The problems with it, however, are that despite being beautiful, it’s grindy, jittery, and has a low playerbase. Devs Masthead have acted to try and remedy that last bit by removing the monthly fee as of December 1st: “We decided to let all our players unlimited gaming experience until we all are satisfied with the experience in our game. At the moment Earthrise features one of the best visuals, content, and gameplay of all sci-fi MMOs on the market. However it is missing polish and has annoyances that spoil the fun in the game. We are learning from our experience and that is why we will remove monthly charges until we bring the game to a quality state that is satisfactory to us and our players”, said Atanas Atanasov, CEO of Masthead Studios. Earthrise is definitely an oddity, and if you like oddities you will soon be able investigate it for no pennies. I’d say it’s worth a look, because this is one game that just needs to realise its potential.

Earthrise Brings A Slightly Better Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on January 15th, 2011.

Earthrise hooked my attention with its talk of an open, sandbox MMO world of sci-fi shootiness, and then we saw the first beta trailer and, well, it wasn’t the best thing ever. There’s a new trailer now (below), and it’s somewhat better. It’s a little story of some friends adventuring and then getting PvP’d up. It’s also clearly staged/filmed on the live server, too, because you can see a little bit of rubber-banding as the avatars lag in the landscape. Still fairly honest about things, then, and certainly a better trailer.

Um. Hmm: See Earthrise In Motion

By Jim Rossignol on December 1st, 2010.

Offbeat sci-fi MMO Earthrise sounds pretty intriguing, at least going on the information the devs have put out so far, and the interview we did with them over here. That said, the assets that have been coming out of the ongoing beta are… disappointing. The latest beta footage, which I’ve posted below, doesn’t seem to break that them. And I know this is beta footage and everything, but that landscape seriously needs some vegetation and, well, the video itself needs some serious editing pizazz… Sci-fi dudes standing around, lifelessly shooting each other at a range of ten feet isn’t selling this to me. Hell, it might be honest, but no. Go see for yourself.

Interview: Masthead Talk Earthrise

By Jim Rossignol on June 25th, 2010.

Since its announcement in 2008 things have been quiet at Earthrise towers. Bulgarian devs Masthead have been quietly working away on an apocalyptic sci-fi MMO, which has long been sounding like one of the more interesting prospects from Eastern Europe. A free-form, sandbox approach, a player-driven economy, politics, PvP and PvE conflict over resources, and a claim to be doing things in an “old school” way that belies a love of UO. Well, it’s certainly interesting, if a little mysterious. But now it seems things are hotting up as Masthead are beginning to work on their closed beta, which you can sign up for on the site. We spoke to Atanas Atanasov at Masthead Studios to find out a bit more about the game, and see how things are coming along.

The Spiderbot Hop: Earthrise Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on April 9th, 2009.

This is an odd one: a trailer which combines what is clearly in-game footage minus the UI (complete with some bunny hopping) and footage that is obviously pre-scripted stuff. Anyway, it gives us a good glimpse of some of the environments and characters in motion – which are intriguing enough, if bland in places – and introduces laser action for the first time. All of this makes Masthead’s sci-fi MMO all the more interesting. Earthrise is something of an odd fish, with both real-time XP grinding and offline advancement, as in Eve Online. It’s got a huge PvE world, the size of Azeroth, but also territorial PvP between guilds. It’s not exactly looking super big-budget, but there’s nevertheless a good chance this might actually last longer than Tabula Rasa – assuming Masthead don’t aim too high… Anyway, the beta sign up is on the site, so it might be worth putting your name down.

Post-Post Apocalyptic: Earthrise

By Alec Meer on January 24th, 2008.

Edit – comments closed on this because it’s attracting an insane amount of spam, for some reason. If anyone desperately wants to add a comment to this story, just lemme know and I’ll open ‘er up again.

All eyes are on Conan and Warhammer, MMO-wise, at the moment. While both are undeniably exciting, they’re still clinging onto the same fantasy lifeboat as their established competition. Rippling muscles, mystic blades and snickering goblins – pah, I say. Pah. With Tabula Rasa proving that you can make a classic-model MMO that’s built around shooting instead of stabbing, there’s clearly room for a few more science-fictional efforts.

The announcement of Earthrise earlier this week is surely good news for laserbrains, then.
