Premature Evaluation: Eden Star

By Marsh Davies on February 23rd, 2015.

A drop of fairy liquid and some hot water should sort these fellows out.

Each week, Marsh Davies crashlands into the hostile alien landscape that is Early Access and comes back with any stories he can find and/or an acute appreciation of how precious are the few fleeting moments of life allotted to us on this Earth and whether it really constitutes a full life, a good life, to spend the ever-diminishing number of hours and minutes clicking on virtual trees to turn them into virtual logs. Nevertheless, this week, he survives yet another survival game – this one called Eden Star, in which resource scrabbling is appended with tower-defence-style fortification on a distant planet.

Eden Starter: Mirror’s-Edge-Inspired Eden Star On Kickstarter

By Nathan Grayson on October 19th, 2013.

When you wish upon a star, anything your heart desires will come to you. So say the musical sages at Disney. They are wrong. So to make up for our glaring inability to will whatever dumb thing we want into existence, humanity invented Kickstarter. Eden Star, meanwhile, is something I’ve very much wished for – on many stars, no less – for quite some time. Its fusion of dizzying Mirror’s-Edge-style runleaping and high-impact, physics-powered buildsmashing looks as slick as an oil spill atop an ice lake on a planet made of wet noodles. I would like for it to exist, and maybe, hopefully, Kickstarter will make that happen.

Greenlit: Next Car, Eden Star, SUPERHOT, More

By Nathan Grayson on September 19th, 2013.

Sticks and stones (and bullets) may break my bones, but words will appear on the screen when I die.

Valve may not have pushed another 100 titles through Steam Greenlight’s mighty monetary birthing canal, but the latest batch of 25 is nothing to scoff at. Do you want Dear-Esther-influenced Mars exploration? You’ve got it. Car games (that are currently titled, er, Car Game)? There’s plenty of that too. And survival-horror? Well of course there’s survival-horror. There always is. This is Greenlight we’re talking about. But yes, between Lacuna Passage, U55 – End of the Line, Eden Star, SUPERHOT, and plenty more, there’s quite a lot to be pleased about.

If Minecraft Went Triple-A (And Mirror’s Edge-y): Eden Star

By Nathan Grayson on September 13th, 2013.

Watch as I fire the opening to Futurama out of my hand.

Oh. Oh my. Hello there, Eden Star. Like most profoundly ambitious indies, you sort of just crashed through the fully destructible walls of our lives without any warning, but I have a feeling we’re going to become fast friends. Where once we un-groomed savages hefted blocks with glass-frail hands of pixelated flesh and bone, you now offer us a crazy laser glove that bends matter to our will. With physics! And that’s good, because we’ll need our hands and feet lithe and un-calloused for Mirror’s-Edge-esque parkour leaping to aid in our survival against all sorts of extraterrestrial nastiness. Maybe I’m just starstruck, but this looks entirely brilliant. Trailer below.
