The Flare Path: Alphabetised

Alphabetia is a miserable disease. Like Malaria its symptoms come and go without warning. I realised I was having an attack early this morning in the shower. Usually, when it comes to lathering – apologies for the following mental image imposition – I’m a conventional head-to-toes sort of guy. Today’s ankles-buttocks-chest sequence was a sure sign something was amiss. Read the rest of this entry »

Serious Simming: Falcon Flight Sims Land On GOG

“That’s the problem with games nowadays: manuals are no good,” you’ll hear in the pub. “I miss the days of manuals so large they could crush a man’s skull,” they lift their faces from their pints to say. “I killed a man, once, you know. Whipped out my manual, whopped it on his head, and he was gone.” Their drinking partner nods. “I miss those days.” You try to slink away unseen – the fogies are going on about Falcon 4.0 again.

If you fancy some vintage hardcore flight sim action, and can live without physical murderweapons, head on over to GOG, where they’ve dug up the four Falcon games.

What Are The Best Game Manuals?

The omnipresence of the Internet, together with the ease of modern control schemes, has all but eradicated the need for game manuals. Who needs a glossy paper booklet when they have Reddit and GameFAQs and YouTube? Who has time to read with such a gluttony of entertainment options available at their fingertips?

You are? Splendid. You’re in the right place.

The Flare Path: God Quicksave The Queen

Due to some last-minute legal threats from the wet blankets at Wiltshire County Council, the Flare Path Diamond Jubilee street party (this Sunday, 13.00-22.00!) won’t be featuring bunting made from real buntings, an under-12s scythe leaping competition, or a low-level fly past by old Miss Musters in her half-scale Airspeed Elizabethan. The local government killjoys are also insisting we use pasteurised pigs’ blood in our Charles I execution re-enactment, and have all the badgers in our badger-hauled Boadicea races checked for TB. It seems bureaucracy trumps tradition in today’s health-and-safety obsessed Britain. Read the rest of this entry »

Fly Papers: An Ode To Sim Manuals

Thanks to an image leaked last week we now know three new things about upcoming Spitfire-serenade Storm of War: Battle of Britain. 1) It’s no longer called Storm of War: Battle of Britain. 2) Ubisoft are publishing. 3) The luscious-looking Collector’s Edition with its cloth maps and plump manuals may be about to give today’s teenagers a taste of what it was like to be a simmer in the Nineties.
