Seize A Saladin: Stronghold Crusader 2

By Adam Smith on March 31st, 2014.

Stronghold Crusader 2 skips away from the muddy fields of Wales (I assume most castles are in Wales because I saw one there as a child), returning to the dust and deserts of the Holy Land (not to imply that Wales is the Unholy Land). I think of the first Crusader spin-off as being a more traditional RTS within the Stronghold mould and what I’ve seen of the sequel backs that up. The main difference between this and the first may well be the actual castle construction, which looks like it’ll allow some creative thinking. Slightly dodgy voiceovers aside, the latest trailer has some appeal and the new details on the skirmish mode suggest it’ll be easy to escape the constraints of the campaign.

Spacecraftcraft: Notch Starting An Elitey Firefly-ey Game

By Craig Pearson on March 23rd, 2012.

With apologies to Notch, NASA, and Photoshop.
I think I’ve found serenity: Minecraft creator Notch is slowly thumbing through the Big Book Of Awesome Space Things while he comes up with his next game. He told the handsome devils over at PC Gamer that he’s pondering a sandbox style Elite game, “except done right”. To clarify, he’s not saying Elite is rubbish and broken, but that no-one’s ever done it as well since. Something I’d agree with, although these guys are working on that. While he’s pondering if this is a game he wants to be the Next Thing after the monolithic Minecraft, he’s pointed out his other influence is the magnificent Firefly. How would this work?

Stronghold 3 Patch Adds “Free-Build Panel”

By Jim Rossignol on December 3rd, 2011.

Poor old Firefly are looking a bit beleaguered after the disappointing release of Stronghold 3, to the point where the top thread on their forums is titled “We are listening and we are working”. Anyway, some of that listening and working seems to have gone into yesterday’s patch, which has added a “free-build panel” to allow players to experiment with their fortifications a little more: “Although Stronghold 3 wasn’t designed with a skirmish mode in mind,” announced Simon Bradbury, lead designer, “we have listened to what the fans have been saying, so beefed up the Free Build mode to give players lots more flexibility and the ability to have increasingly powerful invasions attack their castle.” Quite why it wasn’t designed with what seems like the most obvious possible mode for a castle-building game is beyond me, but at least they’re having a crack at it now, eh readers?

Wee: Stronghold 1 Free With Stronghold 3

By Alec Meer on July 26th, 2011.

Like this, but in 2001

Buy three Strongholds, get one free? No, no, that’s not right at all. It’s ‘buy Stronghold 3, get Stronghold 1 free.’ Because that’s what happens should you pre-order Stronghold 3 on Steam: you’ll get to re-dabble in the beloved 2001 castle sim. But when does it happen, I hear you ask? (I didn’t hear you ask anything, actually. I’m not a psychic or a madman who hears voices. I did hear a seagull go ‘qwaaaark’ in the distance however, and I’m pretty sure he meant ‘but when does it happen?’ Then he insulted my mum.)

This is when it happens: it happens RIGHT NOW.

A Storm of Swords: Stronghold 3 Preview

By Alec Meer on June 28th, 2011.

I'd never build a castle that neat. NEVER.

I went to see Firefly’s long-awaited strategy sequel Stronghold 3 last week. It’s a game about constructing some castles and destroying others, and it looks rather jolly. But jolly in a ‘squalid medieval life and constant war’ kind of way. Here’s some details, impressions and even some trailers for you…

Gnarly Crenelations, Dude.

By Kieron Gillen on March 5th, 2008.

EXTREME!

In the tradition of publishers following on from stuff RPS does, following the Stronghold making of we published a few weeks back, Gamecock have announced they’ll be publishing an improved version of the Stronghold Crusader in May, going by the unbelievable name Stronghold Crusader: EXTREME. This will allow you to lob around over 10,000 (Count ‘em!) units, adds a tactical bar for firing “Super Moves” (Which I’m not entirely sure is historically accurate, at least if you discount tales of Richard the Lionheart’s Dragon Punch) and an Extreme Trail mode, linking hyperdifficult expert-only challenge missions.

While I suspect we’ll be mocking the “EXTREME” subtitle for a while yet, the screenshot I’ve lobbed beneath the cut, (along with a more sober making-of video) does kind of live up to it as much as any game about fortification construction could.
