Ear is Ten Mins of Epic Mickey 2: The Power Of Two

By Craig Pearson on April 5th, 2012.

Copyright, or something
Time traveling dimension hoppers from a universe of electrical storms and VHS recorders have unearthed footage Warren Spector’s next game, Epic Mickey 2: The Power Of Two and brought it into our… sorry? It’s Wii footage? Oh, that explains it. I’m usually not snobbish, and I’m sure Youtube’s compression doesn’t do the Wii any favours, but jagged edges and about four colours really don’t show the multiplatform platformer off in the best light. With that warning in mind, try and look past it and into the really lovely art design in the platform sections, and the lovely flat art in the third-person sections. I did make an ‘aww’ when Mickey and whatever the hell the other thing is teamed-up with Mickey as a helicopter. I’m a sap for cute co-op.

Head-To-Head With 30 Mins Of Showdown Effect Footage

By Craig Pearson on April 5th, 2012.

Yay, bangy things!
Not enough things are inspired by 1980s action movies. And I write that knowing a quite a lot of things actually inspired by that apex of stupidity, and I should probably shut up, but I only have one day as a regular updater left on RPS and I’m demob happy. So I’m demanding more things that explode, more quips about death, and rocket launchers for everyone. Luckily I have a game directly inspired by all those things in my sights: The Showdown Effect. Magicka developers Arrowhead Games have taken everything I like in the world and dragged the camera out and to the side, so it’s viewed from a side on perspective. This revolutionary positioning of the camera makes everything easier to see. Proof of this can be found in the half-hour demonstration that Paradox hosted and have now uploaded to the internet. It’s probably too long to just sit and stare at, so the inclusion of the developer commentary and the Q&A make are welcome.

Simulation Stimulation: A Peek Into Sim City’s Glassbox

By Craig Pearson on March 20th, 2012.

Get your microscope out
If the devil is in the details then EA’s city-running sim, cunningly called Sim City, is writhing on a bed, doing naughty things with a religious symbol and being doused in holy water. Ugh! It just turned its head 360 degrees! It is wickedly detailed, thanks to an engine that shows off exactly what the simulation is up to. A building like a power plant is not just a stack of boxes, but it contains the resources like coal and workers to create electricity. The effects and animations you’ll see on the unit are tied into how the unit simulates what’s going in and what’s coming out, so the pollution spouting from the chimney is represented accurately according to the game’s logic. Clicking in garages into a fire station will make it a more efficient station: a station with a few more garages in the model will actually run according to how you’ve built it. Everything you see is a one-to-one representation of what the simulation is doing. The video is below.

Stark Footage Of The Game Of Thrones RPG

By Craig Pearson on March 14th, 2012.

This is what happens when you spoil GoT
I’m starting to feel like an embedded reporter in Westeros. There are too many games of Games of Thrones. Cyanide’s take is an RRPG (sic) in the same vein as Dragon Age II. The combat system’s tweak to that format means that instead of pausing battles to pick the best strategic outcome, things instead just run very slowly. I believe it’s their criticism of how long it took George to write that last book. It’s also supposed to reflect the tension of the world’s fights, as well as letting you direct friendly combatants and selecting stances. I’ve played loads of games, and I’m not sure that’s possible. I had to put one book down after a chapter, then when I returned the next chapter made me do the same. It was too awful. Hold me.

Found Firefall Footage

By Craig Pearson on February 13th, 2012.

Who brings a giant, armoured tripod thing to a gun fight? Cheaters, that's who.
Here’s a sneaky way to get a hold of a lot of Firefall footage. Developers Red 5 Studios are hosting a competition for their fans, asking them to create a trailer from unreleased footage of the free-to-play shooter. So while you can totally get involved and whip out Windows Movie Maker templates, if all you’re interested in is watching 10 second clips of the game, all you need to do is download the files and have a peek.

Bleeping Bleep! It’s Mafia II Game Footage

By John Walker on July 21st, 2009.

I'll bleep your bleep in a bleep.

Catching up a bit here, but just before the weekend 2K released a new video for Mafia II. It’s not brand new, but rather the clip shown at E3 last… wow, it feels a long time ago, but only last month. In fact, it’s literally the E3 demo, with Denby Grace narrating it as it goes along. It’s like you’re there, man, like you’re in that stuffy little room with the uncomfortable park benches. It’s well worth a look, since it includes some really fantastic examples of the voice acting. Well, if you can hear it behind the bleeps.
