Talk Of The Terrace: Football Manager Interview

By Adam Smith on November 25th, 2013.

Football Manager is an enormously complex simulation. On a global level, the game tracks thousands of careers, ambitions and relationships, and on any given match day, weather, morale, skills and individual personal issues can contribute to moments of brilliance or abject failure. Talking to Sports Interactive’s director Miles Jacobson, I found that the simulation model is even more elaborate in some areas than I’d expected. Read on to find out about the game’s expanding narrative engine, how climate change is forcing the team to update the code that generates weather patterns, why the ugliest aspects of football have no place in FM and how a non-contract player’s family situation might prevent him from playing for your club.

Football Manager 2013 Pirated 10 Million Times, Says Devs

By Graham Smith on November 14th, 2013.

Logging IP addresses on pirate versions? Cleverley done.

We always approach piracy figures with a healthy skepticism, but this is interesting. Sports Interactive says that Football Manager 2013, the previous iteration of the game, was pirated 10.1 million times. The report they’ve just sent out goes on to break down those figures by country, and estimates the likely lost revenue as a result of illegal downloads.

The best part is that Sports Interactive and Sega are being totally reasonable about it. Speaking at the London Games Conference as reported by MCV, FM producer Miles Jacobsen said that it’s “ridiculous” to equate these numbers with lost sales.

Quick Pitch: Football Manager 2014 Trailers

By Craig Pearson on September 2nd, 2013.

Left a bit. A bit more. More! Too far!
I exist outside of popular culture*. I’ve only just started to watch The Shield, and I mostly listened to Use Your Illusion II this weekend. So I had to Google ‘Gareth Bale’ to find out why everyone was talking about him, which in turn reminded me that Football Manager 2014 is coming out, and that I should get with the times. The managerial machination sim would have prepared me for the news about a Welsh person’s move to a Spanish place for more money that exists in space and time, and it would also have told me about his abilities, stats, training schedule, and possibly his cup size, but it’s not out yet and I refuse to be left behind again by looking at 2013′s information. I’ll wait for 2014′s release, and keep up by watching these videos of the game in action.

Wot I Think: Football Manager 2013 Classic

By Adam Smith on November 13th, 2012.

Forget about the media, forget about team talks. This is a tale of men, balls and boots. Football Manager Classic, a mode within FM 2013, goes back to basics. But is it actually classic, or is it more like one of those movies that nobody likes but that inexplicably finds itself in a ‘Classics’ range when it’s released on DVD?

By Alec Meer on October 29th, 2012.

Someone I know knows his wife

This year as with every year, there is a brand new edition of Sports Interactive’s management goliath Foot-to-Ball Commander. The 2013 version is out next week, in fact. New features this year include over 17 new types of decomposing tobacco breath odorants to add to your manager’s Unhinged Bellow attack, the option to hurl the most racist members of your premiership team into the heart of the sun and the exclusive Gary Lineker’s Leaving Your Wife Of 20 To Shack Up With An Underwear Model Time Attack mode.

Also there’s a demo, out now on Steam.

A Chip To The Past: FM 2013 Classic Mode

By Adam Smith on October 8th, 2012.

Anyone without an interest in foot-to-ball management should watch the five videos below, simply so that they can bolster their disdain for the people who do enjoy such arcane pursuits. The videos contain details of Football Manager 2013′s new Classic Mode, an alternative method of staring at numbers and tiny men hoofing a ball that doesn’t require an entire lifetime to play. For the uninitiated, the promise of a simplified interface and less detail will appear laughable, perhaps even satirical, as the game is shown to be a series of screens that list names with numbers attached to them. In Classic, there are less numbers and maybe even less screens too.

(Full) Back To Basics: Football Manager 2013

By Adam Smith on September 7th, 2012.

Football Manager has become a sprawling and oft inelegant mass of statistics and screens, which is one of the reasons I love it so, but there are many people who don’t want to decide whether to wear a tracksuit or shirt and tie before every match*, or to spend time (allegedly) teaching their dog to embezzle funds*. Those people say things like, “I still keep Champ Manager 1846 installed on every PC I own because back then all you had to do was pick the handsomest team and you’d win every time”. The modern game has excessive detail and options, they say, and Sports Interactive have listened. FM 2013 will have a streamlined Classic Mode.
