Deathfire Launches Direct Funding After Failed Kickstarter

I was never too confident for Deathfire‘s chances. A classic-style RPG, aiming to breathe narrative life into a Wizardry style game, certainly sounded appealing. And coming from a well-loved RPG creator, Guido Henkel (Realms of Arkania), it was reasonable that it might get funded by Germany alone. But $390,000 was always an enormous figure for an archaic genre, and while it did pretty well, it could only bring together $200,000 in pledges. Of course, they’re not giving up. Instead the team is moving to a direct pledging model, and planning to release the game episodically. So far they’ve picked up $43k from just under a 1,000 people, but they’re going to need a lot more than that.

Interview: Guido Henkel On Deathfire: Ruins Of Nethermore

Hey, get your feet off our couch.

We’ve already seen some promising in-game footage of the grid-based first-person RPG with the most fantasy name of all time, Deathfire: Ruins Of Nethermore. Harking back to the likes of Dungeon Master and Wizardry, but with promises of something a lot more involved, it sounds like something we’d like to press play upon. But who is behind these claims? Who is Realms Of Arkania co-creator Guido Henkel? Well, he’s the co-creator of… oh, I ruined that. Setting out to find out if he’s more than just the box cover model for Planescape: Torment, I stepped forward, sidestepped left, stepped forward again, and used the potion of Interview on Henkel. Find out how Legends Of Grimrock made him realise the project was even possible, why they’re sticking to the tiles, and why being a producer on Planescape: Torment isn’t as glamorous as it sounds.

Planescape Producer’s Deathfire: Ruins Of Nethermore

Guido Henkel may not be one of the most immediately familiar names, but there’s a good chance you’ve played a game he’s worked on. As well as being co-creator of the German RPG series Realms Of Arkania, he also just happened to produce a game called Planescape: Torment, and had a hand in Fallout 2. Oh, and he’s the guy from the front cover of Planescape! And now he’s after some of that sweet, sweet Kickstarter cash to fund a new fantasy roleplayer in the Grimrock mould. And it couldn’t have a more RPG name: Deathfire: Ruins Of Nethermore.

A Wizardry Did It: Deathfire – Ruins Of Nethermore

It’s hard to believe that there hasn’t already been a game called Deathfire. In fact, it’s downright unacceptable. I’ve played enough games to know that death and fire are the key ingredients in 90% of interactive entertainment so the lack of an actual Deathfire game strongly suggests that we have endured decades of false advertising. At least Gunman Chronicles was honest. As for Deathfire, I can’t show you a video of a zombie flame or a lich in a furnace because the game is too early in development for fancy trailers. Instead, there are screenshots and very fine they are too. Following in the tile-encompassing footsteps of Legend of Grimrock, Deathfire is first-person role-playing so old-fashioned that it reeks of beeswax and boot polish.
