STALKER For Free (Not The Rubbish One)

By Alec Meer on May 18th, 2009.

Via the strange magics of download service Gametap, the original STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (not its deflating sequel Clear Sky) can now be played for precisely zero pennies. No region restriction (apparently), and it joins a freebie roster that also contains the stalwart likes of Deus Ex, Hitman: Blood Money, Psychonauts and – yes! – Hotdog King.

Holy Smoke: Infernal For Free

By Kieron Gillen on May 8th, 2009.

Nerf the pyro

Fancy a free game involving shootage? You probably do. Gametap have 2007 heaven-vs-hell shooter Infernal available to play for free-o-pounds. Described by the RPS lounge as “not great” yet “an acceptable enough manshoot”, you can literally play it now. Yes. Anyway, a video beneath the cut to get an idea of what it’s like via the medium of moving images.

Free Fallout Felicitations

By Alec Meer on September 25th, 2008.

so much brown, so little time

It’s a big week for venerable download service Gametap. Yesterday, they announced they’d be merging with euro-rival Metaboli (though most likely at the expense of hosting indie-ish fare, apparently), and today they’re offering up the original Fallout for no-pennies. Which is bad news for the nascent GoG, who intend on flogging the game for actual money, but at least their version doesn’t involve that icky Gametap downloader bloatware thingy. Yes, it’s a game a lot of people own already. Yes, Gametap’s DRMy stuff means you don’t get a perfect, untouched digital copy to keep forever and ever. But: free. One of history’s finest RPGs, free. Go! Give yourself an excuse to complain the old ways were best.

Ha ha, he said

Grimm Episodes Info And Trailers

By Jim Rossignol on June 14th, 2008.

Following on from the trailer released earlier this year, American McGee and online publishers GameTap have released some footage of the individual half-hour episodes that Grimm is made up of. There’s also a schedule for their release. I’m tentatively interested in this, especially with that Katamari Okami-of-evil thing it’s going on in the trailers… A series of super-short games – if they can offer interesting challenges – could also be a good thing for everyone in this time-hungry world. No word on those prices yet, however.

Check out the trailer and dates after the jump.

Deus Ex, Free

By Jim Rossignol on May 29th, 2008.

Gametap, that surging faucet of digital delivery, has announced that it’ll be featuring candidate for best game ever, Deus Ex, on its free games roster as of next week. The Big Ex joins Psychonauts and Thief: Deadly Shadows on its free game thinger. You will again be able to celebrate some of the greatest moments in gaming.

I have to say, actually, that it’s about time we had some more Deus Ex 3 news for Kieron to dissect at terrifying length. Come on, Eidos, leak some more info already.

Mr Robot for Mr No Money

By Kieron Gillen on April 2nd, 2008.

Honestly. It's another one which is tricky to get cute grabs for.

Now, as I’m looking at Kotaku paraphrasing and linking to our Ubisoft-on-Steam-but-not-for-non-US-peeps story, I notice a story which I’m now going to paraphrase and link to. That is, Mr Robot is now free and on Gametap’s ad-supported service. You may remember Mr Robot from when we’ve previously talked about it, but it’s a hyper-cut retro-mash-up of Knight Lore and a jRPG, with System Shock’s plot. And a splash of Silent Running. Also, I now notice, it’s executable is called “Black Hole”, and I slap my forehead at the obvious other influence. But cute. Mindbending, but cute.

You have to watch one short advert when you start the game, but other than that, it’s exactly the same game that I’d have been more than happy to pay for. And, even better, it’s the perfect Space Week game. Go play.

American McGee’s Grimm Footage

By John Walker on February 20th, 2008.

American McGee has managed to maintain a reputation, despite having only really made one hit game bearing his name, eight years ago, and then the disastrous Bad Day L.A. in 2006. However, his name still maintains some weight, and his new China-based development studio, Spicy Horse, is finally ready to reveal some footage of Grimm.

Here, Gametrailers, have this delicious, shiny red apple.

Oh, To Be An American

By Alec Meer on November 21st, 2007.

Which is something I seem to saying quite a lot lately. Seeing that Psychonauts has just appeared for free (until Dec 31) on Gametap, but only to US folks, makes my urge to emigrate keener than ever. Anyone in New York or San Francisco want to hire a scruffy, bitter games hack? Bah. Anyway, go play one of the best electric videogames of the last few years for absolutely nothing, you spoilt bunch of bastards.

If any of our European readers are yet to sample the unique wonders of ex-Lucasarts genuishead Tim Schafer’s most recent game, then you should turn your eyes Steamwards right now. Yes, it costs money. In this case though, money can buy you happiness. Possibly even a rarefied form of love, too. Oh, and if you do want to install Gametap in the futile hope that a magical, wonderful error will occur and let you play Psychonauts, you will at least find that you can play the first three Hitman games, Tomb Raider: Legend and Cannon Fodder for no-groats (but ad-supported no-groats).
